Chapter 3

Author: Paper Relic
With this baby, it seemed I had finally regained the upper hand.

Vincent even agreed when I asked him to send Hannah away and never let her appear before me again.

Yet, my heart still felt unbearably empty.

Traces of Vincent and Hannah being together were everywhere. I could not shake the feeling as I stood in our marital bedroom.

With nowhere else to go, I spent night after night by Mom's hospital bed while she remained unconscious.

Vincent came to me with a wedding dress, but his eyes held no warmth when he looked at me.

He sneered. "Isn't this exactly what you wanted, Selena?"

On our wedding day, every guest arrived except Dad.

Dad had once teared up at the thought of me getting married and said he could not bear to see me leave. However, he ended up hating me for driving his illegitimate daughter away.

After the wedding, my pregnancy symptoms became increasingly severe. It got to the point that I was forced to take an extended leave from work and rest at home.

My life became a monotonous routine between the hospital and home.

One day, when I went to work to pick up some documents, I heard Dad's doting voice coming from the office.

"Don't worry, Hannah. Take your time settling here. I bribed the cook to slip something into Selena's food. She's been vomiting so badly every day that she doesn't have the energy to come here."

I froze, and Vincent's voice followed before I could even react.

"It's good that you want to improve yourself, but you're still early in your pregnancy. Don't push yourself too hard."

As he spoke, he wiped the smeared lipstick from Hannah's lips.

I stared blankly at the wedding ring on his hand. It felt as though my heart had been ripped out.

'Vincent never sent Hannah away. He and Dad even caused my severe morning sickness by deliberately slipping something into my food. This is all to get back at me for Hannah's sake,' I thought.

I stormed inside and caused a scene.

This time, Vincent did not try to placate me. He pulled Hannah into his arms and looked at me with clear annoyance.

"It's just a job. Be reasonable. You owe her this," he said.

'What did I owe Hannah? She's the one who destroyed my family, took over my job, and even stole the man I love from me. Shouldn't I be the one hurting?' I thought.

Resentment took root in my chest and spread like weeds.

I gathered all the evidence of Vincent's affair and Hannah taking over my position. But just two hours after I mailed the file, Vincent threw it back in front of me, with a hospital bill sitting on top.

He gripped my chin with a cold and detached expression.

"Lena, you need to know when to back down. Even if you don't care about yourself, you should think about your mother. Who else besides me is going to pay to keep her alive?"

When I thought of Mom still lying unconscious in her hospital bed, I gave in.

From that day on, Vincent made no effort to hide his relationship with Hannah. He took her to see the northern lights and soak in hot springs. He did everything with her that he had once done with me.

However, on their wedding day, Mom woke up.

She stumbled to the church, only to find me kneeling on the floor. I was picking up the bouquet Hannah had dropped.

My cheap bridesmaid dress was smeared with colorful frosting.

Mom learned everything from the guests' comments. Some were sympathetic, while others were mocking. She paled and, without saying a word, returned to the hospital.

Late that night, she climbed to the rooftop and sent me one final message. [Selena, I can't keep holding you back anymore. You need to be free.]

After everything got taken care of, Vincent took Asher's ashes to the little cottage where I had lived for ten years. The cottage contained little more than a bed made from two wooden planks and an uneven table.I wondered if he, too, was thinking back to the year we got married.Back then, Vincent had furnished our entire home to my taste. He told me that whenever I grew weary of drifting at sea, home would always be my safe harbor. His fingers brushed over the rough, uneven walls, and he slowly teared up. He collapsed onto the bed and buried his fingers deep in his hair.Suddenly, a yellowed notebook slipped out from beneath the ragged pillow.I was momentarily taken aback as I stared at it. But Vincent had already picked it up, and he was slowly turning the pages.[I dreamed of Asher again. He said he isn't hurting anymore, and he told me not to cry.][I couldn't dive today, as the sea was too rough. I'll have to head out earlier tomorrow. I still need quite a bit more for

The caller's breath hitched briefly before the line abruptly went dead.I could only look on and be overwhelmed by the absurdity of it all.'So, this was the flimsy prophecy that had made Vincent abandon me and Asher back then,' I thought.Vincent was clearly furious. At last, he realized that the so-called prophetic call had been nothing but a lie.If the caller had truly come from the future, they would have known that I was already dead. There would have been no reason to warn Vincent not to bring me home. The only explanation was that the caller was using the same trick to make him abandon me once more.Vincent rushed back to Hannah's hospital room."Vincent, you're back."Hannah moved closer and reached for his arm. But he abruptly sidestepped her with an icy gaze. The look in his eyes made her uneasy."Why are you looking at me like that…?""Did you get someone to make that call back then?"Vincent's voice was hoarse, as though sandpaper had scraped it raw. Every word

Vincent froze in place. After a long moment, he suddenly laughed."How could that be? Selena can't be dead. The prophetic call said she'd cling to me and Hannah like a curse we could never shake."However, his confidence vanished the moment he saw my body.Edith looked at him coldly."I shouldn't have brought you here to disturb her peace, but I couldn't let you slander her even in death."Vincent stared intently at the arm protruding from beneath the white sheet. There was a scar on it. I had gotten it when I once shielded him from scalding soup.Having kissed that scar countless times before, he could not possibly mistake it.He suddenly swayed, and all the color drained from his face.I watched silently as he staggered forward and took my hand, which had long since gone cold."Lena?" He forced a smile and called my name softly."Come on, get up. I'm here to take you home."Those few simple words seemed to turn back time. They took me to the days when we were young. Vince

Vincent rushed to the location Riley had given him.He saw the words scratched into the tiny wooden marker with a fingernail. Right then, he was shaken to the core.[Here Lies Asher Jarrell, Beloved Son of Selena Jarrell.]After a long moment, he finally gritted his teeth and spoke in a hoarse voice. "That's impossible. Back then, I specifically instructed the hospital to take good care of Lena and Asher. Besides, I made sure she had a considerable sum of money to fall back on. "How could anything have happened to Asher?"Hannah stared at the grave marker, and a brief glimmer of delight crossed her eyes before she feigned concern."Vincent, Lena can hate us all she wants, but Asher was innocent. Would she really stand by and let her own child die just to make us feel guilty?"Vincent clenched his fists at her words. But the next moment, he shot to his feet."I don't believe she could've done that to Asher. I'm going to hear it from her myself."As he moved, my ghostly form wa

For a moment, everything fell silent.Vincent finally registered what he had heard when his phone slipped from his hand. His eyes burned with fury as his gaze fell on my sprawled body on the ground."Selena Jarrell, this is absurd! You can be spiteful toward me all you want, but how could you joke about Asher like this? Do you have no sense of responsibility as a mother?"Then, something seemed to occur to him, and he snorted."You think hiding Asher will keep me from finding him? Get up right now, or else, I'll never let you see him again."Vincent expected me to struggle to my feet the moment he mentioned Asher. He expected me to swallow my pride, clutch his sleeve, and beg him as I had ten years ago. That was when he was about to send me and Asher away to that deserted island.Perhaps he thought I would be just as sharp and defiant as I had been before, when I would flash him a mocking smile.Yet, no matter how fiercely he raged, I remained motionless on the ground. When I

Vincent did not understand my sign language, but he could tell where I was pointing. His expression softened slightly, and for once, he spoke to me gently. "Don't worry. I won't send you back there. Once we pick Asher up, we'll all go home. Everything will be better, then."I could barely make out what he was saying anymore. All I could tell was that he shook his head.I remembered reading in a book that a person's senses would gradually fade as they neared the end of their life. The ringing in my ears had grown deafening, and I realized that I no longer had the strength to dive into the sea again. But I still had not saved enough money to bring Asher's remains home. After thinking it over, I reached into my clothes with trembling hands and pulled something out."Take this and exchange it for money. Will that be enough?" I signed. This time, Vincent seemed to understand me. Shock flashed across his face before his expression darkened."Don't be ridiculous. You used to treasure
