Chapter 3

Author: Budding Hero
There was even a hint of relief in Selina's voice as she spoke. "Jared wouldn't look like this."

Zachary relaxed as well. He stared at the mangled face inside the body bag, and a mocking smile tugged at his lips.

"I knew this was all a hoax. Jared cares more about his looks than anything else. There's no way he'd let himself end up like this."

"Zachary," Selina warned, stopping short.

He pretended not to notice her anger and continued, "He's always been good at using that face of his to gain sympathy. Otherwise, how could he have fooled you for so many years?"

Apparently, even death couldn't stop people from running their mouths.

Just then, the forensic pathologist, George Sterling, spoke up. "The deceased has an old, one-inch scar beneath his left collarbone."

Selina froze.

That scar had come from the car accident five years ago. When Selina rescued me, a piece of glass had pierced my shoulder, leaving the scar behind. Afterward, she used to kiss it every night, telling me, "Jared, you owe this life to me."

In the end, I'd truly given my life back to her.

George pulled back the white sheet, revealing the familiar scar beneath the cold examination lights.

Selina's expression hardened. "His medical records aren't a secret."

Zachary immediately chimed in. "He used to brag about how Selina saved his life. Who knows how many people have seen that scar?"

George continued, "The deceased also suffered tendon damage to his right little finger. He underwent two reconstructive surgeries, but the finger never fully straightened."

The little finger mentioned was slightly curled inward.

At last, Selina's expression changed.

When we first held hands, she'd accidentally hurt my little finger. Ever since then, she'd always been careful not to put any pressure on it whenever we held hands, gently folding it into her palm instead.

She'd promised to stay by my side through every road we traveled together from then on. But in the end, I'd walked the final stretch of that road alone, on a snowy mountain.

"All of this information can be found in his medical records," Selina said, her voice growing hoarse. "Finding someone with similar physical features wouldn't be difficult."

George frowned. "You think someone deliberately went looking for a body with similar physical features and buried it beneath the avalanche debris from three years ago?"

Selina didn't answer.

Zachary, however, let out a cold laugh.

"What wouldn't Jared do to get revenge on Selina? He even abandoned his own parents. His family fell apart over the past three years, and he never once showed his face. Even when his father died, he didn't come back for the funeral."

My soul went rigid.

Dad was dead?

I'd known he'd suffered a stroke while in custody, but I hadn't known he'd died.

Selina's head snapped up. "What did you say? When did this happen?"

Zachary didn't answer, but Janice spoke up impatiently. "He's a criminal. So what if he died? What's there to talk about?"

Selina whipped around to face her.

"When did it happen?" she demanded.

Startled by her sudden outburst, Janice took a step back before answering, "It happened after he had that stroke in custody. You said you never wanted to hear about the Solton family again, so we didn't tell you."

Selina's face went deathly pale. "Where is he buried?"

Janice looked away. "The Solton family couldn't even afford a burial plot. Who knows where his ashes ended up?"

It felt as though someone had reached into my chest and torn it open when I heard that.

At our wedding, Dad had taken Selina's hand and told her earnestly, "If Jay ever wrongs you, let me know. I'll teach him a lesson myself. But whatever happens, don't ever stop loving him."

He'd entrusted her with the care of his son, believing she'd love me and stand by me. Yet in the end, Selina hadn't just stopped loving me. She'd destroyed the very family that had welcomed her as one of their own.

Zachary stepped up beside Selina and tried to comfort her. "It wasn't your fault. If Jared hadn't run off with the money, you wouldn't have taken your anger out on his family. At the end of the day, he's the one who caused his own father's death."

"Shut up!"

Selina shoved him away, and Janice immediately stepped in front of Zachary to protect him.

"What did Zach say that was wrong?" she snapped. "If Jared hadn't abandoned you, would his family have ended up like this?"

George cut in sharply. "Please keep quiet."

He lifted the body's right hand, revealing a badly deformed wedding band on its ring finger. He removed the ring and placed it in a metal tray, and the engraving on the inside became visible—S&J.

That was our initials.

Selina had designed our wedding rings herself, and only two existed. She'd once told me that neither of us was allowed to take our ring off unless death parted us.

Later, she'd thrown hers into the sea, but I'd kept mine on my finger until the day I died.

Selina stared at the ring, her expression hardening. "The design can be copied. So can the engraving."

Zachary quickly backed her up. "Exactly. Jared could have arranged this in advance. He knows how sentimental you are, so of course he'd use things like these to soften your heart."

Patrick finally lost his patience. "Selina, what exactly would it take to convince you?"

"Proof that can't be fabricated." Selina suddenly lifted her head, her gaze unwavering. "As long as there's even one other possibility, I won't accept that this is Jared."

I finally understood.

She wasn't waiting for proof. She was waiting for a miracle that would prove I was still alive.

But everything was here, laid out before her. Everything except a miracle.

George opened the autopsy report and continued, "The deceased also has a scar on the right side of his abdomen. It isn't documented in his medical records. The wound was stitched up without proper medical care, with seven stitches in total. Between the third and fourth stitches, there's an irregular crossed knot."

The cold, indifferent expression on Selina's face suddenly froze.

"Selina."I moved to stand in front of her.For the first time in three years, I didn't wish for her death. If she were to die here, everyone would say that she had died so that she could be with me, her love.As if that could erase all that she had done. Death was the easy way out. Living in suffering was the true price she had to pay.Suddenly, light flared to life in the distance. Patrick had rushed over with a team to rescue her.By the time Selina was found, she was already suffering from severe hypothermia. After being unconscious in the hospital for two days, the first words out of her mouth upon waking were, "Why did you save me?"Patrick gazed at her. "Because the rescue team Jared had fought so hard to find back then exists for one reason—to save people. We're not here to watch you end your life."A lone tear slowly trickled from the corner of Sel

Selina liquidated all of her personal assets, and every loss the Solton family had suffered was repaid in full. Those who had lost their jobs or gone bankrupt due to Wendell Corporation's actions also received compensation. Our marital home was put up for sale, but before moving away, she stayed alone in it for three days.Hardly any of my possessions were there. After I had gone missing, she had smashed all of our photos together, threw away my clothes, and completely removed any trace of my existence from the house. However, in the deepest recesses of the closet, she found a box covered in a thick layer of dust.It was the wedding anniversary gift I had prepared before we left for what would turn out to be my final trip. Worried that she would find it before the anniversary, I had hidden it far back in the closet.Inside was a hand-knitted dark gray scarf. Due to my inexperience and lack of skill, the stitches were crooked and uneven.A letter had been tucked beneath it."Seli

When Janice was brought into the visitation room, she looked like she had aged 20 years. The instant she saw Selina, tears spilled down her cheeks."Lina, I know that I was wrong. Please save me! The lawyer said that, as long as you can prove that I didn't truly mean what was in those emails, then I won't need to go to jail."Selina remained silent.Clutching the phone tighter behind the glass pane, Janice cried out anxiously, "This is all Zachary's fault! He tricked me! He told me that he only wanted to chase Jared away! "I didn't know that he would forge those fake ledgers, much less that he would take that 50 million dollars for himself!"You're my daughter. Can you really bear to see your own mother die in prison?"Selina simply stared at her for a moment before suddenly asking, "What were you thinking when Jared was carrying you out of the valley?"As Janice blinked in surprise, Selina went on, "When he tied the emergency beacon to you, did it ever occur to you that he mig

In the interrogation room, Zachary had changed out of his wedding suit and into a detention uniform. His hair was a disheveled mess, and he looked nothing at all like the polished groom from before. When he spotted Selina, a glimmer of hope lit his eyes. "Lina! I knew you'd come."Selina sat down across from him, separated by a panel of glass. "You said that you were willing to come clean."The smile on Zachary's face grew stiff. "As long as you agree to hire me the best lawyer around, I can tell you everything."When Selina kept silent, Zachary chewed on his lip."I admit that I was the one who transferred the 50 million dollars. I was also the one who fabricated that divorce agreement, but I only did all that because I love you."Nevertheless, not a hint of emotion stirred in Selina's gaze."Continue."Three years ago, Zachary happened to learn that Janice had always disliked me. He deliberately approached her and began planting ideas into her head, like how I was a jinx wh

Selina's head snapped up, and she stared at Mom."What did you say?"As Mom stared at Selina's pale face, hatred finally surfaced in her eyes."The second month after Jared went missing, a hospital contacted me. They said that an unidentified male body was found in the snow mountain near where the avalanche happened, and some of the identifying features matched Jared's. "However, at the time, you had frozen all of the Solton family's accounts, so I didn't even have the money to make a trip there to confirm things."Mom turned and headed into the apartment. It was incredibly cramped, with furniture that had seen much better days.Right in the middle of the living room were two photos of me and Dad.A vase of wilted daisies had been placed before Dad's photo. As for my photo, it had been taken on our wedding day. I had my arm wrapped around Selina's waist and was smiling so widely that my eyes had turned to crescents.Selina remained by the entryway, not daring to even take a s

The lawyer's statement was just the beginning.Following the reopening of the old case, those who had been involved in the investigation back then were brought back in for questioning again. The witness who had been bribed to give a false statement quickly admitted that he hadn't actually seen Dad transfer the company funds. The so-called secret trade he had seen was none other than a lie Zachary had told him to memorise."He told me then that the Solton family was going to fall really soon, so as long as I was willing to be a witness, he would give me three million dollars and send me out of the country. At the time, I had a gambling debt to pay off, so…"He ducked his head, not daring to continue.Meanwhile, the investigators found seven appeal letters in the sealed case files.Every one of them was addressed to Selina, yet not a single one had ever reached her.In the first letter, Dad had listed, in detail, all the errors in the account books. In the second letter, he point
