Chapter 4

Author: Springs
I didn't know how I managed to leave that place.

Julian had held onto my wrist extremely tightly because he was afraid I'd hurt Penelope. My wrist was dark with bruises, but the pain in my wrist was nothing compared to the ache in my chest.

A light rain had begun to fall, and I struggled to flag down a cab by the side of the road. Laughter and chatter spilled from the bar behind me, but no one from the group came after me.

Suddenly, my phone lit up with a message from Dylan Scott.

"Which wedding invitation design do you prefer?"

My fingers trembled as I typed out a reply.

"Let's go with the first one."

I reposted the wedding invitation Dylan had posted on social media before hopping into my cab. Some time later, Julian called me.

"They went too far tonight, Jennifer," he said over the phone.

"So?"

My voice was flat, and my reaction seemed to have caught him off guard. After a long pause, he said, "Penelope's pregnant."

My hand started to shake, and my voice came out dry and strained. "Why are you only telling me this now? Why didn't you tell me that the two of you were sneaking around behind my back?"

He didn't answer my questions. Instead, he went on.

"She's keeping the baby. Once the child is born, we'll raise the child as our own."

"You want me to raise her child?"

My voice shook with anger. When I turned around and saw their wedding photo, I grabbed it and smashed it onto the floor.

"What the hell do you take me for, Julian Spencer?" I screamed.

I put the call on speaker.

His voice came through clearly, but his tone was eerily calm. I could almost picture him sitting next to Penelope, calm and composed.

"The doctor said you'll have trouble conceiving. Keeping this child will be good for you, too. You'll still be my wife, and she'll remain a good friend of mine."

I shut my eyes and sank wearily to the floor.

When I stayed silent for a long time, Julian added, "After all of this is over, I'll give you the wedding you've always wanted."

But to me, it had never been about the ceremony.

Last year, Julian and I were crossing the street when a car suddenly lost control and came barreling toward us. Without even thinking, I pushed him out of the way, and I ended up in a pool of my own blood.

When I woke up, the doctor told me that my chances of having children were extremely low. Hearing this, Julian pulled me into his arms and sobbed hysterically.

"We don't need children, Jennifer. It'll just be the two of us for the rest of our lives," he told me.

Now, he wanted me to raise the child of the woman he'd cheated on me with.

I used to love him dearly. But now, I just felt utterly exhausted.

I dragged my suitcase behind me and boarded a plane back to Westbridge.

Third-Person POV

Meanwhile, Julian and Penelope were shopping for wedding dresses.

Penelope twirled around. Then, she turned to Julian and asked, "Do I look pretty, Julian?"

Julian flashed her a smile. "You look beautiful."

Then, he pulled out his phone and casually sent Jennifer a message.

"Penelope's trying on wedding dresses. Come over and help us pick one."

Suddenly, one of his good friends, Samuel Clinton, came over and patted him on the shoulder.

"Damn, Julian. I can't believe you're actually divorcing Jennifer and getting together with Penelope," said Samuel.

Julian frowned and grabbed Samuel's wrist. "What did you just say? What divorce?"

Samuel stared at him in confusion. "Jennifer's social media post? Didn't she post that wedding invitation because the two of you are divorced?"

Julian hastily took Samuel's phone from him and checked Jennifer's social media page. When he clicked on the wedding invitation she had reposted, he realized that the groom was someone named Dylan Scott.

"Why aren't you the groom, Julian?" Samuel pressed him for answers.

Julian immediately pulled out his own phone and tried to message Jennifer.

"What's with the wedding invitation? Where are you?"

To his dismay, the message wouldn't go through. A glaring red exclamation mark had appeared next to it.

"She blocked me!" Julian exclaimed. "How could she?"

Time passed in the blink of an eye. The next time Julian and I met, it was to finalize our divorce. He looked much more haggard than before. His dark circles were incredibly apparent, and his jaw was rough with unshaven stubble."Jennifer…" The moment he saw me, he instinctively reached toward me. But to his dismay, I stepped around him and stood next to Dylan instead."I'm sorry, Mr. Spencer. We're already divorced."When I finally received my divorce decree, I suddenly felt as though an entire lifetime had passed.Dylan kissed my cheek. "I already got us a spot in line to get our marriage license."Hearing this, Julian stopped in his tracks. He looked down at the divorce decree he was holding and stared at it blankly."I still have our marriage license, Jennifer," he told me.I flashed him a smile. "Sorry. I threw mine away."Julian clenched his fists and slowly walked toward me. Seeing this, Dylan instinctively stepped in front of me, shielding me from him."Jennifer, I

The security team finally arrived and escorted the entire group out. "Don't let them anywhere near my house again," Dylan instructed the head of security.Julian and Penelope hadn't left. When Penelope saw how Dylan protected me, she smirked.Walking up to him, she casually mentioned, "Did you know that Jennifer can't have children? I'm not like her, though. Julian and I got pregnant on our first try."Dylan stared at her coldly. "So? What are you trying to say? Are you expecting me to congratulate you after you've insulted my wife in my own home?"Startled by his intimidating demeanor, Penelope stumbled backward and collided with Julian. "Y-You don't care?" she stammered.I grabbed her purse from the couch and hurled it toward them. "Take your things and get out! You're not welcome here!"Penelope wanted to say something else, but Julian grabbed her arm and pulled her toward the door."What are you doing?" she cried. "Let go of me!""We're leaving!" With a trembling hand, Julian finally signed the divorce papers. Afterward, Dylan tried to check the document, but Julian clutched the papers tightly and refused to let go. Staring at me with teary eyes, Julian cried, "I'm sorry, Jennifer. I didn't realize how much I'd hurt you. Can you give me another chance? Can we please start over?"He must've finally realized that I was serious about leaving him.Scoffing, I replied, "Where was this attitude before? It's too late now. I already have a new husband."As my words fell, I deliberately kissed Dylan's cheek in front of him. All of a sudden, a commotion broke out outside of the villa. "You can't go in! The owner of the villa hasn't permitted you to enter!" a security guard barked as he tried to stop the people from entering the house. It was Julian's friends. Samuel shoved the guard aside and spat on the ground. "Go to hell! We're here to see our friend's wife. How dare you stop us from meeting up with her?" The moment they

After a few quick rounds of toasts, Dylan and I returned to the villa. It was well past midnight by the time we went to sleep. When I woke up the next morning, my lower back ached.Dylan wrapped his arms around me from behind and bit my shoulder again. I hissed in pain. "Are you part dog, Dylan?"Kissing the spot he'd just bitten, he replied in a low and raspy voice, "I'm just jealous.""Jealous of what?""The fact that he got to spend three years with you.""Are you trying to mark your territory then? How childish." I pushed him away with an annoyed huff. Just then, one of the housekeepers knocked at our bedroom door, but she didn't enter the room. "Mr. and Mrs. Scott, two people are waiting downstairs. They're asking to see Mrs. Scott."When Dylan and I went downstairs, Julian and Penelope were sitting on the couch. The moment Julian saw me, he shot to his feet. When his eyes fell on the mark on my shoulder, he instantly frowned."You do realize she's married, righ

The Scott family was one of the most prestigious families in Westbridge. Even though Julian was from somewhere as far away as Oakville, he had heard of the Scotts too. On top of that, he knew that my ex-boyfriend—the man I'd broken up with because we couldn't make a long-distance relationship work—was Dylan Scott."So?" Dylan slipped his hands into his pockets and walked over to Julian. "Is it my turn to write you a check now?"Julian's face paled. "Maybe you and Jennifer are simply not meant to be, Julian. It's time to let her go," she advised.Dad, on the other hand, let out a cold snort. He made no attempt to hide his displeasure toward Julian.Dylan's lips curved up into a faint smirk. "Don't worry, Henry, Eleanor.
