33|Unnerving and Refreshing

Through the glass panel in the kitchen, I watched Kai speak with Klaus over the phone. He had his back on me. His shoulders were relaxed, but from how he was heaving deep breaths now and then, something was going down.

I hope Klaus doesn’t order Kai to take me where he is. I’ve considered Kai’s words while I put the potato wedges in the oven. Giving him a chance had been the best plot twist of my story, yet I’m hesitant to do the same with Klaus and Markus Martinelli. They’re blood, and they kept me safe from Dominguez.

I finished my coffee and washed the cup in the sink, blowing a sharp breath.

‘Easier said than done.’ It took a life-and-death situation for me to let Kai in.

I was setting the table for breakfast when Kai walked in. The salty breeze accompanied him as he opened the back door.

My heart lodged in my throat, and I looked at him to assess what the call was about.

He smiled. “What’s with the face?”

I should have been relieved that he was joking, but he was a man w
