Chapter 1

I walked past the end of the first row of pews.

My heels crushed the rose petals scattered across the floor, grinding them into brown stains. I walked up onto the altar, grabbed Lucia Ferrante by the wrist, and removed the ring from her left ring finger.

I had spent seven months designing that ring. Engraved inside the band were Dante Corleone's and my initials.

The chapel fell deathly silent.

Lucia shrank into Dante's arms like a startled fawn.

"Mi Dispiace, Camilla. I had no idea the ring meant so much to you…"

Dante frowned. "You're making a fuss over nothing, Camilla. We're just rehearsing the ceremony."

I looked at him, clutching the ring tightly in my palm. The sharp edges dug painfully into my hand.

"Dante, does she not know that you're my fiance?"

His expression stiffened for a second.

Lucia looked at me with those innocent, tear-filled eyes before turning to Dante.

"I… I know. That's why I feel so bad…"

She knew. She knew Dante was my fiance. She knew I had waited two long years for this wedding rehearsal.

And yet she'd still shown up today wearing a wedding dress, stood next to Dante, and made him say "I do" in front of God—the "I do" that was supposed to belong to me.

The priest awkwardly closed the Messale.

"So… what should we do about the rest of the ceremony?"

I looked at Dante calmly, while Lucia stared at him with puppy-dog eyes and a pout.

He rubbed the bridge of his nose. He always did that whenever he had to make a difficult decision.

"Let's just finish the ceremony."

A flicker of delight clearly crossed Lucia's eyes, but she waved her hands, feigning reluctance.

"No, no. We shouldn't continue. It'll upset Camilla."

"Lucia, you're always thinking about everyone else," Dante said with a sigh.

Tears finally spilled from her eyes.

"I never meant to upset Camilla, Dante. Mi Dispiace. I just wanted Davide up in heaven to see what I would look like if I had married him."

This time, Dante didn't hesitate.

"Finish it."

They stood side by side on the altar, and the priest reluctantly went through the vows again. After they finished that section of the ceremony, Lucia suddenly lowered her head and timidly mentioned that she and Davide had once promised each other different versions of the vow, and that she'd like Davide to witness them all.

Dante looked at me.

"One last time."

I stood to the side, holding up the enormous train of my wedding dress, and watched them say "I do" to each other again and again.

I had spent more than six months going back and forth with the wedding planner to plan the decor for this venue.

Both Dante and I were usually swamped with work. There were always various Famiglia matters to deal with, so I could only pull out my phone and work on the details of our wedding late at night.

And yet, here Dante was, standing in the venue I had personally designed, exchanging vows meant for me with another woman.

Once they had gone through all the different versions of the vows, a tiny gasp suddenly escaped Lucia.

"I… I think I forgot to record it. What should I do? I wanted to bring it to Davide's grave and show it to him."

She cried so pitifully, tears falling one after another.

"Va Bene. We can just do it again," Dante said.

And so by the time they finished going through Lucia's chosen versions of the ceremony again, three whole hours had passed.

Wiping the sweat from his forehead, the priest reminded us that if we didn't start our rehearsal soon, we wouldn't have enough time for the actual wedding that afternoon.

Dante finally stepped down from the altar and walked back over to me.

"Camilla, it's just the rehearsal this morning anyway. It's not important. We still have the real wedding this afternoon, but Lucia only gets this one chance today."

I looked straight into his eyes.

"I only have today as well, Dante."

Lucia eventually found me, bringing her drama with her. Before I could even react, she dropped to her knees with a loud thud, tears streaming down her face."Camilla, please forgive Dante. It was all my fault. If you have to hate someone, hate me. Don't hate him. He didn't know anything!"I had no idea what kind of act she was pulling this time, nor did I know what right she thought she had to speak on Dante's behalf.Still crying, she crawled toward me. I stepped back a couple of steps, avoiding her hands as she tried to reach for my pant leg."Are you done?"She blinked, caught off guard."If you're done, then leave. You're not welcome here."She started crying even harder. "If you don't forgive me, I'm not getting up!"I nodded. "Stay on your knees then."I had never claimed to be a particularly nice person, and I had no intention of falling for her absurd guilt trip. If she wanted to kneel, she could go right ahead and kneel.Dante, having gotten word somehow, soon came

Life in the small coastal town was pretty laid-back, and I quickly bonded with the dockworkers' kids. One day, one of the kids used a pencil to draw a crooked, lopsided fish. Across its belly, he wrote, "Ms. Colombo".I grabbed a red pen and retaliated by drawing an even uglier fish next to it, writing "Little Brats" on the stomach. Then we looked at each other and burst out laughing.Suddenly, I heard someone calling my name from the entrance to the docks. I turned around and found Dante standing there. He had lost a lot of weight. The black suit I had once had custom-made for him no longer fit quite right. The kid beside me glanced back and forth between Dante and me."There's a story here, huh?" he asked, winking at me.I couldn't help laughing. "It's just someone I used to know."The light in Dante's eyes instantly dimmed.I handed out some candy to the kids, and they scurried off happily.Dante walked up to me. His face was filled with grief."Mi Dispiace, Camilla. I'v

Even after all that, Lucia still refused to leave the Corleone estate. She locked herself in Davide's room, refusing to eat or drink.Maria eventually caved."Maybe let's just leave things like this for now, Dante. She needs some time."But Dante didn't budge. "She can continue getting treatment at the hospital. The Famiglia will cover all the legitimate medical expenses. That's the last bit of mercy I'm willing to give her."The door suddenly flew open from the inside. Lucia stood in the doorway, disbelief written all over her face."You're kicking me out?"Dante looked up at her, his expression cold."You never belonged here in the first place. If it weren't for Davide, you never would've been able to set foot inside the Corleone estate."And more importantly, Davide wanted you out of this Famiglia."Tears welled up in Lucia's eyes."Davide's already dead. Do you expect me to die with him?"Dante stared at her as he enunciated each word carefully. "Haven't you been saying

Lucia was eventually talked down from the rooftop. But as she was helped back to her room, she clung tightly to Dante's sleeve, refusing to let go.Over the next few days, she remained highly emotional, shouting Davide's name into the air all day long. Each time Dante tried to leave to look for me, Maria would summon him back."Something happened to Lucia. Come home quick," she'd say.On the 20th day after my departure, Dante discussed with Maria the idea of packing up Davide's belongings. Leaving them out in the open was only constantly reopening old wounds for Lucia, and that wasn't good for her recovery. But Lucia refused. She grabbed hold of the doorframe and sobbed so hard she could barely breathe."Maria, please, don't touch his things. I'm begging you. Leave me something to remember him by."Dante watched her in silence for a long time before suddenly speaking up."Why do you keep refusing to let us look through Davide's belongings?"Lucia froze."I… I just miss Davide

At first, Dante didn't believe I would actually leave.By the time our friends brought it up, I was already in a small coastal town in southwestern Floravane. The rest of the Famiglia knew what had happened, but they didn't say anything about it. They simply handed over a few minor smuggling routes and a couple of legitimate food processing plants for me to run.It was their way of letting me get away for a while. On my first night, the sea breeze slipped through the gaps in the shutters.I sat in a swivel chair, both hands wrapped around a cup of coffee, while my phone filled up with missed calls from unknown numbers.I didn't answer a single one.The next morning, the manager of the branch office took me down to inspect the docks, where a crew of shirtless dockworkers was sweating under the sun. There were no flowers, no wedding dress, no tearful Lucia, and no disappointed looks on Dante's face. There was just the salty scent of the sea breeze and the endless, vibrant blue oce

By the time I rushed over, night had fallen completely.Dante stood at the edge of the rooftop, one hand extended.Lucia, wearing that old wedding dress, was sitting on the very edge. Her veil whipped violently in the wind, and her face was streaked with tears."Dante, I know I shouldn't live in the past. That's why I wanted to borrow three minutes to say goodbye to Davide. If I can't even have this one wish, then… I think I'd rather just go join Davide!"With that, she leaned forward as if to jump.Dante turned pale with fright."Lucia, come down first."I promise you. As long as you come down, the wedding day will belong to you and Davide. You can say a proper goodbye to him!"Then I watched as Lucia threw herself into his arms, sobbing like a wounded little animal. Dante took off his coat and wrapped it around her.As he walked past me, the first thing out of his mouth was an accusation."Did you really have to push her this far?" he asked, his face filled with disappointm
