Chapter 3

Author: Maris Ash
I also wanted to put Dad's mind at ease.

But during those days of gastroenteritis, my energy hit rock bottom.

I barely had anything to check in about, so I only earned a few cents a day.

Dad didn't seem to notice either, or wonder whether a few dimes a day was really enough for a student to live on.

Suddenly, it all felt pointless.

I checked in less and less. I could survive on one bread roll a day.

When I got hungry, I drank water. A jug cost thirty cents and lasted a week.

I started finding odd jobs around campus, running errands for classmates in exchange for food and drinks. I actually put on a little weight.

For some reason, I felt a lot lighter.

But Dad grew anxious because I was reporting to him less and less.

He went from coaxing to warnings to cursing me out. "Jamie, if you don't listen to your own father, you'll be struck by lightning!"

I ignored him.

That afternoon, holding a little snack cake a classmate had given me, I reached into my desk drawer out of habit to touch my robot model.

It wasn't there!

I broke into a cold sweat on the spot.

It was the only keepsake Mom had left me.

Mom loved me so much.

Back then, money was tight. I saw a kid in town with an assembled robot model, and it looked so cool.

I told Mom I wanted one too.

Dad scolded me for being an ungrateful little spendthrift. Mom just smiled and calmed him down, then comforted me after his scolding made me cry.

No one expected it, but the very next week, Mom bought me the robot model. She secretly spent two whole weeks assembling it before giving it to me. "My baby deserves the best of everything in the world."

Only later did I hear from others that Mom had sold the ring from her dowry and added some money of her own, all to buy me that model. For three whole months afterward, she'd had to budget carefully just to buy a bottle of vinegar.

It was the last thing Mom had left that belonged only to me.

Whenever I felt down, I'd touch the model, and it was as if Mom were right there with me. It gave me so much comfort.

But now it was gone.

I panicked and couldn't stop trembling. My mind went blank, and I had no idea what to do.

Only when I spotted the security camera at the back of the classroom did I think to go to our class advisor and ask to check the footage.

The advisor called everyone in our class back to the classroom. It was Sunday, a rare day off, and they'd been dragged back in.

Everyone was a little annoyed.

Clenching my fists, I followed the advisor into the classroom, anxious and flustered.

The advisor spoke sternly. "Jamie's robot model is missing. If any of you picked it up by mistake, give it back right away."

Once they heard what it was about, the class got even more irritated, and murmurs broke out.

"Who knows who took his stupid robot."

"What year is it? Who steals a robot model?"

Someone else asked impatiently, "Jamie is so broke he can't even scrape together a few dollars a day. Where would he get the money for a robot model?

"You don't think he stole it, do you?"

The advisor was taken aback by that and looked at me in surprise.

"Did you really lose a robot model? What does it look like?"

An indescribable feeling rose inside me, and my face burned.

Fighting back the sting in my nose, I described it.

"It's a Justice Titan model kit. It's red. It's a keepsake my mom left me when she died. If any of you have seen it, please give it back to me. Please."

The classroom went quiet, but no one stepped forward.

After a while, the classmate who'd suggested I stole it muttered under his breath, "Who knows if that's even true. He's so poor, maybe he's actually desperate for cash right now. If all else fails, just call his dad and ask."

The advisor nodded and stepped out to call my dad.

A little later, the advisor came back, looking at me with a sour expression.

"Jamie, there's no shame in being poor. What's shameful is being dishonest. I just asked your dad, and he said you never had any robot model."

Laurel Anders was my mom's name.My nose stung, and I nearly burst into tears. All at once, so many things made sense.I didn't say a word. I just threw myself into my studies and entered every competition I could.I knew that, for now, I was still too weak.Even if I wanted to repay them, I had too little to give. All I could do was keep improving myself and find a good job someday. Only then could I give back to society, and to these wonderful, wonderful friends.Once my grandparents started sending me my allowance, I didn't have to worry about money for food anymore. That night, I bought a ton of snacks and drinks. For the first time, I could truly show them the gratitude in my heart without worrying about what it cost.It felt like we were getting to know each other on a deeper level. The room was full of laughter. We had a great time talking.Only right before lights-out did I finally ask, "That whole thing with checking in with Mom for money. Was that you guys helping

Later on, the guys in my dorm and then my entire class got dragged into it.Yet, no one blamed me.They all told me, "This isn't your fault. Those people just can't tell right from wrong."Some even comforted me in turn. "We all survived campus cyberbullying together, so now, we're family. When we make it big someday, nobody forgets anybody."As things kept escalating, I gave in to Dad. I asked him to take the post down. But he said, "This is the price you have to pay. You disrespect your father, you have no manners, and your character is rotten. Everyone around you needs to know it. That's the only way you'll learn to change."I felt completely powerless.I even started thinking about calling the police. I couldn't keep dragging my innocent classmates into this.Even if they didn't blame me, it didn't change the fact that they were suffering for no reason because of me.Then things took a turn.A computer science student had originally planned to hack my account to see what

I felt content. At a secondhand electronics stall, a slightly worn MP3 player caught my eye and tugged at my heart.I loved listening to music, especially folk.Dad strictly controlled how long I could use my apps. I wasn't allowed to use a music app for more than thirty seconds a day, or I'd get forced offline. Those few seconds of music each day were how I unwound. The MP3 player was pricey: six dollars. For me, that was a fortune.I went back and forth for a long time. Our dorm leader couldn't stand watching me agonize over it and offered to buy it for me.I quickly turned him down, but warmth welled up inside me.I bought the MP3 player as a birthday present to myself.I carried it with me every day.Ever since I got it, I felt like my luck had gotten a whole lot better. When I needed laundry detergent, a roommate would happen to have bought too much in a group order and sell me some cheap. When something was a bit pricey, our class would just happen to hold a raffle,

Tentatively, I messaged: [Good morning.]No reply came, only a transfer of one dollar.Testing it, I checked in again: [I'm heading to class now.]Another transfer came through, along with Dad's one-cent transfer.Seeing two dollars and two cents land in my account in no time at all, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.Just a few days earlier, I'd been worrying myself sick over scraping together thirty cents for a bowl of oatmeal. Now I could have a bowl of oatmeal with a plain biscuit on the side.My heart ached with a bittersweet feeling. For the first time, I sat down in the classroom instead of standing at the very back while everyone pointed and whispered.Strangely enough, back when I photographed every single sentence the professor said and sent it to Dad, I could never understand any of it.Today, I only jotted down the gist, and the material didn't seem so hard to follow after all. After class, I sent Dad the key points, feeling a little nervous. All this time, D

I stared at the advisor in disbelief.I didn't understand why Dad would lie. Back then, he and Mom had given each other the silent treatment for ages over that robot model. Why in the world would Dad say it didn't exist?"I knew he was a liar. He's so broke he's lost his mind. He'll lie about anything.""Even his own dad can't stand it."The class president asked, "Can we call it a day?"The advisor agreed and got up to leave. I shouted, "I have proof!"No one believed me. No one moved.I connected my phone to the classroom projector and opened my photo album.I put the photo up on the screen. It showed me as a little boy, holding on to Mom's coffin, clutching that model tightly in my hand.It was the only photo of Mom and me together.I wiped my eyes and looked at the advisor. "Please, check the security footage."Now the advisor looked at me with pity and sympathy, and the classmates who'd been about to leave started speaking up."That's so sad. He was so little when his
