Chapter 3

Author: Magpie
I crashed into a champagne tower, the glasses shattering with a deafening crash.

Shards sliced my leg, blood trickling down my ankle onto the marble floor, but Tessa didn't spare a glance.

"Today, I'm teaching you manners." She grabbed a stick from a table and swung it at my back, each blow whistling through the air. "This is for lying! For slandering Bianca!"

I bit my lip, refusing to utter a sound.

Guests shifted uneasily, some stepping forward to intervene but shrinking back under Tessa's ferocious glare.

"Mrs. Pittman," the butler interrupted, "beating her in front of everyone like this..."

"I'm teaching her to behave!" Tessa screamed, her voice cracking. "She's a compulsive liar, and now she's pretending to be an heiress. If I don't set her straight, she'll be unstoppable."

She raised the stick again, but I caught it mid-swing, locking eyes with her. "Go on and hit me! Kill me, and your secrets die with me!"

Her hand froze in the air, her eyes flashing with raw fear.

"You're full of it!" she screeched, swinging the stick with bone-breaking force.

Unable to dodge, I closed my eyes and braced myself for the strike. In the nick of time, a frail figure threw herself in front of me.

The stick cracked against flesh with a sickening thud, but I felt no pain. My eyes flew open to see Candace, our old nanny, crumpled before me.

Her back was torn open by the blow, but she clenched her teeth, refusing to make a sound.

"Candace!" I gasped.

Tessa's face contorted with rage. "You meddling hag! Who let you in here?"

Candace ignored her and clutched my hand, her eyes brimming with tears. "Miss, you're finally back."

My heart skipped a beat. Candace had raised me. She was the only person I trusted in the house.

Five years ago, when I was forced to leave, she'd chased my car, sobbing, until it vanished from sight. Now, she'd taken a blow for me without hesitation.

I touched her back gently, my voice shaking. "Does it hurt?"

She shook her head, tears streaming down her cheeks. "Not a bit. I'm just glad to see you again."

Tessa was livid, raising the stick again. "Drag these troublemakers out!"

The servants hesitated, then stepped forward. Candace spun around, spreading her arms to shield me, her voice trembling but fierce. "Don't you dare touch Miss Wendy Pittman!"

Her glare, sharp as a blade, froze the servants in place.

Tessa trembled with fury. "This is mutiny! A servant defying the master?"

She screamed at the housekeeper, "What are you standing there for? Get rid of her!"

The housekeeper swung, the stick cracking against Candace's spine. She groaned, her body buckling.

"Candace!" I roared, pulling her behind me.

"Protecting a servant? You're as low as they come!" Tessa sneered, then turned to the housekeeper. "Keep going!"

"I dare you!" I shot back, my voice like ice.

Tessa froze, stunned by the fire in my eyes. Bianca seized the moment, fake-crying. "Mom, look at her! A nanny means more to her than I do!"

Tessa's rage reignited. She grabbed the stick and swung again. "I'll teach you respect, you ungrateful wretch!"

I shielded Candace, bracing for impact, when a deep, commanding voice thundered from the entrance. "Who dares lay a hand on my granddaughter?"

Hakon's eyes darkened, a storm brewing. He grabbed his phone and dialed a number. "Find out where Bianca and Tessa Pittman are staying. I want them out of this city by midnight."I gasped, "Hakon..."He hung up, his gaze softening. "Nobody hurts you. "Until Rupert came back, I was in the dark." Jared's eyes reddened, his voice breaking. "These past five years, I missed you every day.""Missed me?" I scoffed, my voice sharp. "Missed me while you were cozying up with Bianca? Nearly marrying her?"He went silent, his face crumpling."Time's up," I said, turning to leave. He dropped to his knees, the lobby gasping around us. He pleaded, "Please, give me one more chance. I swear, you're the only one I'll ever love."I looked down at him. "You had your chance, but you blew it."Suddenly, a shrill voice cut through the air. "Wendy Pittman!"It was Bianca, now a shadow of her former self. Her face was sallow, and her hair disheveled.Tessa stood beside her, her expression complex."Wendy," Bianca said, her smile venomous. "It's been a while."I ignored her, turning to leave, but Tessa stepped in front of me, wringing her hands. "Wendy, wait."She looked much older than the last time I saw her. The wrinkles at the corners of her

Hakon's lips twitched into a half-smile. "Not quite. Just want to know you better."His candor sent a flutter through my chest, but our conversation flowed effortlessly. His mind was razor-sharp, his insights on global markets cutting through with precision. He didn't dismiss my opinions or talk over me. Instead, he listened intently, his responses thoughtful and engaging.By the time we finished, the city outside glowed with evening lights."I'll drive you home," he said, grabbing his jacket with a tone that brooked no argument. In the elevator, his cedar scent filled the space. I stole glances at his chiseled jaw, the faint stubble, and the confident way he carried himself."Caught you staring," he muttered, turning with a playful glint in his eyes.My cheeks burned, and I quickly looked away.He chuckled, his voice low and warm. "Don't worry. It means I'm not completely striking out."His car, a sleek black Maybach, glided through the night. He opened the door for me, his ha

Jared's words struck like a knife, twisting in my chest.I raised an eyebrow. "So, you're pleading her case now?"Jared didn't answer, but the guilt in his eyes said enough. I laughed, the sound hollow. "Do you know what these five years were like for me?"My voice shook with emotion. "I barely slept, pouring everything into caring for Rupert. I never complained, always dreaming of coming back to you."I locked eyes with him. "And you? You were playing house with Bianca, nearly putting a ring on her finger."He opened his mouth, but nothing came out. When I stood up to leave, he reached out for me. "Wendy.""Don't touch me!" I snapped, stepping back. "The moment you chose her, we were done."Outside, the sunlight stung my eyes.I took out my phone and texted Rupert: [I'm calling off the engagement with Jared.]Blinking hard, I forced the tears back. This was for the best. "Thank you for protecting me."She sobbed, unable to speak. After the doctor bandaged my wounds, I collapsed onto my bed, my mind racing.Five years ago, Tessa guilt-tripped me into going abroad, claiming Bianca was too frail to care for Rupert. A text came from an unknown number.[It's Jared Reilly. Heard you're back. Can we meet?]I stared at the screen, torn between hope and dread. ...The voice struck like lightning, silencing the hall. All eyes turned to the entrance, where an elderly man stood, leaning on a cane.Rupert Pittman stood tall, flanked by a group of bodyguards. His sharp gaze swept the room, softening with anguish when it landed on me."Grandpa!" I cried out.Five years had aged him, his hair now fully gray, but his commanding presence hadn't dimmed."Rupert?" Tessa gasped, the stick slipping from her hand and clattering to the floor.Bianca shrank behind her, trembling like a leaf.Rupert stepped forward, his hand brushing my swollen cheek. "Don't worry. I've got your back."His words broke me, and I collapsed into his arms, sobbing. He patted my back gently, but when he saw the bruises on my skin, his eyes flashed with lethal rage.He turned to Tessa, his voice dropped to a chilling growl. "Is this how you treat my granddaughter?"Tessa's lips quivered. "It's not what you think. Wendy was causing a scene.""Stop lying!" Rupert roared,
