Chapter 2

Author: Nameless
Cindy thought she could threaten the school with her own future and use that to get the impossible chance to be with Rodney.

She didn't know that the only thing she was giving up was her own spot.

And without doing a thing, I became the only winner.

I had just barely sat down at my desk when someone who reeked of cigarettes came over.

Rodney put both hands on my desk, leaned forward, and looked down at me.

He could barely hide the smugness in his tone as he said, "Shane, I heard Cindy tore up your guaranteed admission form."

I didn't even look up. I opened my workbook and started on a few problems to calm myself down.

When I ignored him, Rodney raised his voice. "What good is all that effort? You stay up late studying every night and come in second every time. What do you have to show for it?

"Sometimes hard work isn't enough. Some things just come down to luck."

As he spoke, he brushed some dirt off his clothes and gave a smug grin. "You're not like me. I'm lucky. With Cindy backing me, I can get into Belton University without even trying."

A few classmates nearby started watching, curious about what was going on.

Rodney clearly loved the attention. He leaned closer and lowered his voice, so only the two of us could hear. "Just wait. Once Cindy and I get married, I'll be the one running the Gardner family.

"At that time, whether you still have a place in this family will depend on my mood."

Finally, I stopped spinning my pen and looked up at him.

He thought his words had angered me, and the smug smile on his face grew wider.

Just then, the classroom's back door flew open with a bang. My idiot sister, Cindy, strolled in with her hands in her pockets.

She walked straight over and pulled Rodney, who was still leaning over my desk, behind her.

Only then did she look at me, wearing an apologetic expression that was clearly meant to make her seem gracious.

"Shane, don't be mad at me. I know I did you wrong."

She spoke just loud enough for the classmates around us, who were all listening in, to hear.

"But Rodney can't live without me, and I can't just leave him behind. Besides, with your grades, you could easily get into Belton University by taking the college entrance exam."

She made it sound so noble, as if she were making some huge sacrifice for me.

Behind her, Rodney immediately put on a defiant yet loving look as he gazed at her. "Cindy, I knew you cared about me most."

The two of them carried out their lovey-dovey act as if no one else was there.

Cindy patted him on the shoulder and said in an affectionate tone, "Silly, who else would I be nice to?"

After saying that, she looked at me again. She furrowed her brows slightly as she spoke in her usual elder-sister, lecturing tone.

"Shane, you need to be more understanding. Rodney isn't like us. He doesn't have the same advantages as we do, so he needs this chance.

"Just think of it as doing me a favor."

Watching the two idiots caught up in their own delusions and self-importance, I almost burst out laughing.

She wanted me to do her a favor? Was I supposed to help her ruin both her future and an innocent classmate's?

I said nothing. I simply picked up my pen again and worked through a complex function problem on my scratch paper.

The solution quickly became clear to me. It was far more interesting than their pathetic little act.

Mom hurried over and instinctively reached for my hand, but stopped halfway and gently rested her hand on my arm instead. As far as I could remember, it was the first time she had ever been so careful about getting close to me.No one spoke on the drive home.I watched the city lights pass by outside the window. It felt like the pain I had carried for years had finally been put to rest. For the first time, I felt completely relaxed."Shane." Mom's hoarse voice broke the silence. "I'm sorry."Without turning around, I hummed a quiet acknowledgment."We've treated you unfairly all these years," Dad said from the front seat, worn down from keeping up appearances for so long. "We always thought Cindy deserved more because she was your older sister and a female. We were wrong."I kept looking out the window as the city lights blurred past.I had waited so long to hear those words that when the apology finally came, I felt nothing. The damage was already done, and the wounds had

"So you didn't give your spot to me. We both had a chance to go to Belton University," I said."That's not true!" Cindy denied it without thinking, but her voice was weak."Am I lying?" I smiled. "Secondly, what did you actually do back then? You stormed into the office and tore up my completed admission form right in front of Ms. Zeller."You said you'd accept the spot, but only if your boyfriend, Rodney, could go with you."I looked around the room at the people who were now clearly following the story."Everyone here is a leader in their field. Do you really think a guaranteed-admission spot at Belton University can be traded away? Or that a high school student gets to decide who receives it?"No one said a word, but the looks on their faces said enough."So what happened in the end?" I stepped closer to Cindy and lowered my voice, but everyone around us could still hear me. "The school rejected your ridiculous demand. And because you gave up your spot and tried to interfer

Ian frowned, while Mom and Dad went pale instantly."Cindy, have you lost your mind?" Mom hurried over and tried to pull her away."I haven't!" Cindy pulled free and glared at me with bloodshot eyes. "I just want to ask my dear brother something. Now that you're a PhD holder and such a successful young man, are you feeling pretty pleased with yourself?"Her voice was loud and hoarse from drinking, making it especially jarring in the quiet ballroom."What gives you the right to feel so proud? Who gave you everything you have today?"She pointed at me, making a fool of herself as she proudly told everyone about her supposed sacrifice."It was me! I gave it to you! That guaranteed-admission spot at Belton University was supposed to be mine!"I gave it up for love and my brother. I gave Shane my chance!"She grew more worked up with every word, spitting as she spoke."Things aren't going well for me now. I asked Shane for one favor, and this is how he treats me?"He blocked me! Two days later, I was sorting data in the lab when my advisor, Professor Ian Lester, called. His tone sounded strange as he said, "Shane, come to my office."I opened the door and found Ian sitting behind his desk, his brow furrowed and his expression hard to read."Sit." He pointed to the chair across from him.I sat down, wondering what was going on.After a short silence, Ian finally spoke. "Someone came to see me today. She said she's your sister, Cindy Gardner."My heart sank."She…" Ian paused, choosing his words carefully. "She said she gave up her guaranteed-admission spot for a man she loved, which gave you the chance to go to college."She told me she had sacrificed a lot for you. Things aren't going well for her now, and she hoped I'd help her find a better job for your sake."Ian stopped and looked at me, trying to understand the situation. There was a hint of sympathy in his eyes."She was crying so hard that she almost got down on her knees."A surge of disgust

Mom spoke up, her tone icy. "Cindy, if you had made something of yourself, you wouldn't need Shane to help you out."What did we tell you back then? You made your choice. Now you have to live with it. After all these years, you still haven't learned a thing."Mom and Dad didn't hold back. Their words left Cindy utterly humiliated. She kept her head down, her hands clenched so tightly that her knuckles had gone white.Cindy had once been the undisputed top student in her grade, full of confidence. Now, she stood under our whole family's judgment, unable to say a word to defend herself.I simply kept eating, as if none of this had anything to do with me.What was supposed to be a family dinner had turned into a celebration of my achievements and a public humiliation for Cindy. The meal ended on a sour note.…I headed to the parking lot to get my car, but Cindy followed me and called out, "Shane."I turned around. Her eyes were bloodshot. Dad looked furious. The three of us turned and walked away.Behind us, Cindy and Rodney kept shouting and shoving each other, while the parents nearby whispered and pointed at them.Cindy had created this whole mess herself and forced me into it as a supporting role.In the end, it cost her her own future, and the whole thing came crashing down.…Seven years later, I stood at the podium at an international academic conference, presenting my research fluently to leading scholars from around the world. The spotlight shone warmly on me as I spoke.
