Chapter 3

Penulis: Twice Blessed
I couldn't help but sneer at Clara's absurd excuse. Who in the world would hold a meeting at a breakfast stand?

It was a little after 8:00 am when Thomas posted on his social media. "Someone who buys you a ring might not love you, but someone who wakes up at 6:00 am to get you breakfast definitely does!"

It turned out that Thomas had gotten both the ring and the breakfast. I could only wish both of them well from that point onward.

I got up and started packing my things. It wasn't long before I packed everything into a single suitcase. I didn't have many belongings to begin with, and I had thrown away everything that needed to be discarded earlier.

There was no trace of me left in the house.

…

Clara actually returned home at 6:00 pm.

That was one of the few times she had followed through on what she said, but by then, I had only 12 hours left before I boarded my flight home.

She came in with a box in her hand, slightly out of breath. She handed me the box and said, "I'm sorry for being so busy lately, Hunter. I picked this out just for you. Happy ninth anniversary, Hunter!"

I looked at the Rolex watch in the box. I had told her before that I really liked this model, but when it came to love, I finally knew the difference between something money could easily buy and something that required someone to actually care enough to do it.

I calmly accepted the gift and said, "Thank you."

Clara breathed a sigh of relief. "I knew you'd like it."

She then wrapped her arms around me and kissed me lightly on the lips. "We'll go to Northern Eschaton once things settle down at work, Hunter. Haven't you always wanted to go there to see the Northern Lights?"

I hummed softly in assent, knowing very well that I couldn't bring myself to believe her anymore.

I had dreamed of seeing the Northern Lights since my school days, but once work got too busy, I had put that dream on hold for years. I had also mentioned plenty of little things I wanted to do, but she had never followed through on any of them.

Clara was ready to leave again after a brief moment of intimacy.

There were still ten hours left until my flight. I watched her back as she walked away, then suddenly called out to her, "Clara…"

Clara stopped in her tracks, turned around, and asked, "What's the matter, Hunter?"

I looked directly into her mesmerizing eyes and asked one last time, "Do you still love me, Clara?"

Clara laughed as if I had said something ridiculous, then came over and patted me on the head.

She then replied without any hesitation, "Of course I love you! You shouldn't let your imagination run wild, Hunter. We'll celebrate our anniversary together once I come back tomorrow. I've even made a reservation at the restaurant for the occasion, Hunter!"

I could only nod since she spoke with such certainty. "I'll be waiting for you, then."

It was the first time in nine years that I had lied to her. I withdrew my gaze after saying that and turned to return to my room.

Clara, who had originally been in a hurry to head out, remained standing at the door, not leaving. She suddenly called out to me, "Hunter…"

She seemed to sense that something was amiss and just stood there staring at me, unwilling to leave.

I stood at the turn of the second-floor staircase and said, "You'd better go, Clara—someone's waiting for you."

She just stood there looking at me for a good while after I said that, only finally opening the door to leave once I headed upstairs to my room.

I watched her walk away from the second floor, knowing very well that the nine years of misguided love were finally coming to an end.

I still had nine hours left before my flight. I was leaving early the following morning, so I didn't sleep a wink all night.

I had three hours left. I printed out the evidence of Thomas provoking me and the intimate photos of him and Clara, then laid them out on the living room table.

I had two hours left before my flight. I took off the necklace I had worn for nine years.

It was the very first gift Clara ever bought me—back when she was 18 years old and working five jobs back-to-back to afford it. She told me back then that as long as I wore it, we'd be together forever.

I had no reason to keep wearing it now since we were no longer going to be together.

I had one hour left. I placed a blank sheet of paper on top of the evidence and wrote, "We've spent nine years loving the wrong person. There's no need for us to see each other again, Clara. —Hunter Johnson."

Having done all that, I waited alone in the vast villa until 6:00 am.

It wasn't long before the ride I had pre-booked arrived. I took one final look at the place, turned on my heel, and walked away.

I deleted and cleared out every account that had anything to do with Clara while I was in the car. I then snapped my SIM card in half and threw it out the window. I knew that from that point onward, Clara and I had nothing to do with each other.

I arrived at the airport, checked in, and headed toward security with my ticket and passport in hand. I would be starting a new life once I went through that gate.

Just as I smiled faintly and started walking forward, I heard a familiar voice behind me. "Hunter!"

I posted a photo on Instagram once I arrived at Salvoland, and Thomas liked it. I had never blocked him on my social media or WhatsApp, even after the whole incident. He actually messaged me out of the blue. "Clara's been sentenced."I didn't realize things had gotten to the point where she could be sent to prison. I thought she had simply lost her company and gone bankrupt.Thomas explained, "She became convinced that everyone had wronged her and started taking it out on society once she went bankrupt. "She would try to break up any couple she saw being affectionate. She eventually picked a fight with a couple who were medical and law students. They suffered minor injuries, while she was seriously injured. She even got convicted of intentional assault."It turned out that was what happened.Thomas returned to his hometown and got himself a stable job. He remained single and didn't pursue another relationship. He said he wanted to build a life on his own, work hard, earn an hone

"Do you want me to turn it back on, then?" Tiana teased.I couldn't help but chuckle. "It's alright. I can already figure out the whole situation."I couldn't say I was entirely in the dark about what she was up to these past few days since Clara and I had mutual friends. Clara's reputation was in ruins, so naturally, things weren't going well for her.I wasn't much of a golfer, but Tiana was great at it. She came up behind me and taught me by guiding me through the motions herself. That was the first time we had been this physically close. We had been married for three days, yet we still hadn't slept together. It was mainly because I didn't want to rush through something so important. I wanted to treat her right, and sleeping together without genuine feelings involved felt completely pointless to me.I couldn't help but feel my heart skip a beat as Tiana's supple chest pressed against my back, taking me straight back to the spring when I turned 18 years old. I realized then t

It occurred to me that this might be the kind of love I had spent my whole life searching for. Then, the priest turned to me and asked me the same thing.I was just about to say "I do" when someone pushed the church doors open and yelled, "Hunter!"Clara was drenched in sweat, as if she had just been fished out of the water. "You can't marry her, Hunter!"She screamed as she ran toward me, only to be taken away by the Gunther family's bodyguards. She sounded so desperate, making it seem as though she was the innocent main character in a romance novel who had just been dumped, while Tiana and I were the mistress and scumbag.I paid no attention to the interruption. I placed my hand on the Scripture and looked at the priest and Tiana. "I do."In that instant, the guests broke into thunderous applause. I had officially married Tiana, becoming a part of the Gunther family as their son-in-law.In the middle of the guests' congratulations, another commotion broke out outside the churc

I froze for a moment, shook my head, and replied, "I'm not cold…"It was much warmer here than up north, so there was no way I could feel cold here. In those nine years I spent with Clara in the freezing north, I had been through every kind of hardship. I had even lived with her in a basement apartment with no heating, where the roof leaked in summer and the drafts came in during winter.I never dared to offer to pay for a bigger place because I didn't want to hurt Clara's pride. I foolishly chose to struggle alongside her instead. I had no idea that Clara would turn out to be the type who could share her hardships with me, but not the good fortune."What's on your mind?" Tiana asked gently.I suddenly realized that it wasn't appropriate for me to be thinking about my ex-girlfriend while I was sitting in my fiancee's car, but given where things stood, I still needed to fill her in. "I-I was actually—"I hadn't even finished speaking when Tiana suddenly cut me off. She took a tur

"I'm naturally getting married to my fiancee," I replied. I smiled faintly as I showed her my chat history with Dad. "I've already agreed to return to my hometown for the arranged marriage, so we're officially done, Clara."I didn't want to waste another second. Clara was still trying to stop me, so I quickly came up with an idea. I pointed behind her and yelled, "Thomas!" Clara turned around, just as I had expected.I immediately broke free from her and ran through the security checkpoint."You lied to me! You're such a big, fat liar, Hunter!"I couldn't make out Clara's expression from that distance. I could only hear her yelling and calling me a liar. I had deceived her, but she had been the bigger liar all along. She had spent nine years deceiving me. I had given my everything to her for the past nine years, yet it still wasn't enough to earn even a moment of her attention. If she had no intention of marrying me, then so be it. I would marry someone else instead.I boarded

I turned around in a daze, but the crowd behind me was moving so much that I couldn't make out where the voice had come from. I panicked as I grabbed my suitcase and ran.It was then that someone with a slender hand grabbed my backpack from behind and held on tight."Who is it?" I yelled, trying to wrench myself free and run. I caught Clara's face out of the corner of my eye and barked, "Let go of me!"Clara was still holding on to the necklace and note that I had left behind. "What's the meaning of this, Hunter?"I couldn't help but find it absurd when I saw the confusion on her face. "It's over between us, Clara!"I said it right in her face, but she wouldn't hear it. She yanked me off to the side and asked, "Didn't we agree to celebrate our anniversary later? You don't need to pull something like this just because you're throwing a fit, Hunter."She was still sidestepping the real issue. She had seen my note, so she must have seen the evidence I left on the table as well.I d
