Chapter 4

Author: Coconut Scared of Cold
I looked at him and scoffed lightly without saying anything.

My silence only encouraged Ryan.

"What, playing nice now? Where'd all that attitude from before go?"

As he spoke, his eyes deliberately dropped to the badge hanging from my neck. Then he gave an exaggerated "Oh?

"What's this? What's with that badge? Ours aren't that color. Did you walk into the wrong building, Evan? Or..."

His eyes shifted, and his face lit up as though he'd suddenly figured it out. Then he burst out laughing.

"Don't tell me you're doing deliveries now. That blue lanyard looks just like one of those courier badges! Hahaha!"

My badge had flipped over, so they couldn't see the company name.

Then Kevin's voice came from behind him.

"Evan! You finally showed up!

"You've made your point by now, haven't you? Come on, go wrap up the project. The client will be here any minute."

He reached out to pull me along, but I knocked his hand away.

Kevin's expression darkened. He lowered his voice.

"I'm trying to help you here. Ms. Hayes is already in a bad mood today. Just finish the work and don't make things worse for yourself. Otherwise, when the client gets here, you'll only end up getting chewed out again."

I scoffed.

"Wasn't this project supposed to be entirely your work? Ms. Hayes said so herself at the annual party. She said you handled the whole thing on your own and did an outstanding job.

"You're the one who got the Outstanding Employee award and the bonus. So why do you need me to finish it now?"

Ryan let out another mocking "Oh?"

"Come on, Evan. That's not fair. Why are you still hung up on that now? Just get to work."

I stayed where I was.

As the standoff dragged on, Hannah's furious voice rang out from inside.

"Where's Evan Young? Is he here yet? Tell him to get in here right now!"

Hannah strode out of her office.

She stopped in front of me and looked me up and down.

"Well, well, Evan Young," she said condescendingly. "You've had your little tantrum, made a whole scene, and now you've finally decided to come back?"

I nodded calmly. "I'm here on business."

Hannah snorted.

"I've seen plenty of people like you. You do a little work, start thinking you're indispensable, convince yourself you've been treated unfairly, then throw a fit because you expect your boss to come begging you to stay.

"Let me tell you something. Life doesn't work that way. No one is irreplaceable. You really thought the company would collapse without you? What a joke."

She planted her hands on her hips, her voice growing louder.

"And here I thought you actually had some backbone. Yet here you are, crawling back just like I knew you would.

"It's the first official day back after the holidays, and you're already late. With an attitude like that, you need to be taught a lesson. I'm docking your entire salary for this month."

She stared at me, waiting for the familiar meek expression she was used to seeing.

I gave a cold laugh. "Are you sure you want to talk to me like that?"

Kevin immediately chimed in.

"Ms. Hayes, don't get too worked up. Evan's probably just in a bad mood. I asked him to get started earlier, and he snapped at me."

Hannah glared at me.

"Does being in a bad mood mean you can abandon your work? Does it mean you can ignore everyone's calls? This is a workplace, not your home. No one's going to put up with your tantrums here!"

She waved a hand dismissively.

"Get your act together now. The client is sending someone over today to go through the project with us. You're handling the meeting. They're the ones paying us, so watch your attitude and don't screw this up."

"Ms. Hayes, the client is already here."

She froze.

"They are? Where?"

"Right here."

I flipped my badge around.

The moment the three of them saw what was printed on it, they all froze in place.

She dragged me toward an alley off the side of the road.I knew that if she got me in there, I was done for."Help!"I'd barely gotten the word out when she clamped a hand over my mouth and locked an arm around my neck."Go on. Scream again. I dare you."There was a sick kind of satisfaction in her voice, like a cat that had finally cornered its prey.I fought as hard as I could, but my body was still weak from the electric shock. Hannah managed to drag me all the way into the alley. It was a dark, deserted dead end.Once she'd hauled me into a corner, she let go and pulled a small kitchen knife from behind her back."That bastard husband of mine has had someone on the side for ages. He's been looking for an excuse to get rid of me. The moment my company went under, he jumped at the chance to divorce me and throw me out with nothing. And Kevin, that piece of shit! I supported him for three years. I gave him money, gave him opportunities, and the second the company collapsed, he ran fas

I thought back to my first day at my old company seven years ago. The sun had been shining just as brightly then.Back then, I'd been grateful just to have a job. I'd told myself I would work hard and earn every dollar they paid me.My phone buzzed again. It was a message from Hannah."Evan Young, just you wait. I won't forget this. You think you've won? Just you fucking wait."I stared at the message, took a screenshot, and saved it.Then I opened my chat with Marcus and sent it to him.A minute later, he replied with a thumbs-up.Two minutes after that, another message came through."Legal has already started the process. We're collecting every cent of the liquidated damages.""Got it," I replied. Then I blocked Hannah's number.I thought about what Marcus had said the day before."Without you, they're nothing."I wouldn't have believed it before. Now I did.Not long afterward, I heard that Hannah's company had gone into bankruptcy and liquidation. Her husband also discovered that sh

"Ms. Hayes, I'm gonna get straight to the point."I pulled out my phone, opened a document, and placed it in front of her."This is the project schedule. As stated here, the agreed handover deadline is today. Under the contract, each day of delay past the deadline incurs liquidated damages equal to 0.5% of the total contract value."Her face drained of color."M-Mr. Young, this...""If I remember correctly, the contract is worth $1.2 million. At 0.5%, that's $6,000 a day."Hannah's hands began to shake."Mr. Young, this... this is all a misunderstanding! We're basically finished. We just... we just..."Beads of sweat rolled down her forehead.I put my phone away and looked at her."Mr. Young, could you give us a few more days? Just a few! The day after tomorrow. I promise we'll have everything ready by then!"Her words tumbled out faster and faster."I'll have everyone stay late and work straight through the night if we have to. I guarantee it'll be on your desk first thing the day aft

"This is all your fault!"Hannah's face had turned an angry shade of red."It's all because you didn't keep your mouth shut! If you hadn't kept going on about some fake badge, none of these would've happened!"She jabbed a finger in Kevin's face and tore into him."Who the hell do you think you are? How dare you talk to Mr. Young like that? Have you lost your damned mind?"Kevin clutched his cheek, sobbing so hard he could barely get the words out."Ms. Hayes, I... I didn't mean to... I really didn't know...""You didn't know? Then why the hell were you running your mouth?"Hannah was practically spitting with rage."And quit calling him Evan like you're his buddy! After everything Mr. Young taught you, this is how you repay him? You ungrateful little backstabber!"She was about to continue when Ryan finally snapped out of it.He rushed over to me and bent nearly double, his voice urgent."Mr. Young, I'm so sorry! I shouldn't have said any of that. I was completely out of line. Please,

Hannah pulled out her phone and jabbed at the screen as she continued ranting."Project Director? You? I've had you working for me for seven years. You think I don't know what you're capable of? "Newfield would have to be blind to hire you. Who the hell do you think you are? You're nobody!"Kevin immediately added fuel to the fire."Ms. Hayes, simmer down. Evan's not thinking straight. He's just trying to blow off some steam. Don't call. At least spare him the embarrassment." He turned to me. "Evan, hurry up and apologize to Ms. Hayes!"Then he started giving me pointed looks."What are you standing there for? Say something nice! If Ms. Hayes really makes that call, you're finished!"I watched them calmly."Go ahead. Maybe then you'll finally believe me."Hannah paused.I wasn't panicking. I wasn't scared. For the first time, she hesitated.Kevin burst out laughing."Evan, you've really got nerves of steel. You almost had Ms. Hayes fooled again."Hannah went back to scrolling through

"Pfft."A quiet laugh came from beside me.Kevin covered his mouth, laughing so hard his eyes were watering."Evan, you... you really went all out with this one."He looked up at me with an expression that said he'd figured everything out."For a second, I actually thought you'd joined the client company. You scared the hell out of me!" He patted his chest and let out a long breath before turning to Hannah."Look at that, Ms. Hayes! Evan's messing with you!"Hannah stared at him blankly, still trying to process what was happening.Kevin was already doubled over with laughter, pointing at my badge."Where'd you even get this fake badge, Evan? It looks so cheap! And isn't that photo from last year's company party? You didn't even update it! Project Director? Hahaha!"He laughed so hard he had to brace himself against a nearby cubicle, his whole body shaking."Evan, this is next level. First you pretend to quit, then you block everyone, and now you show up with a fake badge to complete t
