Chapter 2 Confused and perplexed

Autor: Ela Osaretin
Damian was stunned by her behavior. She hadn’t even said goodbye.

Why was it that they had just gotten divorced, yet she didn’t look sad—or even slightly upset?

It felt as if he were the one being left behind, as if his world had been disrupted.

But that was exactly what he had wanted, wasn’t it?

And yet, before he could stop himself, he found his legs moving—he was already rushing out the door after Amelia.Just as he got out of his office, Damian’s cellphone rang out.

Sophia was calling.

“Da…Damian…”

He panicked on hearing how weak her voice sounded.

“What is it, Sophia?!”

“I feel so sick…I don’t know what’s…”

“Hold on, Sophia. I’m on my way.” He let out.

********

As Amelia held onto her car’s handle, her phone rang.

She brought it out from her bag and saw that it was a call from the hospital.

Sighing, she answered.

“Dr A, I’m so sorry for interrupting your busy schedule, but can you please come by the hospital, an important VIP patient is in a lot of pain, we’ve ran several diagnosis but we can’t figure out the cause.”

Amelia grimaced. She knew the calls from the hospital were always very important.

They wouldn’t call if the situation wasn’t critical.

And yes, there was a secret side of hers that many didn’t know of. Of course, they all knew the star doctor, the gifted doctor or doctor A who could provide cure that many doctors couldn’t.

Even some had speculated that she was a man. But Amelia always wore a mask while working most of the time and she had a confidentiality clause with the hospital and her patients who had seen her face.

She was someone who had always wanted to live a low-key life but at the same time, she wanted to use her gift to help people but seeing how that gift of hers brought a lot of fame, and would literally make people lose their minds at the sight of her, she decided to work in secret.

That way, she could still have a normal life.

*********

Once Amelia got to the hospital, she changed into a white coat and sterile mask, and headed for the VIP ward.

Meanwhile, at the VIP ward, Sophia was lying on the bed with Damian by her side, they had just been informed that a female doctor was on her way to examine Sophia.

“Damian, you promised to get me the Gifted doctor, this pain always come and goes and I’m sure the Gifted Doctor can completely make it go away. Why are they sending me a dumb female?!” She snarled.

Damian sighed. “Calm down, Sophia. I had indeed begged them to send the Gifted doctor over but the director said nothing can be promised as the Gifted doctor barely shows up, impromptu. And don’t be a sexist, there are a lot of women in this profession and I think they’re doing great.”

The door opened and Sophia glanced upwards.

It was really a female doctor walking in and she lost faith completely in her ability but she didn’t complain.

She just let the doctor do her thing as she examined her and fixed up a drip bag for her.

Suddenly, the pain started to subside.

The doctor was quiet most of the time and she was on a mask but Sophia felt that she looked oddly familiar.

“Get some rest, you’ll feel better in no time.” The doctor concluded and made to leave.

Sophia was impressed by her and so she let out.

“Thank you so much. But you feel so familiar, have we met before?”

Amelia stared at Sophia and then at Damian.

Slowly, she took off her mask.

Damian and Sophia’s eyes widened, jaws nearly dropping to the floor.

Amelia smirked, both their reactions were absolutely comical.

She hadn’t known that Sophia was the VIP patient but when she found out after reading the patient file, she discovered that she was supposed to treat Sophia but since she was already here, she had to be professional.

She had been able to figure out Sophia’s diagnosis and she knew the cure. But she gave Sophia half the treatment.

Amelia wasn’t a saint and she wouldn’t claim to be. Both Sophia and Damian had done her dirty and if they wanted a permanent cure, they had to earn it.

“What? Why are you here?!” Damian asked, incredulously.

“Isn’t it obvious?” Amelia asked.

Damian shook his head in pure disbelief. He had thought Amelia was just an unskilled and useless woman.

He had thought she had saved his grandpa from getting robbed on purpose four years ago, he also thought she might have staged the robbery and attempted assassination.

He had thought that was her plan to escape poverty and marry into the Wright family.

But he never imagined she could have such a profession. The doctors in this hospital had failed to provide relief for Sophia as they couldn’t figure out what was wrong with her.

But Amelia came and did her thing and Sophia was already feeling better?

“Who are you? Have you been a doctor all this while?”

“Do I owe you an explanation?” Amelia sneered.

“Do you work for the Gifted doctor?”

Damian just couldn’t understand how she was here right now.

It suddenly felt like he didn’t know her at all.

Instead of answering that question, Amelia said to Sophia.

“You need more follow-ups, Miss Hudson, so for now, do your best to avoid any emotional outburst as it will only worsen your condition.” With that, she walked out of the room leaving Damian and Sophia confused and perplexed.

The handsome man raised the cigar to his lips, took a slow, deliberate drag, and then blew the smoke toward the window as if he could somehow make it drift down to caress Amelia’s face. Looks like I've finally tracked you."His lips curved into a dangerous smile, his predatory gaze never leaving Amelia, who had no idea she was being hunted.Inside the underground boxing club, the shouting and cursing grew louder by the second.Amelia stood in the center of the ring. She withdrew her gaze from the upper floors, her brows furrowed. She couldn't see who it was, but she could feel it, someone out there was watching her with pure hostility. She swept a cold glance across the rowdy crowd and said in a frosty tone, "If you don't believe I beat the Boxing King, then step up and try to take me down."Since they couldn't accept what they saw, she'd give them front-row seats to a few more beatdowns, until they had no choice but to believe it.The second she spoke, the nois

The roar of the crowd had become a distant hum, swallowed by the throbbing pain coursing through him.The referee's final count echoed through the underground arena.Amelia had won.The crowd exploded. Cheering, shouting, jumping, strangers hugging strangers. Those who had bet on her were ecstatic. Against all odds, they had struck gold.Carla stood frozen, eyes wide, mouth agape. Like a balloon with all the air punched out, she stared blankly ahead. "I…how… How could this be?" she muttered to herself, unable to accept her defeat in the bet. How could a Boxing King lose to a slender woman? There must be something shady going on!Carla pointed a trembling finger at Amelia, her voice rising to a deranged pitch.“She bribed the Boxing King! That's it! He took a bribe…he let her win! There's no other explanation!"Carla’s voice cut through the ch

Up on the fighting platform, the lights blazed down like spotlights on a stage. The Boxing King had expected gratitude, maybe even begging. Instead, Amelia eyes held nothing but cold contempt, and for a split second, it made him freeze.Something about this woman tugged at his memory, like a half-remembered dream that wouldn't come into focus. Those eyes. They looked down at him as if he were nothing, reminiscent of the mysterious Boxing Queen who had appeared from nowhere and vanished just as quickly, leaving only legends in her wake.As the Boxing King studied Amelia’s lean frame, a crazy thought crept into his mind. Could this woman standing before him actually be the legendary Boxing Queen? The idea hit him like a punch to the gut, but he shook his head violently. No! "Exactly! Even male fighters struggle against him. She's walking into a slaughterhouse."“Unless… wait. Is this rigged? Did someone pay off Boxing King to throw the fight? No way. Too obvious. That's suicide."“Pfft. Forget it. Just another rich fool with more money than sense."“What an idiot. Might as well light that stack on fire. Betting on a walking corpse? Only fools back a loser!"Eugene didn't flinch. "I believe she can beat Boxing King."“Yeah! Me too!" Emily added, her voice steady.Honestly, Emily and Eugene weren't completely sure Amelia would win. But in a place where everyone was waiting to tear Amelia down, they had to be the ones to back her, loud and clear.Eugene turned back to Carla. "What's wrong? Scared to match me now?"Carla and her crew looked stiff. One hundred million? They couldn't scrape that together if they sold everything they owned.“You? You really got that kind of money?" Carla taunted.Eugene stayed cool. "If you're in, I'll bring the cash. If I can't

“Who's the guy?" Kole's voice carried a note of nervous suspicion as he studied the masked man's imposing frame. "Think he's some kind of fighter?"“Doesn't matter." Carla’s voice remained ice-cold and confident. "This is about the bet, not backup muscle. When Amelia gets her ass kicked, she'll still have to honor the bet."Amelia walked ahead and stopped in front of the trio, her lips curved in a subtle smile. The underground boxing arena attracted society's underbelly, criminals, thrill-seekers, and desperate souls, all drawn to the scent of blood and easy money.Amelia had fought tooth and nail to keep Emily away from this dangerous place, but Emily had stubbornly refused to be left behind. The thought of leaving Emily…Unprotected, Emily’s presence terrified Amelia, so she had convinced Eugene to serve as Emily’s bodyguard.“Well, well. Look who decided to show up after all." "Patience." Marcus’ face remained a mask of stone, revealing nothing of his inner calculations. "We just had a public confrontation. Move against her now, and every finger will point straight at us."Jorge's head bobbed with understanding, his confidence returning in full force. "Give me a week, and that woman will vanish without a trace, like she never existed."Their next human trafficking shipment was already scheduled for departure. She would simply become another piece of cargo, bound for foreign shores and a fate worse than death.“Good. But don't get sloppy with the transport," Marcus warned.“Don't worry about me." Jorge's chest swelled with pride. "I've never fucked up a job yet, and I'm not about to start now."*********On the top floor of Roka Restaurant, Viola approached Amelia and Emily, her tone laced with curiosity and warmth.“What happened? What took you so long?"“Nothing at all," Amelia answered with a calm smile.Beside her, Emily’s lips twitched. She tried to keep
