Ember's POV

The note was shorter than the first one.

Two sentences. Printed this time, not handwritten — the kind of text that came from a printer or a typewriter, uniform and deliberately unidentifiable. No slant, no pressure pattern, no individual hand behind it.

*We know there are still some of you. We will flush you out.*

I read it twice.

Then I read it a third time because the second time had not settled it and I was hoping the third would.

It did not.

*We.* Not I — we. Multiple people. A

  • My Hockey Alpha Deadly Secret    Chapter 153

Ember's POVKnox was watching me.I could feel it without looking at him — the specific quality of attention he had when something had registered and he was deciding whether to press it. I kept my eyes on the phone for a moment longer than necessary, giving myself the time it took to arrange my face into something that did not give away what was on the screen. Then I looked up."Who was that?" he said."Nothing important," I said. "Someone from my course about a submission."He held my gaze. The thing about Knox was that he had excellent instincts and he knew when something did not line up and he did not always announce that he knew. He had learned — or had always known — that announcing it immediately was not always the most useful response. Sometimes he just held the information and watched. He was doing that now.I looked at him steadily."Okay," he said. Just that. Not pressing it, not flagging that he did not believe it, just accepting the version I had given him and letting it s

  • My Hockey Alpha Deadly Secret    Chapter 152

Ember's POVKnox looked at the window for a long moment after he said it.The wolf would know before the person did.I sat with that and watched his face and did not push the silence anywhere. There was something in how he was holding himself — the set of his shoulders, the particular quality of the stillness — that told me the memory was present in the room with us, that the priest and his father and the night when he was twelve were right there underneath the surface of everything he had just said."You do not have to talk about it more," I said.He looked at me."I pushed," I said. "I asked you to tell me and you told me and I am glad you did. But I pushed and I can see that it is — I can see that it costs something." I held his gaze. "I am sorry for making you go back to it.""You did not make me do anything," he said."I asked.""I chose to answer," he said. "That is different." He looked at his hands briefly. "You asked because you deserved to understand and you were right to as

Ember's POV"What about the curse?" I said.Knox looked at me."The not sleeping with the same person twice," I said. "Is that part of the wolf blood? Is that something I have as well?"He shook his head. "No," he said. "That is not wolf blood. That has nothing to do with what you are." He held my gaze. "That is specifically mine. A different thing entirely.""Tell me," I said.He was quiet for a moment. Not the managing quiet — not the kind where he was deciding how much I could handle. The kind where something lived that was not easy to bring out and he was finding the beginning of it.I waited."I was twelve," he said.I kept my eyes on him."My father had enemies," he said. "That is not unusual for an alpha — the position creates them, the decisions you have to make to hold a pack together create them. Most enemies were manageable. This one was not." He looked at the window. "A woman. She had been connected to the pack years before, before my father took leadership. When he took o

  • My Hockey Alpha Deadly Secret    Chapter 150

Ember's POVIt happened without happening. That was the only way I could describe it afterward — not a moment of effort, not a sensation of exertion, just my hands on the base of the wardrobe and then the wardrobe was not on the floor anymore. It came up.Both feet, clean off the floorboards, the same way Knox had done it except that I kept going — past where he had lifted it, higher, the base of it a foot off the ground and then more, and it was not heavy. That was the part my brain could not process. It was not heavy. It was not light either — I could feel the mass of it, the reality of the thing in my hands, but the mass was not the obstacle it should have been. My hands simply held it and my arms simply held it and the wardrobe was in the air.I held it there.I looked at Knox over the top of it.He was on his feet. His arms were folded and his expression had done something I had not seen it do before — open, genuinely and completely open, the look of someone watching something th

Ember's POV"Your wolf is activating," Knox said.I looked at my hand again. The one that had sent him sideways."The sharp senses," he said. "The sounds being too loud, the smells, the strength coming in without warning — all of it is the same process. Your wolf is not separate from you. It is you, a layer of you that has been there since you were born and has been waiting." He held my gaze. "The push was not an accident. It was the wolf responding to a perceived threat before your human instincts had a chance to overrule it.""You reaching for my phone is not a threat," I said."Your wolf did not know that," he said. "Your wolf knew someone was reaching for something and it moved." He paused. "That is going to happen more as it settles in. Reactions before decisions. Strength before intention."I looked at my hand.I thought about the desk. The first time, in my room alone — the drawer, reaching for it without thinking, the whole desk sliding a foot across the floor. I had told myse

Ember's POVKnox noticed.I had known he would notice. He noticed everything — it was one of the things I had learned about him over the months, the specific attentiveness he had to the people around him, the way nothing small moved in his peripheral vision without registering."Who was that?" he said."My dad," I said. "Just checking in." I said it smoothly, the way I said things when I had decided on a version and was committing to it. "I will reply later. I am not in the mood."Knox looked at me.Then he looked at the phone face down on the mattress."Okay," he said. He did not sound entirely convinced. But he went back to what he had been saying — something about the project timeline — and I breathed and kept my hand near the phone without touching it.Two minutes passed.Three.Then Knox, mid-sentence, reached out toward the phone. Not aggressive — the casual reach of someone going to check something, the movement of a person in a small shared space who has decided to see rather

Ember's POVReeve stayed close but gave us space, the way Knox did when I needed room — standing near enough to be useful, far enough not to crowd. Ember's POVTraining had become the fixed point of my day.Everything else moved around it — classes, meals, texts from Knox, the low-level watchfulness I had been carrying since the note under his door. But six o'clock, James's room, the tea and the biscuit and the quiet work of learning to manage

Ember's POVKnox showed me the note the next morning. He came to my room before breakfast, which he did not usually do, and I knew from the fact that he was there before eight that whatever he had to show me was not something he wanted to carry through a full day without telling me first.I opened

Knox had watched all of it happen, stepped in, walked me home, and now here h
