Chapter 1

Hearing my girlfriend, Jessie Barney, vent to her best friend over the phone felt like a huge stone had lodged in my chest, crushing my lungs. I couldn't breathe.

Counting the three years I'd spent with Jessie, I realized I had fallen for her at first sight.

Back in college, I had accidentally seen her apply for a scholarship and learned that her family was struggling. To protect her pride, I lied and said I had applied for one too.

After graduation, when she complained about the harsh job market and mounting pressure, I secretly arranged for her to join my company. I even funneled her salary through my private account to shield her from embarrassment.

For three years, I acted ordinary to the world, but I worked tirelessly to give her the very best. Even the engagement ring she now held had been meticulously chosen and designed by me.

And yet, all my efforts ended like this.

My chest ached with despair, and just then, the phone rang. I picked up to hear my father's voice.

"Josh, how did it go? Did she say yes? I couldn't witness your proposal in person, but I sent a gift for my future daughter-in-law."

I forced my voice to stay steady. "Dad… I'm afraid I've disappointed you. She turned me down."

Alexander was stunned on the other end, offered a few words of consolation, and then hurried off to a meeting.

What Jessie didn't know was that the richest man in Hallowyn City she was determined to marry was none other than my father.

Two months ago, when her work was frustrating her, I had suggested a road trip to cheer her up. On an empty highway, she whimsically insisted on taking the driver's seat, so we swapped places.

Not far down the road, while changing lanes, she rear-ended a limousine. When I caught sight of the license plate, I jokingly nudged her. "Guess we're paying a fortune for this one."

Panicked, she jumped out and rushed to the car, her face full of worry. I opened my mouth to reassure her, but the limousine's driver stepped out first.

The moment he saw us, his expression changed instantly. Yet he asked warmly if we were hurt and visibly relaxed when we assured him we were fine.

Jessie had anxiously asked about compensation. He just laughed and waved it off. Then he drove off, leaving her standing in stunned silence.

While waiting for the tow truck, I replied to a message from my father. Jessie hovered nearby, cautiously asking, "Josh… do you know that driver? He didn't make us pay. Honestly, we should have, since it was our fault.

"I looked him up online. Even if we were paying, it would've been over 10,000 dollars! I didn't expect him to be so nice!"

Seeing that the driver was my father, recently returned from abroad, had been purely coincidental. I had planned to reveal his identity after the proposal, so I lied. "No, I don't know him."

But that small lie planted a seed in her mind. In her eyes, rear-ending that car was fate—destined by the richest man himself—and in an instant, I was discarded.

Jessie had killed two people. The police arrived swiftly and took her away.I followed to the station to give my statement. By the time we finished, night had already fallen. An officer relayed a message: Jessie wanted to see me one last time.In the interrogation room, her makeup was smeared across her face. Her white dress was splattered with blood, and her once-pristine shoes were stained red with blood.A memory struck me—our first meeting. It was a spring afternoon in our sophomore year, right after the physical fitness test on the campus field. Jessie had stood under the shade, wearing a white dress, waiting patiently for her classmates. The wind had lifted her hair, and she had looked like a pure, white jasmine in bloom. But that Jessie was gone. The one before me now carried no trace of that unblemished beauty. Her eyes met mine, conflicted and searching. After a long pause, she spoke pleadingly, "Josh… I regret it. Can you forgive me?"I didn't answer. She had already

I played the hotel surveillance footage in front of Jessie. One tap was all it would take for her to see the truth laid bare. Her trembling fingers hovered over the screen, then jerked back as if burned. A second later, she shoved the phone far away from her. She already knew the answer—she just didn't want to witness it.But fate had other ideas. The phone slid right to George's feet. He picked it up and opened the video."If you won't watch it, then I will. Let's see exactly who it was."The footage clearly showed Bruce's face. He was the only person who had entered or left that room.Shameful sounds filled the office, echoing off the walls. Everyone stared, stunned.Jessie pressed her hands over her ears, tears spilling down her cheeks."Stop it! Turn it off! I said turn it off!"She lunged forward, snatched the phone out of George's hand, and smashed it against the floor. The disgraceful audio finally ceased.Silence settled—until a sharp slap split the air.George's hand

The murmurs of the crowd gradually quieted as I pushed them back and stepped forward."Everyone, this woman cannot possibly be carrying my father's child!"Alexander's eyes scanned the gathering as I stepped forward with a lawyer at my side."I have only one child, and that's Josh. Jessie cannot possibly have my child."He raised his voice, letting the crowd hear him loud and clear."All these years in business, countless people have tried introducing women to me. But I have only loved my wife. My wife gave me one son, and that's enough for me. Since her passing, I've undergone a vasectomy to prevent anyone from trying to claim a child as mine."He held up the official documentation for everyone to see."Jessie, do you understand now? You could not possibly have my child!"Alexander held the proof directly in front of her. Jessie shook her head in disbelief."No… I don't believe it. That day… you clearly…"I cleared the crowd and approached her."Jessie, if you really want t

It turned out the man was Jessie's father—George Barney.Back in college, Jessie had applied for a scholarship because her father refused to give her living expenses and she couldn't afford tuition. Now it was clear where his priorities lay: money, and only money."I have nothing to do with your daughter! Sir, if you keep spreading lies about me, my lawyer will deal with you!"George shot up, grabbing the hem of my father's coat to stop him from walking away."Hey! I don't get you rich folks. Flip-flop on people like this, and as soon as you put on your pants, you don't recognize anyone, huh?"Because we were near the company, a small crowd had begun to gather. Then, unexpectedly, Jessie appeared out of nowhere."Dad, what are you doing?"She tugged at her father, trying to pull him away, but George stood rooted, immovable as if welded to the ground.Embarrassed, she looked at my father."Sorry, Alexander. I'll get my dad to leave right now."George's hand shot up, slapping

Before long, Bruce appeared at the door, dressed in a sharp suit.He knocked, and Jessie, face alight with anticipation, opened the door. Her expression immediately faltered when she saw him."Bruce? Where's Alexander?"Bruce's eyes lingered on her, clearly admiring her appearance."Jessie, Mr. Vander said he'd be a little late. Worried you might get anxious, he asked me to bring you the coffee you like."He handed her the cup. Without hesitation, she took a sip."Exactly what I like. Alexander really knows my taste. Well, I'll wait for him here, then."She settled onto the bed, giving Bruce a subtle signal that he could leave. But Bruce didn't move. The moment Jessie tried to stand, she stumbled and collapsed onto the bed.Bruce stepped inside with a lecherous grin, locked the door, and began to assault her.I closed my laptop and reminded myself: this had nothing to do with me. Jessie had brought this on herself.A month later, my father's former driver, Reese, returned,

I pretended to exchange a few casual words with my dad before hanging up.As I handed the phone back to Bruce, I noticed him letting out a sigh of relief. So even he felt guilty—afraid of being caught. At the company, I instructed my assistant to compile a list of recent gifts from partners. Soon, he returned with the inventory. When I asked about the whereabouts of the jewelry and luxury items, the assistant hesitated, unable to answer.I checked the office surveillance footage and quickly spotted Bruce chatting with our partners. As I suspected, he had been accepting these gifts on my father's behalf and keeping them for himself.I saved the video to my phone, instructed the assistant to stay quiet, and left the office. On the way back, I stopped at a nearby café to buy water—and unexpectedly ran into Jessie. She was arm in arm with her best friend, Chloe, window-shopping. The luxury handbag in her hand—it was the exact one missing from the gift inventory. She froze when she
