Chapter 3

Author: Springs
The dinner had turned into a complete fiasco.

Thomas flipped the table, while Elizabeth's eyes welled up with tears.

Julian tore the divorce papers into shreds. Grabbing my wrist, he growled, "Did you really have to make a scene tonight, Jennifer?"

Penelope, on the other hand, was sobbing hysterically.

"When we were kids, Julian promised me that he'd give me a wedding someday. If you were upset about it, you could've talked to me about it privately. Why did you have to humiliate me in front of everyone?"

I yanked my wrist free.

"Fine. I'll give you what you want," I said coolly. "I paid the deposit for the wedding ceremony, and I was the one who booked the venue. Consider it my wedding gift to the two of you."

With that, I turned around and left.

"Wait! Jennifer!" Julian's friends called after me.

Julian came running after me. Once he caught up with me, he wrapped an arm around my waist and softened his voice.

"I made a promise to Penelope. If I don't follow through, she'll make a huge fuss," he explained.

He took my hand and pressed it against his cheek. "I just want to give you a perfect wedding, honey."

Everyone else had come out of the house as well. They were all trying to help Julian smooth things over with me.

"Come on, Jennifer. You've only been married for a month. Why are you already talking about a divorce? Besides, if you actually go through with it, you'd be the first one to regret it. After all, you put so much effort into getting your marriage registered."

"She's just putting on an act to scare Julian!"

"Let's hit the bar tonight! We'll drink our worries away and forget about everything that happened today!"

A reminder for tomorrow's flight popped up on my phone.

I scoffed inwardly as I listened to their speculations.

…

In the end, the whole group dragged me to the bar.

Everyone else drank and had a blast while I sat off to the side, refusing to touch a single glass. After a few rounds, somebody suddenly said, "If it weren't for Jennifer, Penelope and Julian might actually have ended up together."

Penelope smacked the person on the shoulder, but her gaze went straight to me.

"That's not true!" she protested. "You're going to make Jennifer upset again."

As the bar lights flashed overhead, someone laughed.

"She just cares about Julian too much! She'd probably chain herself to him if she could."

"Hey, what do you guys think would happen if Jennifer found out about what happened between Penelope and Julian?"

My hand jerked, and I spilled juice all over the table.

"What are you talking about?" I asked.

Julian immediately reached over and clamped a hand over his friend's mouth. But unfortunately for him, the man was already drunk. Despite his efforts to stop him, his friend still told me everything.

"Last month, Penelope was drugged at a bar, and Julian took it upon himself to deal with it. Nobody else could handle it. He was the only one who could!"

My chest tightened, and I struggled to breathe.

"Is this what you meant by platonic, Julian? Are you going to claim that nothing happened between the two of you?" I snarled.

Julian shrugged. "Penelope is a good friend of mine. I couldn't just stand by and watch her suffer."

He had plenty of other ways to handle that situation, but he still chose that one.

Penelope glanced at me before she dropped herself onto Julian's lap. "What do you think Julian and I were up to whenever I borrowed him from you, Jen?"

I bit down on the inside of my cheek and said nothing.

When I didn't reply, she continued slowly, "He didn't just take care of trivial matters like fixing furniture or accompanying me on hikes. I also borrowed Julian so he could take care of my… needs."

My chest heaved. I grabbed an empty bottle from the table and tried to strike Penelope with it. But before I could, Julian got to his feet and caught my wrist.

His friends crowded around us and tried to provoke me even further.

"Someone's angry. Is she going to throw another set of divorce papers in his face?"

"Julian's not going to fall for the same trick twice."

They shoved their phones in my face and took pictures of my furious expression.

"Yes, that's the look! We can compare it with pictures of her crying face when she's begging him to take her back," someone said with a laugh.

Everyone in the bar was staring at us.

I felt completely humiliated. But through the whole fiasco, Julian never said anything to defend me.

Time passed in the blink of an eye. The next time Julian and I met, it was to finalize our divorce. He looked much more haggard than before. His dark circles were incredibly apparent, and his jaw was rough with unshaven stubble."Jennifer…" The moment he saw me, he instinctively reached toward me. But to his dismay, I stepped around him and stood next to Dylan instead."I'm sorry, Mr. Spencer. We're already divorced."When I finally received my divorce decree, I suddenly felt as though an entire lifetime had passed.Dylan kissed my cheek. "I already got us a spot in line to get our marriage license."Hearing this, Julian stopped in his tracks. He looked down at the divorce decree he was holding and stared at it blankly."I still have our marriage license, Jennifer," he told me.I flashed him a smile. "Sorry. I threw mine away."Julian clenched his fists and slowly walked toward me. Seeing this, Dylan instinctively stepped in front of me, shielding me from him."Jennifer, I

The security team finally arrived and escorted the entire group out. "Don't let them anywhere near my house again," Dylan instructed the head of security.Julian and Penelope hadn't left. When Penelope saw how Dylan protected me, she smirked.Walking up to him, she casually mentioned, "Did you know that Jennifer can't have children? I'm not like her, though. Julian and I got pregnant on our first try."Dylan stared at her coldly. "So? What are you trying to say? Are you expecting me to congratulate you after you've insulted my wife in my own home?"Startled by his intimidating demeanor, Penelope stumbled backward and collided with Julian. "Y-You don't care?" she stammered.I grabbed her purse from the couch and hurled it toward them. "Take your things and get out! You're not welcome here!"Penelope wanted to say something else, but Julian grabbed her arm and pulled her toward the door."What are you doing?" she cried. "Let go of me!""We're leaving!" Julian snapped, grippin

With a trembling hand, Julian finally signed the divorce papers. Afterward, Dylan tried to check the document, but Julian clutched the papers tightly and refused to let go. Staring at me with teary eyes, Julian cried, "I'm sorry, Jennifer. I didn't realize how much I'd hurt you. Can you give me another chance? Can we please start over?"He must've finally realized that I was serious about leaving him.Scoffing, I replied, "Where was this attitude before? It's too late now. I already have a new husband."As my words fell, I deliberately kissed Dylan's cheek in front of him. All of a sudden, a commotion broke out outside of the villa. "You can't go in! The owner of the villa hasn't permitted you to enter!" a security guard barked as he tried to stop the people from entering the house. It was Julian's friends. Samuel shoved the guard aside and spat on the ground. "Go to hell! We're here to see our friend's wife. How dare you stop us from meeting up with her?" The moment they

After a few quick rounds of toasts, Dylan and I returned to the villa. It was well past midnight by the time we went to sleep. When I woke up the next morning, my lower back ached.Dylan wrapped his arms around me from behind and bit my shoulder again. I hissed in pain. "Are you part dog, Dylan?"Kissing the spot he'd just bitten, he replied in a low and raspy voice, "I'm just jealous.""Jealous of what?""The fact that he got to spend three years with you.""Are you trying to mark your territory then? How childish." I pushed him away with an annoyed huff. Just then, one of the housekeepers knocked at our bedroom door, but she didn't enter the room. "Mr. and Mrs. Scott, two people are waiting downstairs. They're asking to see Mrs. Scott."When Dylan and I went downstairs, Julian and Penelope were sitting on the couch. The moment Julian saw me, he shot to his feet. When his eyes fell on the mark on my shoulder, he instantly frowned."You do realize she's married, righ

The Scott family was one of the most prestigious families in Westbridge. Even though Julian was from somewhere as far away as Oakville, he had heard of the Scotts too. On top of that, he knew that my ex-boyfriend—the man I'd broken up with because we couldn't make a long-distance relationship work—was Dylan Scott."So?" Dylan slipped his hands into his pockets and walked over to Julian. "Is it my turn to write you a check now?"Julian's face paled. He instinctively looked toward me, but I did as he did and looked away without saying a word.My mother stepped in to de-escalate the situation. "Maybe you and Jennifer are simply not meant to be, Julian. It's time to let her go," she advised.Dad, on the other hand, let out a cold snort. He made no attempt to hide his displeasure toward Julian.Dylan's lips curved up into a faint smirk. "Don't worry, Henry, Eleanor. I'll handle this."He deliberately addressed my parents by their first names to show Julian how close they were. H
