Chapter 2

Author: Yulansa
I had come back to assess the area before submitting my final investment report.

If my firm was going to invest here, I wanted the money to make a real difference.

I wanted local students, especially those from struggling families, to have better opportunities.

The town already valued education. It just lacked the money to support it.

But every new insult in the group chat made me question whether these people deserved my help.

Rachel handed me a cup of coffee.

She didn't say much, but I knew what she meant.

Ignore them. Stick to the plan. Don't let a bunch of bitter people ruin something good.

My eyes stung, but I managed a smile and nodded.

That afternoon, I went to Margaret's home.

When she opened the door to her old apartment, a stale, musty smell greeted me.

She was sitting on a low stool, washing vegetables.

After a long silence, she said, "Clara, just do what you think is right. I trust you."

Margaret had given her whole life to her students.

After everything that had been said about me, she was still willing to stand by me.

I nodded and told her why I'd really come back.

My firm planned to turn the area into a top education hub, and I was leading the project.

I'd even volunteered for the job.

If everything went well, students here would finally have access to modern classrooms and equipment.

Margaret's eyes brightened. "That's wonderful! Let me thank you on behalf of the children!"

I looked at her graying hair and the excitement in her eyes.

She had spent most of her life caring for students. Even now, they were the first thing on her mind.

I smiled and poured her a glass of water. "When the new building is finished, you'll be one of the first teachers invited to see it."

The shabby little apartment suddenly felt warm.

Then I changed the subject. "Has anyone been to see you lately?"

Margaret looked away.

After a sigh, she said, "Emma visited me once. She was trying to sell me her school's tutoring program. When she learned we couldn't afford it, she left right away."

I frowned. "She came empty-handed?"

Margaret gave me a bitter smile. "She brought a few flyers. She left without even taking a sip of water."

My anger grew with every word.

Before I left for New York, my classmates used to bend over backward to impress Margaret.

Emma was the worst of them.

She came by every few days to borrow study guides, acting sweet and calling Margaret her beloved mentor every chance she got.

And every time she left, she took more study materials with her.

Now Margaret was retired and ill, and suddenly none of them had time for her.

Yet they had plenty of time to tear me apart in the group chat.

Margaret had never imagined the students she'd cared for so deeply would grow up to be so selfish.

The moment she retired and could no longer do anything for them, they disappeared.

No calls.

No visits.

Nothing.

I said nothing more.

After dinner, Margaret started clearing the table.

We talked a little longer before I got ready to leave.

Something occurred to me, and I exclaimed, "Oh no! I left the medicine I bought you in the car!"

I wiped my hands. "It's all right. You go upstairs and rest. I'll grab it."

It was nearly dark when I walked out of the apartment building.

I headed toward my car and pulled out my phone to ask Rachel for the contract.

Walking through these familiar streets brought back memories of my childhood.

But as I neared the parking lot, I heard a horrible scraping sound.

Metal against metal.

I quickened my pace.

Someone was dragging something sharp across the passenger door of my Cullinan, carving deep scratches into the paint.

It was Emma.

She stood beside my car with a screwdriver still in her hand. "Why are you acting so proud over your sugar daddy's hand-me-down?" she sneered. "There. Now you'll always have something to remember me by."

Daniel panicked and grabbed my wrist. "Clara, listen to me. This is our only chance to transform education in this town! We've waited years for an opportunity like this. We can't let it slip away!"He grew more agitated with every word. "They are animals. What they did is unforgivable. But the children had nothing to do with it! There are thousands of students in this town. You can't let a few pieces of human garbage ruin the future of education for all of them! That wouldn't be fair!"I shot back, "And what exactly is fair? Was any of this fair to Mrs. Smith? She's lying in the ICU because of them!"Daniel fell silent and let go of my wrist. All the strength seemed to drain out of him. After several seconds, he finally asked, "Then... what do you want?"I held his gaze. "I want nothing more to do with these people."Robert spun around and glared at Julian and Emma. "You heard her! Get over here and beg her to forgive you!"Someone shoved Grace forward. She and another classmate hurrie

No one had expected Daniel and Robert to show up.When I didn't answer, Daniel finally noticed something was wrong. "Oh, right. How is Mrs. Smith?"I collected myself. "She's stable. They're keeping her in the ICU for observation."Daniel pressed a hand to his chest. "Thank goodness. Thank goodness."Then he returned to the reason he'd come. "Is there anything you need from me for the new academic building and the private school funding? The entire district will give this project our full support."Daniel grew more excited as he spoke.Emma and the others, however, stood frozen. They stared at one another in shock.Grace was the first to find her voice. "Mr. Foster, what did you just say? Isn't she some rich man's side piece in the city? What donation? What funding?"Daniel's face darkened. "Nonsense! Clara is a senior partner at one of the country's leading venture capital firms. She manages billions of dollars in investment funds!""What?!" Grace shrieked so loudly my ears rang. "A s

Everyone stopped when they heard me say I was going to settle the score.Grace was the first to turn around and size me up. "Settle what? You're the one who caused all this, and now you want to blame us?"Julian made a show of trying to reason with me. "Clara, don't do anything stupid. Mrs. Smith pulled through. We should be happy about that. Why keep dragging this out and making everyone miserable?"I stared at them coldly. These people could twist anything until they were somehow the victims. My silence only made Emma bolder. "Look at her face. You'd think we owed her millions. Maybe that fall really did knock something loose in her head."Several women hid behind the others, trying not to laugh.Grace joined in. "I bet she's faking half of this. She just wants to squeeze some money out of Emma. Guess she couldn't make enough selling herself in the city, so she came home to scam us instead."Encouraged by Grace, Emma straightened up. "Let me make one thing clear. You're not getting a

Theodore asked me a few quick questions over the phone, then said, "Save everything. Don't delete a thing. My team and I are on our way."I ended the call and stared blankly at the red light above the ER doors. It burned into my eyes. Then I heard Peter Smith, Margaret's husband, shout from behind me, "Margaret!"I spun around.Peter was stumbling toward me with a neighbor holding him up. His whole body was shaking. His voice cracked as he asked, "What happened? Weren't you just going to get Margaret's medicine? How did she end up in the ER?"I hurried over and took his arm. "Mr. Smith, please sit down. I'll tell you everything."I told him everything—from Emma keying my car and shoving me to Julian shoving Margaret when she rushed over to help.Peter's lips trembled. "How could they do that to her? Margaret spent her whole life caring about those kids. She never even raised her voice at them."I squeezed his hand, but I had no idea what to say.Just then, the elevator doors opened.Em

Blood kept pouring from the wound even as I pressed my hand against it.Emma and the others stood frozen.None of them had expected one shove to leave me bleeding like this.My head spun, and my vision faded in and out.I pulled out my phone to call an ambulance.Emma thought I was calling the police. She rushed over, grabbed the phone from my hand, and yelled, "You want to call the police? Not a chance!"Even Julian thought she'd gone too far. He tugged at her sleeve. "That's enough. Look at her face. We should take her to the hospital before this gets worse."Emma whirled around and glared at him. "What are you so worried about? It's just a cut. She's not going to die. She's obviously playing it up so she can make a scene and milk us for money!"Julian wanted to argue, but Emma shut him down with a glare. "Shut up and stay out of it!"Julian backed off without another word.I was barely conscious by then.Their faces blurred in front of me.My knees gave out, and I collapsed.Just be

I froze for a second, then rushed over. "Emma! What the hell are you doing to my car?"She clearly hadn't expected me to catch her.Panic flashed across her face, her hand still frozen in midair. After a brief pause, she stammered, "Well, you parked over the line."She even kicked the white line on the ground. "See? You're blocking a public walkway. You took up too much space."I looked her straight in the eye. "Oh! Didn't you tell me this was a reserved parking spot for the school?"You said you'd only let me park here earlier as a favor."I stared her down. "How can there be a reserved parking spot on a public street? The lines are clearly marked. You can't just key someone's car because you feel like it."Emma stuffed the screwdriver into her purse. "Whatever. There's no talking to you."She turned and walked toward the school gates.I caught up with her just as several of our former classmates came over. They looked uncomfortable when they saw me."Well, look who's here. Clara.""W
