Chapter 2

Autor: Paper Relic
My voice was damaged ten years ago.

That should have been the best year of my life. My family was still alive and well, my career was thriving, and interview requests from within my field poured in.

It was also the year Vincent came up with a one-of-a-kind underwater proposal.

Beside a dazzling coral reef, he tenderly lowered his head and slipped a butterflyfish ring onto my finger. It symbolized lifelong devotion.

All around us, the lights on dozens of submarines flashed the same message.

[Lena, I, Vincent Felker, will love you faithfully until the day I die.]

Unfortunately, the grand proposal went awry when Hannah, who was still a salt worker back then, fell into the water. After rescuing her, I took her to the lounge to help her change.

Back then, Hannah was deeply tanned and petite. She always seemed a little insecure around others.

With my heart going out for her, I began treating her like a sister. I would care for her and help her whenever I could. I gave her a job and brought her into both my academic research and personal life.

Hannah eagerly absorbed everything I taught her and even copied my mannerisms until she had them down perfectly.

At times, even Vincent would stare at her in a daze before his brows formed a deep frown.

"I don't need you to do pointless things for me, like ironing my shirts or bringing me something for a hangover. Besides, you shouldn't copy everything Lena does. You're not her. Do you understand?"

Hannah would shrink behind me in fear and tearfully say that she only wanted to repay me.

In the past, I devoted myself to protecting her. But in return, she turned my celebration banquet into her own family-recognition ceremony.

How ridiculous. The person I had trusted as my closest friend turned out to be Dad's illegitimate daughter.

Overnight, I lost my loving and reliable father. Meanwhile, Mom was so enraged that she suffered a heart attack and became bedridden.

I could not accept that I had been the one to bring Hannah into our lives and cause Mom so much pain. Guilt and self-blame consumed me, and I cried beside Mom's hospital bed night after night.

During that dark period, Vincent stayed by my side. He told me none of it was my fault and promised that he would never betray me. He said that he would always be there for me.

I trusted him completely and drew on his support to pull myself together.

However, when I returned from my three-month underwater research expedition, I found Vincent and Hannah passionately entangled on our bed.

I practically broke down then and there. When I came to my senses, I was clutching Hannah's hair in a death grip and choking out a demand for an explanation.

Hannah stood before me with tears streaming down her face.

"I'm sorry, Lena. Don't be mad at Vincent. He missed you so much that, after having too much to drink, he mistook me for you."

Yet, the fresh and fading hickeys covering her body proved this was not a drunken mistake. Each mark tore another piece out of my heart.

I screamed and hurled everything within reach at Hannah, but Vincent stepped between us to shield her.

He looked at me with a conflicted expression.

"Lena, while you were away these past three months, I received a phone call from the future. The caller told me that I would fall in love with Hannah. I tried to ignore the prophecy, but I failed."

When I asked him why, Vincent sighed as though a weight had been lifted from his shoulders.

"Just think of it as me needing someone who'll fuss over me and depend on me. Lena, you've always been too strong-willed. Hannah's different. She's like you, but she loves me more."

I stood there, and my eyes widened with shock.

This boy had once encouraged me to pursue my ideals. I never imagined that he would become a man who faulted me for being too strong and not delicate enough.

I laughed bitterly. At that time, I was not willing to admit that after losing the love of my family, I could not even hold on to my partner.

So, I pulled out my pregnancy test results. Taking Vincent's hand, I pressed it against my lower abdomen.

Inside me, a tiny life had been growing for three months.

  • My Heart Went with the Tide   Chapter 10

After everything got taken care of, Vincent took Asher's ashes to the little cottage where I had lived for ten years. The cottage contained little more than a bed made from two wooden planks and an uneven table.I wondered if he, too, was thinking back to the year we got married.Back then, Vincent had furnished our entire home to my taste. He told me that whenever I grew weary of drifting at sea, home would always be my safe harbor. His fingers brushed over the rough, uneven walls, and he slowly teared up. He collapsed onto the bed and buried his fingers deep in his hair.Suddenly, a yellowed notebook slipped out from beneath the ragged pillow.I was momentarily taken aback as I stared at it. But Vincent had already picked it up, and he was slowly turning the pages.[I dreamed of Asher again. He said he isn't hurting anymore, and he told me not to cry.][I couldn't dive today, as the sea was too rough. I'll have to head out earlier tomorrow. I still need quite a bit more for

The caller's breath hitched briefly before the line abruptly went dead.I could only look on and be overwhelmed by the absurdity of it all.'So, this was the flimsy prophecy that had made Vincent abandon me and Asher back then,' I thought.Vincent was clearly furious. At last, he realized that the so-called prophetic call had been nothing but a lie.If the caller had truly come from the future, they would have known that I was already dead. There would have been no reason to warn Vincent not to bring me home. The only explanation was that the caller was using the same trick to make him abandon me once more.Vincent rushed back to Hannah's hospital room."Vincent, you're back."Hannah moved closer and reached for his arm. But he abruptly sidestepped her with an icy gaze. The look in his eyes made her uneasy."Why are you looking at me like that…?""Did you get someone to make that call back then?"Vincent's voice was hoarse, as though sandpaper had scraped it raw. Every word

Vincent froze in place. After a long moment, he suddenly laughed."How could that be? Selena can't be dead. The prophetic call said she'd cling to me and Hannah like a curse we could never shake."However, his confidence vanished the moment he saw my body.Edith looked at him coldly."I shouldn't have brought you here to disturb her peace, but I couldn't let you slander her even in death."Vincent stared intently at the arm protruding from beneath the white sheet. There was a scar on it. I had gotten it when I once shielded him from scalding soup.Having kissed that scar countless times before, he could not possibly mistake it.He suddenly swayed, and all the color drained from his face.I watched silently as he staggered forward and took my hand, which had long since gone cold."Lena?" He forced a smile and called my name softly."Come on, get up. I'm here to take you home."Those few simple words seemed to turn back time. They took me to the days when we were young. Vince

Vincent rushed to the location Riley had given him.He saw the words scratched into the tiny wooden marker with a fingernail. Right then, he was shaken to the core.[Here Lies Asher Jarrell, Beloved Son of Selena Jarrell.]After a long moment, he finally gritted his teeth and spoke in a hoarse voice. "That's impossible. Back then, I specifically instructed the hospital to take good care of Lena and Asher. Besides, I made sure she had a considerable sum of money to fall back on. "How could anything have happened to Asher?"Hannah stared at the grave marker, and a brief glimmer of delight crossed her eyes before she feigned concern."Vincent, Lena can hate us all she wants, but Asher was innocent. Would she really stand by and let her own child die just to make us feel guilty?"Vincent clenched his fists at her words. But the next moment, he shot to his feet."I don't believe she could've done that to Asher. I'm going to hear it from her myself."As he moved, my ghostly form wa

For a moment, everything fell silent.Vincent finally registered what he had heard when his phone slipped from his hand. His eyes burned with fury as his gaze fell on my sprawled body on the ground."Selena Jarrell, this is absurd! You can be spiteful toward me all you want, but how could you joke about Asher like this? Do you have no sense of responsibility as a mother?"Then, something seemed to occur to him, and he snorted."You think hiding Asher will keep me from finding him? Get up right now, or else, I'll never let you see him again."Vincent expected me to struggle to my feet the moment he mentioned Asher. He expected me to swallow my pride, clutch his sleeve, and beg him as I had ten years ago. That was when he was about to send me and Asher away to that deserted island.Perhaps he thought I would be just as sharp and defiant as I had been before, when I would flash him a mocking smile.Yet, no matter how fiercely he raged, I remained motionless on the ground. When I

Vincent did not understand my sign language, but he could tell where I was pointing. His expression softened slightly, and for once, he spoke to me gently. "Don't worry. I won't send you back there. Once we pick Asher up, we'll all go home. Everything will be better, then."I could barely make out what he was saying anymore. All I could tell was that he shook his head.I remembered reading in a book that a person's senses would gradually fade as they neared the end of their life. The ringing in my ears had grown deafening, and I realized that I no longer had the strength to dive into the sea again. But I still had not saved enough money to bring Asher's remains home. After thinking it over, I reached into my clothes with trembling hands and pulled something out."Take this and exchange it for money. Will that be enough?" I signed. This time, Vincent seemed to understand me. Shock flashed across his face before his expression darkened."Don't be ridiculous. You used to treasure
