Chapter 3

Author: Flat Cat
By the time we got back from the church, I was running a fever.

After I told Justin, Karen rummaged through her bag and pulled out a bottle of herbal medicine. "You probably got a little heatstroke. Here, drink this. I made sure to pack it before we left."

The sharp, medicinal stench hit me, and my stomach lurched.

Karen paused, caught off guard.

Justin's voice turned cold. "Zoe, you're a grown woman. Do you really have to act like such a princess?"

I leaned back against the headboard. My head felt heavier by the second, and before I knew it, I drifted into a feverish sleep.

When I woke up, the room was empty.

All I could hear was Justin's promise from our wedding day echoing in my mind. "I swear I'll spend the rest of my life taking care of Zoe. I'll treat her like a princess and protect her, always."

Only now did I understand. A promise was just a promise.

I called the front desk and ordered a bowl of chicken soup. While I waited, I saw Karen's latest post.

Justin was holding an umbrella over her as they strolled along the beach. Bathed in the glow of the setting sun, the two of them looked more like a couple on their honeymoon than we did.

Her caption read, "My son's all grown up. He's finally taking his mom on the vacation she's always deserved."

The comments were already pouring in.

"Karen, you're so lucky."

"Justin's such a devoted son."

"Where's your daughter-in-law? I don't see her anywhere."

Karen replied, "Zoe loves sleeping in. We didn't want to wake her."

I stared at those words.

"We didn't want to wake her."

My fingers slowly tightened around my phone. So, in her version of the story, the fever that had left me bedridden in the hotel room had become nothing more than me sleeping in.

A few minutes later, Justin posted, too. The photo showed him and Karen sitting by the shore, the sunset painting the sky behind them.

The caption was only one sentence that read, "Finally got to see the ocean with her."

I stared at that single word. Her.

He'd used it for me once. Back when we first started dating, he'd taken pictures of me by the river at sunset. The caption had read, "Finally got to watch the sunset with her."

I'd kept a screenshot of that post for the longest time. Only now did I realize that "her" had never belonged to me. It could be anyone.

The chicken soup arrived. I managed a couple of spoonfuls, but the hollow ache in my stomach refused to go away.

Justin and Karen didn't come back until well past midnight, chatting happily about the fireworks they'd watched that evening.

The noise woke me.

Only then did Justin notice I was awake. He rubbed his temples with a weary sigh. "It's Mom's first time traveling, Zoe. I couldn't exactly ruin it for you."

In the middle of the night, Karen called out for him again, saying she was having heart palpitations.

My fever had left me barely conscious. I reached out and caught his sleeve. "Don't go…"

He looked down at me as Karen called from the other bed, "Justin, am I dying?"

Without another word, he pulled his sleeve free from my grasp. "Mom's not feeling well."

He hurried over to her side, checked her blood pressure, poured her a glass of water, and gently rubbed her back.

Meanwhile, I lay shivering with a fever in the other bed. No one looked back at me. Not even once.

Zayne pursued me for two years. There were no grand gestures. Just a hundred small ones.Whenever my stomach acted up, he'd show up outside my door with medicine and a bowl of chicken soup.If I didn't feel like seeing anyone, he'd leave everything hanging from my doorknob and quietly head home ten minutes later. If I texted him after working past midnight saying I wasn't in the mood for supper, he'd claim he'd only bought one portion for himself. Then he'd pull another container out from the bottom of the bag, saying, "I figured you might change your mind."That winter, Zayne and I officially started dating. He wasn't good with romantic words, but he remembered that I didn't drink milk, didn't eat mangoes, was allergic to seafood, and hated it when people made plans for me without asking. The first time he took me to meet his parents, he asked me three times, "If you don't want to go, we won't go. And if my mom says anything that makes you uncomfortable, I'll handle it."Over d

A year later, I transferred back to my hometown.I'd barely stepped out of the train station when someone called after me."Ms. Myle! Wait up!"I turned and saw Zayne Wheeler jogging toward me. He dragged his suitcase with one hand while carrying my laptop bag in the other. His shirt collar was crooked from running. He was the structural engineer on the Sandston project. Even though he was two months younger than me, he always insisted on acting older than he was."Is your place far?" he asked between breaths. "Your mom said she's making beef stew tonight. Should I pick up some fruit on the way?"I sighed, half amused. "My mom was just being polite. You actually took her seriously?"He looked genuinely puzzled. "Of course. Your mom invited me herself. It would've been rude not to come."I spotted Justin as soon as I stepped out of the station. He was standing just beyond the crowd in a black overcoat, looking quieter somehow than I remembered.Zayne noticed him too. "A friend?

After relocating to Sandston, I barely had a moment to breathe. The new project moved at breakneck speed. I was on-site by eight every morning and rarely made it back to my apartment before ten at night. In a way, the heavy workload was a blessing. By the time I crawled into bed each night, I was too exhausted to dwell on everything that had happened. After the divorce papers were served, Justin still refused to sign them. My lawyer said we'd try negotiating first. If that went nowhere, we'd file for divorce in court.Three months later, Karen showed up at my office.I was in a conference room making revisions to a proposal when the receptionist called to say someone was here to see me.When I stepped into the lobby, Karen was sitting on one of the couches. She was impeccably dressed, with a thermal food container resting in her lap."Zoe," she said with a smile. "I made your favorite soup."I glanced at the container before looking back at her. "How did you know I was here?"

The day before I was due to join the IPO team, Justin came back.He was waiting downstairs outside my parents' apartment building with a suitcase beside him. He looked noticeably thinner and more worn out than before.I happened to run into him on my way to take out the trash. The scene felt strangely familiar. Except this time, I was carrying a bag of kitchen scraps, and my hair was tied back in a messy ponytail. I looked nothing like a newlywed bride. The moment Justin saw me, his eyes lit up. "Zoe."I shifted the trash bag to my other hand. "Could you move? The dumpster's behind you."He faltered. There had been a time when I couldn't wait to see him, when I'd greet him with a smile and a dozen things to tell him. Now, I had nothing left to say to him.Justin stepped aside. I tossed the trash into the dumpster and turned to head back inside. He reached out, stopping me."Can we talk?" he asked."Everything I have to say is in the divorce papers.""I'm not here to talk a

The next day, I met with a divorce lawyer. After hearing me out, he explained that the marriage had been so short that dividing our assets would be fairly straightforward. The house belonged to Justin. He'd bought it before we got married. However, I'd paid 180,000 dollars toward the renovation. The honeymoon had cost me another 70,000 dollars. Most of the gifts from the wedding had ended up in Karen's hands. She said she was keeping it safe for us.I pulled out every receipt and bank statement, organizing them one by one. By the end of it, I couldn't help laughing.Getting married had been like taking on a pro bono project for the Hudson family. I drew up the plans. I fronted the money. I swallowed every grievance. And in the end, even our honeymoon had to revolve around Karen. Justin finally called from an unfamiliar number that afternoon.I answered. His voice was hoarse as he called my name, "Zoe."I didn't respond. After a long silence, he asked, "Did you cancel our h

  • My Honeymoon Turned Into His Mommy-Moon   Chapter 5

I landed back home on the fourth day after our wedding. The moment I turned my phone back on, it lit up with a flood of missed calls. They were from Justin, Karen, and several numbers I didn't recognize. I ignored every single one.Wheeling my suitcase behind me, I spotted my dad waiting by the arrivals gate. He was holding up a handwritten cardboard sign that read, "Welcome home, Zoe. Dinner's waiting."My eyes stung, and I almost started crying. His smile faded when he realized I was alone. "Where's Justin?""Still overseas. He's with his mom."A muscle in Dad's jaw twitched. "Weren't you two supposed to be on your honeymoon?""We were."He didn't ask another question and simply took my suitcase from my hand. "Come on. Your mom made soup."Mom called while we were on the drive home. "Did you pick her up?" she asked.Dad switched the call to speaker. "I did. She's lost weight."Mom's voice was filled with concern. "What? It's only been a few days. See? I told you that boy w
