Chapter 1

Author: Yulansa
Two nights earlier, at ten o'clock, my former homeroom teacher, Margaret Smith, called me.

She could barely contain her excitement. "Clara, our school's centennial celebration is next week. Could you come back for a visit?"

That same night, I asked my assistant, Rachel Moore, to arrange the trip.

Margaret told me the town was short on funds and that many local schools were badly outdated.

The teachers were doing their best, but much of the equipment was falling apart.

Margaret had suffered from back problems for years after spending her whole life working tirelessly for her students.

With nowhere else to turn, she asked for help in the alumni group chat, "Would any alumni be willing to help us buy new equipment? All I want is to give these kids a better environment to learn."

I told Rachel I'd pay for the entire science building and all its equipment. But I wanted to announce it at the celebration.

Then Emma suddenly replied in the group chat, "Mrs. Smith, I may only be the admissions director at a private school, but I can donate a hundred dollars. Don't worry. I'm happy to support our alma mater."

Then she tagged me. "Oh, Clara, I hear you're doing well in the big city. Why don't you chip in? Or are things going so badly that you can't even spare a hundred dollars?"

The group went silent.

Everyone was waiting to see how I'd respond.

A chill ran through me as I stared at the screen.

Margaret quickly came to my defense. "Enough. Don't guilt-trip your classmate. I'll be happy just to see Clara again."

I read her message but didn't reply.

The investment firm where I worked had just gone public on the Nasdaq, and my stock options alone were worth enough to buy ten towns like this one.

But I said nothing about it.

Once I got back, I spent my days going through the local schools' financial reports.

I worked from morning until night and barely slept.

Meanwhile, the alumni group chat buzzed nonstop.

Then Emma dropped another message: "Do you all know where Clara got that car? She's a homewrecker back in New York and the wife beat her so badly she had to crawl back to the town."

That was all it took. The whole group came alive.

Julian Reed, our former student council president, responded first, "Seriously? Wasn't she a good student back then?"

Emma sent a vomiting emoji. "People aren't always who they seem to be. She couldn't make it there, caught some filthy disease, and ran back to the town to hide."

Julian quickly joined in. "Well, there you are. I knew it. I was jealous when she got into college in New York. Turns out she went there to sell herself. What a disgrace to our class."

Grace Parker, our former cheerleader captain, jumped in too. "Emma is the one who made something of herself. She's an admissions director now. I'm glad you exposed her. Otherwise, Clara might have fooled us."

Emma kept going. "You should have seen her showing off in that beat-up car like she was loaded. But the second I asked to borrow it for my wedding, she panicked. She was probably terrified I'd scratch it and she'd have to explain it to her sugar daddy."

More messages flooded the chat.

I didn't respond to any of them.

No one knew I had joined the group with another phone number the month before.

I'd only joined because I wanted to see how everyone was doing.

Then Julian started mocking me. "She used to be the smartest one in our class. Now she's sleeping with some married guy. Guess all that studying didn't get her very far."

He even tagged Margaret: "Mrs. Smith, your favorite student has become a disgrace. Someone like her has no place at tomorrow's centennial celebration."

Margaret replied, "I know what kind of person Clara is, and I trust her."

Emma immediately fired back, "Mrs. Smith, you're too trusting. Why are you still defending someone like her? She's only going to drag our school's name through the mud!"

Soon, everyone was piling on.

The group chat had turned into a public shaming session.

I sat in my hotel suite while Rachel quietly sorted through documents beside me.

She barely dared to make a sound.

I scrolled through the chat from beginning to end.

Every insult. Every accusation. Every lie.

Daniel panicked and grabbed my wrist. "Clara, listen to me. This is our only chance to transform education in this town! We've waited years for an opportunity like this. We can't let it slip away!"He grew more agitated with every word. "They are animals. What they did is unforgivable. But the children had nothing to do with it! There are thousands of students in this town. You can't let a few pieces of human garbage ruin the future of education for all of them! That wouldn't be fair!"I shot back, "And what exactly is fair? Was any of this fair to Mrs. Smith? She's lying in the ICU because of them!"Daniel fell silent and let go of my wrist. All the strength seemed to drain out of him. After several seconds, he finally asked, "Then... what do you want?"I held his gaze. "I want nothing more to do with these people."Robert spun around and glared at Julian and Emma. "You heard her! Get over here and beg her to forgive you!"Someone shoved Grace forward. She and another classmate hurrie

No one had expected Daniel and Robert to show up.When I didn't answer, Daniel finally noticed something was wrong. "Oh, right. How is Mrs. Smith?"I collected myself. "She's stable. They're keeping her in the ICU for observation."Daniel pressed a hand to his chest. "Thank goodness. Thank goodness."Then he returned to the reason he'd come. "Is there anything you need from me for the new academic building and the private school funding? The entire district will give this project our full support."Daniel grew more excited as he spoke.Emma and the others, however, stood frozen. They stared at one another in shock.Grace was the first to find her voice. "Mr. Foster, what did you just say? Isn't she some rich man's side piece in the city? What donation? What funding?"Daniel's face darkened. "Nonsense! Clara is a senior partner at one of the country's leading venture capital firms. She manages billions of dollars in investment funds!""What?!" Grace shrieked so loudly my ears rang. "A s

Everyone stopped when they heard me say I was going to settle the score.Grace was the first to turn around and size me up. "Settle what? You're the one who caused all this, and now you want to blame us?"Julian made a show of trying to reason with me. "Clara, don't do anything stupid. Mrs. Smith pulled through. We should be happy about that. Why keep dragging this out and making everyone miserable?"I stared at them coldly. These people could twist anything until they were somehow the victims. My silence only made Emma bolder. "Look at her face. You'd think we owed her millions. Maybe that fall really did knock something loose in her head."Several women hid behind the others, trying not to laugh.Grace joined in. "I bet she's faking half of this. She just wants to squeeze some money out of Emma. Guess she couldn't make enough selling herself in the city, so she came home to scam us instead."Encouraged by Grace, Emma straightened up. "Let me make one thing clear. You're not getting a

Theodore asked me a few quick questions over the phone, then said, "Save everything. Don't delete a thing. My team and I are on our way."I ended the call and stared blankly at the red light above the ER doors. It burned into my eyes. Then I heard Peter Smith, Margaret's husband, shout from behind me, "Margaret!"I spun around.Peter was stumbling toward me with a neighbor holding him up. His whole body was shaking. His voice cracked as he asked, "What happened? Weren't you just going to get Margaret's medicine? How did she end up in the ER?"I hurried over and took his arm. "Mr. Smith, please sit down. I'll tell you everything."I told him everything—from Emma keying my car and shoving me to Julian shoving Margaret when she rushed over to help.Peter's lips trembled. "How could they do that to her? Margaret spent her whole life caring about those kids. She never even raised her voice at them."I squeezed his hand, but I had no idea what to say.Just then, the elevator doors opened.Em

Blood kept pouring from the wound even as I pressed my hand against it.Emma and the others stood frozen.None of them had expected one shove to leave me bleeding like this.My head spun, and my vision faded in and out.I pulled out my phone to call an ambulance.Emma thought I was calling the police. She rushed over, grabbed the phone from my hand, and yelled, "You want to call the police? Not a chance!"Even Julian thought she'd gone too far. He tugged at her sleeve. "That's enough. Look at her face. We should take her to the hospital before this gets worse."Emma whirled around and glared at him. "What are you so worried about? It's just a cut. She's not going to die. She's obviously playing it up so she can make a scene and milk us for money!"Julian wanted to argue, but Emma shut him down with a glare. "Shut up and stay out of it!"Julian backed off without another word.I was barely conscious by then.Their faces blurred in front of me.My knees gave out, and I collapsed.Just be

I froze for a second, then rushed over. "Emma! What the hell are you doing to my car?"She clearly hadn't expected me to catch her.Panic flashed across her face, her hand still frozen in midair. After a brief pause, she stammered, "Well, you parked over the line."She even kicked the white line on the ground. "See? You're blocking a public walkway. You took up too much space."I looked her straight in the eye. "Oh! Didn't you tell me this was a reserved parking spot for the school?"You said you'd only let me park here earlier as a favor."I stared her down. "How can there be a reserved parking spot on a public street? The lines are clearly marked. You can't just key someone's car because you feel like it."Emma stuffed the screwdriver into her purse. "Whatever. There's no talking to you."She turned and walked toward the school gates.I caught up with her just as several of our former classmates came over. They looked uncomfortable when they saw me."Well, look who's here. Clara.""W
