Chapter 2

Author: Clear Dreams
"Camilla, you're being too petty," Dante said, his brows furrowing slightly, a hint of exhaustion creeping into his voice.

"Lucia has had a hard life these past few years. She just wants to hear the vows—vows she'll never get the chance to hear in this lifetime—in front of God. Davide died because of me. I owe him this."

I was just about to say something when the priest came over and asked us to step up to the altar.

"Ms. Colombo, stand a little closer to Mr. Corleone. Yes, smile. Look a bit happier!"

I forced the corners of my mouth upward.

With the priest officiating, Dante took my hand and began reciting the vows. But his phone kept lighting up and vibrating continuously in the pocket of his black suit.

Every notification was from Lucia, one after another.

"I solemnly swear before God…"

The first message read, "Dante, did I cause you trouble?"

"...for richer or for poorer…"

Another message read, "Will Camilla hate me even more now?"

"...to love and to cherish…"

And yet another read, "I just suddenly miss Davide so much."

Dante couldn't help but constantly glance at his phone. The crease between his brows grew deeper with every message.

"Mr. Corleone, please look at Ms. Colombo," the priest called out again.

When he finally raised his head, his gaze still lingered on the phone screen.

Suddenly, I didn't want to smile anymore.

When the video clips of the rehearsal were posted in the family group chat, the very first video was of Dante and Lucia standing together on the altar. She was wearing a wedding dress, while he was dressed in a custom suit.

Light poured in from the domed ceiling, bathing them in a glow that made them look almost sacred—like a match made in heaven.

Dante's Mamma, Maria Morelli, was the first to reply.

"What a Bellissimo video!"

Soon, others jumped in.

"Lucia looks absolutely gorgeous in a wedding dress."

"If only Davide were still here… Today would've been so perfect."

"Dante looks the part standing next to her too. The two Fratelli always did look alike."

Holding my phone, I stood in front of the mirror next to the confessional, quietly reading through their messages.

They had plenty to say, and it all revolved around how Bellissimo Lucia looked and how perfect she and Dante looked together.

Meanwhile, Lucia sat in the front pew, her head bowed as she wiped away her tears. She cried quietly, her shoulders trembling with each sob. A small patch of lace across the chest of her wedding dress had darkened with tears.

Finally, someone in the group chat asked, "Wait. Why are Dante and Lucia the ones rehearsing? Where's Camilla?"

Dante glanced at the messages. He typed a few words, then deleted them. In the end, he turned off his phone altogether.

I waited for a long time, but he offered no explanation.

Finally, he walked toward me.

"Tomorrow is the anniversary of Davide's death," he said in a low voice. "I don't want to trigger her in the group chat."

"Then what about me? What are they going to think of me, Dante?"

I stared at him, and he froze for a second.

"You're my fiancee. I'll explain everything. Just don't make a scene in the group chat, Va Bene, Camilla?"

"Dante, when you exchanged those vows with me just now, were you really thinking about me?" I asked, my voice hoarse.

Still sitting in the pew, Lucia lifted her head, tears streaming down her face.

"Camilla, don't blame Dante. This is all my fault. I just miss Davide too much."

I turned toward her, and a cold scoff escaped me.

"You're right. It is your fault."

Lucia blinked. Then she covered her face and began sobbing again.

Dante's expression darkened instantly. "Camilla Colombo!"

He rarely called me by my full name. In our Famiglia, using someone's full name meant they had done something seriously wrong.

Lucia's tears fell even faster. "I'll have them delete those videos right now. It's all my fault! I shouldn't have come!"

Dante caught her hand. "Don't."

Then he turned to me. "Camilla, you know Lucia hasn't been able to move on these past few years."

Of course I knew.

Ever since Davide Corleone died, Dante had spent every anniversary of his death with Lucia. When she cried, he went to her. When she wanted to take Davide's car out for a late-night drive, he went with her.

Once, she swallowed a whole bunch of sleeping pills, and Dante walked away from a negotiation table without a second thought, rushing her to the hospital to get her stomach pumped.

I had never stopped him.

I loved him, and so I respected his choices.

I understood that Davide's death was a wound he carried inside him, and he needed to heal it by making amends to Lucia.

But today, it suddenly struck me that his amends had gone on for far too long, and they had crossed way too many lines.

He always placed me second to Lucia, as if that were the most natural thing in the world.

And that kind of love? I no longer wanted it.

Lucia eventually found me, bringing her drama with her. Before I could even react, she dropped to her knees with a loud thud, tears streaming down her face."Camilla, please forgive Dante. It was all my fault. If you have to hate someone, hate me. Don't hate him. He didn't know anything!"I had no idea what kind of act she was pulling this time, nor did I know what right she thought she had to speak on Dante's behalf.Still crying, she crawled toward me. I stepped back a couple of steps, avoiding her hands as she tried to reach for my pant leg."Are you done?"She blinked, caught off guard."If you're done, then leave. You're not welcome here."She started crying even harder. "If you don't forgive me, I'm not getting up!"I nodded. "Stay on your knees then."I had never claimed to be a particularly nice person, and I had no intention of falling for her absurd guilt trip. If she wanted to kneel, she could go right ahead and kneel.Dante, having gotten word somehow, soon came

Life in the small coastal town was pretty laid-back, and I quickly bonded with the dockworkers' kids. One day, one of the kids used a pencil to draw a crooked, lopsided fish. Across its belly, he wrote, "Ms. Colombo".I grabbed a red pen and retaliated by drawing an even uglier fish next to it, writing "Little Brats" on the stomach. Then we looked at each other and burst out laughing.Suddenly, I heard someone calling my name from the entrance to the docks. I turned around and found Dante standing there. He had lost a lot of weight. The black suit I had once had custom-made for him no longer fit quite right. The kid beside me glanced back and forth between Dante and me."There's a story here, huh?" he asked, winking at me.I couldn't help laughing. "It's just someone I used to know."The light in Dante's eyes instantly dimmed.I handed out some candy to the kids, and they scurried off happily.Dante walked up to me. His face was filled with grief."Mi Dispiace, Camilla. I'v

Even after all that, Lucia still refused to leave the Corleone estate. She locked herself in Davide's room, refusing to eat or drink.Maria eventually caved."Maybe let's just leave things like this for now, Dante. She needs some time."But Dante didn't budge. "She can continue getting treatment at the hospital. The Famiglia will cover all the legitimate medical expenses. That's the last bit of mercy I'm willing to give her."The door suddenly flew open from the inside. Lucia stood in the doorway, disbelief written all over her face."You're kicking me out?"Dante looked up at her, his expression cold."You never belonged here in the first place. If it weren't for Davide, you never would've been able to set foot inside the Corleone estate."And more importantly, Davide wanted you out of this Famiglia."Tears welled up in Lucia's eyes."Davide's already dead. Do you expect me to die with him?"Dante stared at her as he enunciated each word carefully. "Haven't you been saying

Lucia was eventually talked down from the rooftop. But as she was helped back to her room, she clung tightly to Dante's sleeve, refusing to let go.Over the next few days, she remained highly emotional, shouting Davide's name into the air all day long. Each time Dante tried to leave to look for me, Maria would summon him back."Something happened to Lucia. Come home quick," she'd say.On the 20th day after my departure, Dante discussed with Maria the idea of packing up Davide's belongings. Leaving them out in the open was only constantly reopening old wounds for Lucia, and that wasn't good for her recovery. But Lucia refused. She grabbed hold of the doorframe and sobbed so hard she could barely breathe."Maria, please, don't touch his things. I'm begging you. Leave me something to remember him by."Dante watched her in silence for a long time before suddenly speaking up."Why do you keep refusing to let us look through Davide's belongings?"Lucia froze."I… I just miss Davide

At first, Dante didn't believe I would actually leave.By the time our friends brought it up, I was already in a small coastal town in southwestern Floravane. The rest of the Famiglia knew what had happened, but they didn't say anything about it. They simply handed over a few minor smuggling routes and a couple of legitimate food processing plants for me to run.It was their way of letting me get away for a while. On my first night, the sea breeze slipped through the gaps in the shutters.I sat in a swivel chair, both hands wrapped around a cup of coffee, while my phone filled up with missed calls from unknown numbers.I didn't answer a single one.The next morning, the manager of the branch office took me down to inspect the docks, where a crew of shirtless dockworkers was sweating under the sun. There were no flowers, no wedding dress, no tearful Lucia, and no disappointed looks on Dante's face. There was just the salty scent of the sea breeze and the endless, vibrant blue oce

By the time I rushed over, night had fallen completely.Dante stood at the edge of the rooftop, one hand extended.Lucia, wearing that old wedding dress, was sitting on the very edge. Her veil whipped violently in the wind, and her face was streaked with tears."Dante, I know I shouldn't live in the past. That's why I wanted to borrow three minutes to say goodbye to Davide. If I can't even have this one wish, then… I think I'd rather just go join Davide!"With that, she leaned forward as if to jump.Dante turned pale with fright."Lucia, come down first."I promise you. As long as you come down, the wedding day will belong to you and Davide. You can say a proper goodbye to him!"Then I watched as Lucia threw herself into his arms, sobbing like a wounded little animal. Dante took off his coat and wrapped it around her.As he walked past me, the first thing out of his mouth was an accusation."Did you really have to push her this far?" he asked, his face filled with disappointm
