Chapter 4

Penulis: Budding Hero
When Selina and I were 20, we went camping in the mountains. In the middle of the night, a flash flood swept through the area, and a tree branch sliced open my lower abdomen.

With the floodwaters blocking the way, rescue crews couldn't reach us in time, so Selina followed the doctor's instructions over the phone and stitched up my wound herself.

On the third stitch, she accidentally tied the thread into a knot that wouldn't come undone. By the time she finished the seventh stitch, she was so afraid the wound would come apart that she clumsily tied two knots.

There was no medical record of what had happened, no photographs, and no one else knew about it. Only Selina and I knew of the incident.

George turned to her. "Do you know how this scar was made?"

Selina didn't answer.

George pulled back the white sheet covering the corpse's waist, exposing the crooked scar beneath the bright lights. Seven puncture marks ran along the wound, each at a different depth, and sure enough, between the third and fourth stitches was the same ugly, crossed knot.

Selina stared at it, her eyes fixed on that exact spot.

"The seventh stitch…" Her voice was so hoarse that it was barely audible. "…there should be two knots."

George bent down to take a closer look. Just as she'd said, two overlapping suture knots remained at the end of the wound.

That detail hadn't even been included in the autopsy report.

A deathly silence fell over the room.

This was exactly what Selina had demanded just moments ago—proof that couldn't possibly be refuted.

The color drained from Selina's face. She staggered backward, crashing into the metal examination table. The tray rattled, and the wedding ring rolled across the surface before falling to the floor at her feet.

"Impossible."

Selina stared at the body inside the body bag, shaking her head in disbelief.

"He stole 50 million dollars and sent me divorce papers after that incident. How could he have died three years ago?"

Zachary forced himself to remain calm as he tried to reason with her.

"Even if that body really is Jared, it doesn't prove he never betrayed you. He could've transferred the money beforehand and arranged for someone else to mail the divorce papers. Just because he saved you doesn't mean he never did anything wrong."

Janice quickly backed him up. "Zach is right. The fact that he died in the mountains only proves he didn't escape on his own. The 50 million dollars and the divorce papers are a separate matter."

Selina slowly raised her head, her expression clouded with confusion.

"He died on December 17, but the divorce papers arrived a month later. Why would he do that?"

Zachary's eyes were bloodshot as he struggled to come up with an explanation.

"Maybe he knew he wasn't coming back, so he deliberately set everything up to make you hate him. That way, when the truth came out, you'd feel guilty and start doubting me. Maybe this was his final act of revenge against you."

Selina didn't respond. She simply stared at the scar, unable to tear her eyes away from it.

For the first time, memories of the past three years came flooding back, overwhelming her before she could stop them.

Dad had knelt outside her company, begging her to reopen the investigation. Mom, frail and sick, had repeatedly assured her that I would never abandon her for money.

But Selina hadn't believed either of them.

She had driven Dad to his death, forced Mom away, and destroyed my family, all because she'd believed that if she took everything away from me, I'd have no choice but to come crawling back to her.

But by then, I'd already been buried beneath the snow in the mountains.

Selina bent down to retrieve the wedding ring, but her hands were shaking so badly that it slipped through her fingers twice before she finally managed to close her fist around it on the third try.

Its bent edges dug into her palm. Blood trickled between her fingers.

"Why didn't he tell me?" Selina stared at my corpse, her voice breaking as she spoke. "Jared, why didn't you come back and tell me?"

I stood right in front of her, watching helplessly.

It wasn't that I hadn't wanted to come back. I simply couldn't anymore.

Without warning, Selina grabbed Patrick by the collar.

"Who was it? He died on December 17, yet someone impersonated him and sent me divorce papers a month later. He's already dead. There's no way he could've stolen the 50 million dollars."

Her eyes were bloodshot as she demanded, "For the past three years, who's been impersonating him?"

Zachary's face instantly turned deathly pale, while Janice instinctively clutched her purse tighter.

Just then, footsteps sounded outside the examination room, and two police officers pushed open the door.

The officer in front, William Scott, carried a sealed evidence bag containing a badly damaged cell phone.

"We found this near Jared's body. Our technicians have just managed to recover some of its data."

Selina immediately released Patrick and turned toward him. "What data?"

William glanced at Zachary before turning his attention to Janice.

"Jared recorded an 11-minute audio file shortly before his death. There's another person's voice on the recording besides his."

William took out the recovered phone and pressed play.

A moment later, the sound of wind howling through the snow filled the room. Then my voice came through the recording.

"Mom, you were already awake. You saw me with your own eyes. So why did you lie to Selina and tell her Zachary was the one who saved you?"

All the color drained from Janice's face.

"Selina."I moved to stand in front of her.For the first time in three years, I didn't wish for her death. Not because I still loved her, but because Dad had already died because of her, and Mom had already suffered too much. If she were to die here, everyone would say that she had died so that she could be with me, her love.As if that could erase all that she had done. Death was the easy way out. Living in suffering was the true price she had to pay.Suddenly, light flared to life in the distance. Patrick had rushed over with a team to rescue her.By the time Selina was found, she was already suffering from severe hypothermia. After being unconscious in the hospital for two days, the first words out of her mouth upon waking were, "Why did you save me?"Patrick gazed at her. "Because the rescue team Jared had fought so hard to find back then exists for one reason—to save people. We're not here to watch you end your life."A lone tear slowly trickled from the corner of Sel

Selina liquidated all of her personal assets, and every loss the Solton family had suffered was repaid in full. Those who had lost their jobs or gone bankrupt due to Wendell Corporation's actions also received compensation. Our marital home was put up for sale, but before moving away, she stayed alone in it for three days.Hardly any of my possessions were there. After I had gone missing, she had smashed all of our photos together, threw away my clothes, and completely removed any trace of my existence from the house. However, in the deepest recesses of the closet, she found a box covered in a thick layer of dust.It was the wedding anniversary gift I had prepared before we left for what would turn out to be my final trip. Worried that she would find it before the anniversary, I had hidden it far back in the closet.Inside was a hand-knitted dark gray scarf. Due to my inexperience and lack of skill, the stitches were crooked and uneven.A letter had been tucked beneath it."Seli

When Janice was brought into the visitation room, she looked like she had aged 20 years. The instant she saw Selina, tears spilled down her cheeks."Lina, I know that I was wrong. Please save me! The lawyer said that, as long as you can prove that I didn't truly mean what was in those emails, then I won't need to go to jail."Selina remained silent.Clutching the phone tighter behind the glass pane, Janice cried out anxiously, "This is all Zachary's fault! He tricked me! He told me that he only wanted to chase Jared away! "I didn't know that he would forge those fake ledgers, much less that he would take that 50 million dollars for himself!"You're my daughter. Can you really bear to see your own mother die in prison?"Selina simply stared at her for a moment before suddenly asking, "What were you thinking when Jared was carrying you out of the valley?"As Janice blinked in surprise, Selina went on, "When he tied the emergency beacon to you, did it ever occur to you that he mig

In the interrogation room, Zachary had changed out of his wedding suit and into a detention uniform. His hair was a disheveled mess, and he looked nothing at all like the polished groom from before. When he spotted Selina, a glimmer of hope lit his eyes. "Lina! I knew you'd come."Selina sat down across from him, separated by a panel of glass. "You said that you were willing to come clean."The smile on Zachary's face grew stiff. "As long as you agree to hire me the best lawyer around, I can tell you everything."When Selina kept silent, Zachary chewed on his lip."I admit that I was the one who transferred the 50 million dollars. I was also the one who fabricated that divorce agreement, but I only did all that because I love you."Nevertheless, not a hint of emotion stirred in Selina's gaze."Continue."Three years ago, Zachary happened to learn that Janice had always disliked me. He deliberately approached her and began planting ideas into her head, like how I was a jinx wh

Selina's head snapped up, and she stared at Mom."What did you say?"As Mom stared at Selina's pale face, hatred finally surfaced in her eyes."The second month after Jared went missing, a hospital contacted me. They said that an unidentified male body was found in the snow mountain near where the avalanche happened, and some of the identifying features matched Jared's. "However, at the time, you had frozen all of the Solton family's accounts, so I didn't even have the money to make a trip there to confirm things."Mom turned and headed into the apartment. It was incredibly cramped, with furniture that had seen much better days.Right in the middle of the living room were two photos of me and Dad.A vase of wilted daisies had been placed before Dad's photo. As for my photo, it had been taken on our wedding day. I had my arm wrapped around Selina's waist and was smiling so widely that my eyes had turned to crescents.Selina remained by the entryway, not daring to even take a s

The lawyer's statement was just the beginning.Following the reopening of the old case, those who had been involved in the investigation back then were brought back in for questioning again. The witness who had been bribed to give a false statement quickly admitted that he hadn't actually seen Dad transfer the company funds. The so-called secret trade he had seen was none other than a lie Zachary had told him to memorise."He told me then that the Solton family was going to fall really soon, so as long as I was willing to be a witness, he would give me three million dollars and send me out of the country. At the time, I had a gambling debt to pay off, so…"He ducked his head, not daring to continue.Meanwhile, the investigators found seven appeal letters in the sealed case files.Every one of them was addressed to Selina, yet not a single one had ever reached her.In the first letter, Dad had listed, in detail, all the errors in the account books. In the second letter, he point
