Chapter 4

Author: Briony
When I agreed to sit down, Matteo visibly relaxed.

He even pulled me into his arms like he used to and brushed his lips against my hair. "That's more like it. Stop talking about leaving every five minutes. I don't like hearing it."

Lia's perfume still clung to his shirt collar.

My stomach turned.

The old hourglass I'd been using to keep track of the time stood in the middle of the dining room, its sand almost gone.

It was less than ten minutes to eight.

Matteo had his men release Sofia, but he didn't actually let her leave. The two enforcers still stood behind her. Her right hand hung limp, her wrist clearly dislocated, and there was blood on her neck and at the corner of her mouth.

I couldn't let myself look at her for long.

I was afraid one more glance would make me start a war with the Moretti family on the spot.

Matteo seemed to think I'd finally given in. He peeled a shrimp for me himself and put it on my plate. "Relax, Sofia's not going to die. After dinner, I'll have a doctor treat her."

The words were barely out of his mouth when the roar of rotor blades filled the sky over the estate.

The windows rattled in the downdraft.

Alarms went off outside.

Every Moretti man in the yard raised his gun at the night sky.

Lia went white and instinctively huddled against Matteo. "Is it the collectors? Did they find me here?"

I set down my silverware.

"No.

"They're here for me."

Matteo's eyes snapped to me.

Lia froze for a second, then shrieked, "For you? Elena, you didn't bring the Cassano family here to take me, did you?"

She turned to Matteo, her eyes welling up. "If they're here for her, then let her walk out on her own. Don't let those people onto the estate. Who knows what the Cassano family has planned for the Moretti family?"

Matteo said nothing.

One second.

Two.

Three.

I looked at him and suddenly thought back to the old church five years earlier.

That day, gunfire had raged through the church, from the upper floors all the way down to the basement. I could have escaped alone, but I'd gone back and carried him out.

And now, all he had to do was say, "Let her people in," and Sofia could get the help she needed.

But in the end, he said, "Fine."

He looked at me. "You go out alone. Sofia stays here. I'll have a doctor take care of her."

I laughed.

Matteo seemed to want to explain. "Elena, nobody out there would dare touch you. Lia's different. She doesn't have a family protecting her right now."

I stopped listening.

I walked over to Sofia and pulled one of her arms over my shoulders.

She sucked in a sharp breath of pain. "Forget about me. You go."

"Shut up."

I kept her upright. "We're going home together."

The Moretti men moved to stop us.

I looked at Matteo. "You told me to walk out. You never said I had to leave anyone with you."

His expression shifted.

But in the end, he didn't give the order to shoot.

Step by step, I helped Sofia out of the estate.

The rotors whipped up grass and dust. The Cassano helicopter had landed on the north lawn with its door wide open, and a doctor and four guards were already running toward us.

I didn't look back.

Behind me, Matteo stood on the steps, watching me without moving.

In that moment, something seemed to flash through his mind.

Five years earlier, I'd been the one covered in blood as I carried him out of the church, one step at a time.

Now I was leaving his estate with someone else he'd hurt so badly that she could barely stand.

He finally took two steps after me.

Lia grabbed his arm at once. "Matteo, don't. The Cassano men are all armed, and they're on edge right now."

He stopped.

By then, I'd already boarded the helicopter.

When the medics took Sofia from me, the pain made her pass out. I kept pressure on the gauze. The old bullet wound in my left shoulder had reopened from carrying her the whole way, and blood slowly seeped through my clothes.

The door slid shut.

The helicopter lifted off.

The Moretti estate got smaller and smaller.

After five years, I'd finally left that place for good.

...

After the estate went quiet again, Matteo stood there for a long time.

When he went back into the living room, he spotted a list on the table.

It was the inventory the moving company had left behind.

From clothes, sculptures, books, and jewelry to the old carving knife Elena had used in her studio for five years, every last thing was gone.

Only then did his expression change.

I looked up at Matteo."What else do you want to hear?"He looked back at me. "I want to hear you say it yourself. That we're really over.""Then I'll say it."Everything around us went quiet."The first time our marriage ended was when you tattooed Lia's name over the bullet scar on your chest."Matteo's lips moved."It ended again when you copied the black rose that had been mine alone and gave it to her."It ended a third time when one accusation from her was enough for you to have Sofia pinned down and beaten."And the final time was when the Cassano helicopter landed on your north lawn. You knew Sofia was badly hurt, but you still listened to Lia and sent me out there alone."I looked at him. "At that moment, it was obvious who mattered more to you. It was her, not me. There was nothing left to explain."Matteo's eyes slowly reddened. "I was just afraid that if the Cassano men came onto the estate, things would get out of hand. I knew they'd never really hurt you—""See?"I cut hi

  • My Husband Brought Another Woman Home, I Left by Helicopter   Chapter 8

Matteo stood outside the Cassano gates for three days. The first day, he was still neatly dressed in a black overcoat. The second day, it started raining. He didn't leave.By the afternoon of the third day, his jaw was covered in stubble and his eyes were bloodshot. The head of the Moretti family had always kept everything firmly under control, but now, for the first time, he looked like he had no idea what to do next.I hadn't planned to pay any attention. That changed when I heard engines rumbling in unison in the distance. The Cassano guards quickly opened the outer gates.Six black town cars rolled up the tree-lined drive.Someone murmured, "It's the De Santis family.""Luca came in person?"Matteo's head snapped up.The De Santis family and the Cassano family had been allies for decades. The man my grandfather had wanted me to marry five years ago was Luca De Santis.Matteo had obviously heard the name too.As the cars neared the gates, he stepped right into the middle of the road

When the helicopter landed on the hill behind the Cassano estate, I saw my grandfather standing at the far end of the helipad. His hair had grown much whiter in the five years since I'd last seen him. He still wore a dark suit and carried the wooden cane I'd always thought was ugly when I was little.I'd thought he'd yell at me.After all, five years ago, I'd turned down the match he'd arranged for me because of Matteo, right in front of the entire Cassano family. I'd even said I'd never come back as long as I lived. But when my grandfather saw the blood on my shoulder and Sofia lying unconscious, the cane he'd raised stopped in midair. Instead, he brought it down hard against the ground."Save her first."The medical team wheeled Sofia away.I stood there, not knowing what to say.My grandfather came up to me and looked at me for a long time."So you finally remembered the way home?"My eyes stung. "I did."He sighed."I'm glad you're home."At those words, the tears I'd been holding

When two enforcers grabbed Lia, she finally dropped the helpless act."Why are you playing the devoted husband now?"She struggled, laughing shrilly. "You bought the ring. You took me to get the tattoo. You're the one who had me sit with you at your anniversary dinner. And your men beat Sofia like that on your own orders!"Elena's gone. You can skin me alive, and she still won't come back!"Matteo didn't say anything. That only made her more smug. "What, you regret it now? You only just realized the Cassano family has more power than you thought, and now you're scared. Isn't that it?"Matteo looked up.That look made Lia's voice falter for a second. She gritted her teeth, then sneered. "Touch me, and every Moretti secret will end up in the Baldi family's hands."The room went dead quiet.Matteo slowly straightened up.Lia thought she'd found his weak spot, and her words came faster. "The container numbers for next month's South Docks shipments. The locations of your three safe houses.

"Find out."Matteo crumpled the list in his fist. For the first time, his voice wavered."Whose helicopter was that?"One of his men went out and came back in less than ten minutes, looking uneasy. "Cassano's."The living room went silent.Matteo slowly looked up. "Which Cassano?"The man forced himself to answer. "The Cassano family on the West Side. The one that runs three docks, the North Shore shipping line, and a handful of casinos."Matteo's fingers froze.Five years ago, Elena and her grandfather had fought so bitterly over her decision to marry Matteo that they'd nearly cut each other off.Back then, Matteo had thought Elena was simply from an old-money family. He'd never really asked how much power the Cassano family had, and Elena had never used her family's connections to get anything for herself. But now he finally understood. It wasn't that Elena had nowhere to go.It was that she'd once shut every door behind her for him.Lia leaned in and said quietly, "Matteo, I was so
