Chapter 2

Author: You to You
The half-full glass of water Gabrielle had left on the table was still warm.

Just then, my phone rang. My friend, Harry Westman, called. "Hey, Liam. Did your wife go to Cloudwater Leisure Club? I just saw her there with some guy. I think I've seen him somewhere before…

"Wasn't he the swimmer called Caleb Fisher? Honestly, the way those two were together, they didn't look like ordinary friends to me."

I hung up and drove to Cloudwater. I spotted Gabrielle's car outside the leisure club, but I didn't go in. I simply sat in my car, staring at the entrance.

One hour passed, then two.

At 10:00 pm, Gabrielle finally walked out, side by side with a man. He was tall, with broad shoulders, and wore a simple T-shirt that showcased his toned arms—the unmistakable build of an athlete.

That was Caleb.

Gabrielle looked incredibly happy beside him, smiling in a way I hadn't seen in all three years of our marriage. She tilted her head up to look at him, her eyes bright.

Caleb said something to her, then ruffled her hair. The gesture was effortless. Not only did she not pull away, but she even reached up and straightened his collar.

At that moment, they looked like a real couple while I was the clown hiding in the shadows, stalking them. I had always believed we were everything to each other, but it turned out I was nothing more than a reserve.

I started the car and drove away quietly. When I got home, I deleted the short video and my account. I sat in the dark and waited for Gabrielle to come home.

At midnight, the door opened. She walked in, smelling of hot spring water and alcohol. She jumped when she saw me sitting on the couch.

"Why didn't you turn on the lights?" she complained, switching on the living room lights. "You scared the hell out of me."

"Did you have fun?" I asked.

Her expression went unnatural. "It was… fine. It was just a class reunion. How fun can it be? We drank, talked, and sang karaoke."

She kept avoiding my eyes as she spoke.

I stood up and walked over to her. "Really? I thought you went to a hot spring."

The smell of alcohol on Gabrielle was even stronger up close.

"They wanted to go sing afterward, so we never got around to it," she said, still lying.

"Gabrielle, Caleb touched your hair."

She jerked her head up, her eyes widening. "You… You actually followed me! Liam, you're freaking me out!"

"I didn't follow you."

I took out my phone and tapped open one of my chat boxes. It was with Harry's wife, who was an account manager at Cloudwater.

"Could you pull up the security footage from the entrance to the VIP area tonight?" I texted her.

A few minutes later, she sent me a video. I held my phone up in front of Gabrielle.

In the video, Caleb ran his fingers through her hair while she rose onto her toes to straighten his collar. The interaction was so intimate that they didn't even seem to care who might be watching.

"My friend saw you two together. This is the footage."

Gabrielle's face turned pale. She stared at the video, lips quivering, but nothing came out.

"No hot spring? Just karaoke? Gabrielle, look me in the eye and tell me exactly what you two did today."

She flipped out. "We didn't do anything! We'd both had too much to drink. He just helped me when I stumbled. What's wrong with that? Do you really have to look at us through that filthy mind of yours?

"We're championship partners! You don't know what we had!"

I laughed. "I don't? You're right. I don't. Let me ask you something I do know. Did you accept the bracelet he bought you?"

The police held Caleb in place.Gabrielle lunged at him like a madwoman, clawing and hitting him. "You freaking liar! Give me my money back!"The scene descended into chaos. Camera flashes went off nonstop, capturing every second of this absurd debacle. The next day, every major outlet ran the same story."Former Swimming Champion and Old Flame Conspire to Defraud Husband of Capital".Gabrielle and Caleb were completely disgraced. He was convicted of fraud and embezzlement and sentenced to prison after the charges were combined. As the company's legal representative and an accomplice, Gabrielle avoided prison because I submitted a statement asking for leniency. Still, she was left with a massive debt. The court ordered them to repay the 375,000 dollars I had invested.Caleb had nothing left, so naturally, the entire debt fell on Gabrielle. Her house was auctioned off, and her car was repossessed. Gabrielle believed everything Caleb did was for the sake of their shared dream and future glory. In just two weeks, he had drained the remaining 300,000 dollars with one excuse after another. Every penny had been transferred to his personal offshore account.Meanwhile, I didn't do a thing. I was like a patient hunter, quietly watching my prey walk deeper and deeper into the trap.It wasn't until Joe informed me all the money had been transferred away and the evidence chain was complete that I knew it was time to reel in the net. Then came the swimming club's scheduled grand opening. The venue had been lavishly decorated.Reporters, guests, and plenty of potential clients had come because of the club's reputation.Caleb and Gabrielle stood at the entrance in formal attire, greeting guests with smiles they couldn't hide. They looked as if they had already won.As the club's biggest investor, I had naturally been invited, too. By the time I arrived, the opening ceremony was about t

"The moment he touches the money, it's misappropriation of company funds. The amount is large enough to get him into serious trouble," Joe concluded."Good."I hung up. In my rearview mirror, I watched Caleb excitedly make a phone call. He was probably calling Gabrielle to give her the good news.I started the car, leaving behind the couple who would soon meet their demise.…Joe's plan went smoothly. He had someone forge a letter of intent stamped with an official red seal, then found a retired government official to play the role of "Mr. Langford from the National Sports Authority".He and Caleb met at an upscale cafe. Mr. Langford put on an impressive bureaucratic act and made it clear that the club would need to meet extremely high standards when it came to its facilities. He also hinted that competition for the program was fierce and that they welcomed additional "voluntary donations".Caleb understood immediately. After seeing Mr. Langford off, he went straight to Gabr

Caleb's expression turned somewhat uneasy. "Don't worry. Every penny is being spent where it matters."He held out a document. "Here's our renovation schedule and budget. Take a look."I didn't take it. "I'm not here to look at spreadsheets. I'm here to see someone."I glanced around, but didn't see Gabrielle. "Where's Gabrielle?""Oh, Gabs went to meet Mr. Henderson," Caleb answered. "He's the former national team coach we brought on as a special consultant. He's incredibly difficult to get a meeting with, so Gabs went to discuss the details of our partnership herself."He had an answer for everything.I nodded. "She's working hard."I pretended to wander around the facility, looking here and there, running my hand over things as I went. "Mr. Fisher, your setup does look pretty good, but I think it could be better."Caleb immediately came. "What do you have in mind, Mr. Moore?""Your reputations as two former champions can only bring in so many clients," I said. "If you want

I found it all ironic, especially when the legal representative was Gabrielle.Joe and I signed the investment agreement with Gabrielle and Caleb.Joe had drafted every clause without a single loophole. Financial oversight, regular audits, strict accounting requirements—nothing had been left out.Clearly, Caleb didn't take any of it seriously. He probably thought that as long as Gabrielle was the legal representative and I was her husband, none of those clauses would ever matter. After we signed, Caleb extended his hand enthusiastically. "Mr. Moore, I'm looking forward to working with you. From now on, we're family."I shook his hand, then let go immediately. "Mr. Fisher, I only care about results. Don't disappoint me."Caleb's smile stiffened a little. Gabrielle quickly stepped in to smooth things over."Okay, okay. We're all doing this for the company. Liam, why don't we have dinner tonight? We should celebrate the company launch."I turned her down. "No, thanks. I have somet

Instead of going to work, I went to meet my old college classmate, Joe Eastman. He was now a highly respected lawyer who specialized in financial and economic cases. At the cafe, I told him everything from beginning to end, including Gabrielle and Caleb's history and the investment plan I had proposed last night. After listening, Joe pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose. "Liam, you're inviting trouble."I shook my head. "No, I'm inviting them in so that I can fix the trouble."His expression shifted. "What are you planning?""I want to destroy them."I pulled a USB drive out of my bag. "This is a recording of my conversation with Gabrielle last night. It has everything Caleb said on the phone."Can this be used as evidence of her infidelity and that the two of them were conspiring to transfer the marital assets?"Joe took the USB drive and plugged it into his laptop. He put on his earphones and listened to the recordings carefully. When he took them off, his expression
