Chapter 3

Author: You to You
Gabrielle instinctively checked her wrist. It was bare. That gesture alone told me everything.

"How did you know?"

"Take a guess."

I didn't tell her the answer, though. The truth was, I found an empty jewelry box in her car's storage. Before heading out to meet Caleb, she had deliberately hidden the bracelet away, for fear of letting me know.

Gabrielle's face was washed white. "So what? It was just a bracelet, a present from an old friend. Do you have to get all dramatic?"

"I don't know. Do I?"

I slowly walked toward her. "Gabrielle, you wear the clothes I bought you and drove the car I paid for to meet up with your ex-boyfriend. He bought you a bracelet, and you happily accepted it.

"What about me? Did you remember what happened on my birthday last month?"

My eyes never left hers. Memories of that day resurfaced. I had excitedly booked a restaurant that evening, only to come home with the necklace she had eyed for the longest time and find her on the couch.

I had called her earlier that day, and she told me she had been at home all day because she had been feeling under the weather.

"I believed you then. I canceled all the bookings and came home to look after you," I said. "But when I came home, I found your delivery order in the trash—spicy buffalo wings, your favorite.

"It came from the very restaurant you never let me try because, apparently, it was too unhealthy for me."

I made my words count, though my voice was shaking. "You weren't feeling under the weather, Gabrielle. You were just too lazy to care, even if it was my birthday."

My words prickled Gabrielle's heart like thorns. Her eyes reddened.

"Liam, do you have to go so far and be so mean? All I did was forget—"

I cut her off. "You did forget because you don't love me. You only married me because you needed a safe space to heal from your heartbreak with Caleb. You're not introverted or lazy.

"You'd simply spent all your energy and passion for life on him in the past. Meanwhile, I'm nothing more than a landlord who happens to provide you three meals a day."

I paused. "You know what? No—at least a landlord gets paid. What have I gotten in return? A wife who can't remember my birthday, or a wife who still can't get over her ex?"

The living room became eerily silent.

Tears rolled down Gabrielle's face. "No, Liam… It's not like that at all…"

She tried to take my hand, but I dodged her. "Don't touch me. It feels dirty."

She froze. This was the first time I had spoken so harshly to her. Her tears spilled even faster. "I swear there's nothing between Caleb and me. It's all in the past—"

I scoffed. "Is it, though? As soon as he came back, you changed. The past? Stop lying to yourself, Gabrielle."

Just then, Gabrielle's phone rang. She scrambled to take out her phone from her bag. The screen flashed with Caleb's name.

She froze. The ringtone echoed through the quiet living room like a blaring alarm. Conflicted, she could neither answer nor decline the call.

I looked at her. "Go on. Answer it. Don't keep your concerned old friend waiting."

By then, Gabrielle had bitten her lip so hard that it had turned pale. In the end, she still answered the call and put him on speaker.

Caleb chuckled on the other line. "Hey, Gabs. Have you arrived home? Your husband isn't ruffled or anything, is he? If he's giving you a hard time, tell me. I'm not one to sit around and let you take it, you know?"

His tone was full of provocation, as if he were the one who wore the pants in this relationship.

The police held Caleb in place.Gabrielle lunged at him like a madwoman, clawing and hitting him. "You freaking liar! Give me my money back!"The scene descended into chaos. Camera flashes went off nonstop, capturing every second of this absurd debacle. The next day, every major outlet ran the same story."Former Swimming Champion and Old Flame Conspire to Defraud Husband of Capital".Gabrielle and Caleb were completely disgraced. Still, she was left with a massive debt. The court ordered them to repay the 375,000 dollars I had invested.Caleb had nothing left, so naturally, the entire debt fell on Gabrielle. Her house was auctioned off, and her car was repossessed. Gabrielle believed everything Caleb did was for the sake of their shared dream and future glory. In just two weeks, he had drained the remaining 300,000 dollars with one excuse after another. Every penny had been transferred to his personal offshore account.Meanwhile, I didn't do a thing. I was like a patient hunter, quietly watching my prey walk deeper and deeper into the trap.It wasn't until Joe informed me all the money had been transferred away and the evidence chain was complete that I knew it was time to reel in the net. Then came the swimming club's scheduled grand opening. The venue had been lavishly decorated.Reporters, guests, and plenty of potential clients had come because of the club's reputation.Caleb and Gabrielle stood at the entrance in formal attire, greeting guests with smiles they couldn't hide. They looked as if they had already won.As the club's biggest investor, I had naturally been invited, too. By the time I arrived, the opening ceremony was about t

"The moment he touches the money, it's misappropriation of company funds. The amount is large enough to get him into serious trouble," Joe concluded."Good."I hung up. In my rearview mirror, I watched Caleb excitedly make a phone call. He was probably calling Gabrielle to give her the good news.I started the car, leaving behind the couple who would soon meet their demise.…Joe's plan went smoothly. He had someone forge a letter of intent stamped with an official red seal, then found a retired government official to play the role of "Mr. Langford from the National Sports Authority".He and Caleb met at an upscale cafe. Mr. Langford put on an impressive bureaucratic act and made it clear that the club would need to meet extremely high standards when it came to its facilities. He also hinted that competition for the program was fierce and that they welcomed additional "voluntary donations".Caleb understood immediately. After seeing Mr. Langford off, he went straight to Gabr

Caleb's expression turned somewhat uneasy. "Don't worry. Every penny is being spent where it matters."He held out a document. "Here's our renovation schedule and budget. Take a look."I didn't take it. "I'm not here to look at spreadsheets. I'm here to see someone."I glanced around, but didn't see Gabrielle. "Where's Gabrielle?""Oh, Gabs went to meet Mr. Henderson," Caleb answered. "He's the former national team coach we brought on as a special consultant. He's incredibly difficult to get a meeting with, so Gabs went to discuss the details of our partnership herself."He had an answer for everything.I nodded. "She's working hard."I pretended to wander around the facility, looking here and there, running my hand over things as I went. "Mr. Fisher, your setup does look pretty good, but I think it could be better."Caleb immediately came. "What do you have in mind, Mr. Moore?""Your reputations as two former champions can only bring in so many clients," I said. "If you want

I found it all ironic, especially when the legal representative was Gabrielle.Joe and I signed the investment agreement with Gabrielle and Caleb.Joe had drafted every clause without a single loophole. Financial oversight, regular audits, strict accounting requirements—nothing had been left out.Clearly, Caleb didn't take any of it seriously. He probably thought that as long as Gabrielle was the legal representative and I was her husband, none of those clauses would ever matter. After we signed, Caleb extended his hand enthusiastically. "Mr. Moore, I'm looking forward to working with you. From now on, we're family."I shook his hand, then let go immediately. "Mr. Fisher, I only care about results. Don't disappoint me."Caleb's smile stiffened a little. Gabrielle quickly stepped in to smooth things over."Okay, okay. We're all doing this for the company. Liam, why don't we have dinner tonight? We should celebrate the company launch."I turned her down. "No, thanks. I have somet

Instead of going to work, I went to meet my old college classmate, Joe Eastman. He was now a highly respected lawyer who specialized in financial and economic cases. At the cafe, I told him everything from beginning to end, including Gabrielle and Caleb's history and the investment plan I had proposed last night. After listening, Joe pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose. "Liam, you're inviting trouble."I shook my head. "No, I'm inviting them in so that I can fix the trouble."His expression shifted. "What are you planning?""I want to destroy them."I pulled a USB drive out of my bag. "This is a recording of my conversation with Gabrielle last night. It has everything Caleb said on the phone."Can this be used as evidence of her infidelity and that the two of them were conspiring to transfer the marital assets?"Joe took the USB drive and plugged it into his laptop. He put on his earphones and listened to the recordings carefully. When he took them off, his expression
