Chapter 2

Autor: Tcee Eke
Aurelia’s POV

Callum stared at me for several seconds.

“You want to come with me?” he asked again.

“Yes,” I answered.

His brows furrowed, “Aurelia, this isn’t a charity gala or a business dinner.”

“I know.”

His gaze sharpened, “Then you also know it’s dangerous.”

I swallowed; of course, anything involving the mafia’s business was dangerous.

In my previous life, I had stayed home while Callum left after receiving that phone call.

Thirteen days later, Nolan died. A month later, I was buried alive. If I wanted answers, I couldn’t sit back and watch history repeat itself.

“I’m coming.”

For a moment, I thought he would refuse, but instead, he sighed.

“Fine,” he agreed.

Relief washed through me.

Ten minutes later, we were heading toward the city docks.

Callum sat beside me in the back seat of the armored SUV while several vehicles followed behind us.

His phone kept ringing. Every time he answered, his expression darkened. The atmosphere inside the car grew heavier with each passing minute.

I glanced toward the guards in the front seats. They looked tense. Far more tense than they should have been for a routine meeting.

Something was wrong.

Callum ended another call and immediately dialed someone else.

“No,” his voice was cold, “I’ll handle it personally.”

There was a pause and his jaw tightened.

“Keep everyone in position until I arrive,” he snapped, then ended the call.

I looked at him, “What happened?”

His eyes shifted to mine. For a second, something softened in his expression.

“Nothing you need to worry about, my love,” he said.

Hearing him speak to me so softly when he had killed me in my past life made me feel sick but I managed to force a smile.

The rest of the drive passed in silence.

When we finally arrived at the docks, armed guards were already waiting. Rows of shipping containers stretched toward the water. Several black vehicles were parked nearby.

Callum stepped out first then I followed just as the salty air hit my face.

Immediately, I noticed something strange. Everyone seemed nervous.

The guards weren’t standing casually. They were scanning the area, watching rooftops, checking corners. It was as if they were waiting for something or someone.

A bad feeling settled in my stomach as Callum walked toward one of the warehouses while I stayed close behind him.

“Aurelia,” his voice stopped me.

I looked up.

He reached out and adjusted a strand of hair that had fallen across my face. The simple gesture caught me off guard.

For a brief moment, I saw the man I had loved, not the monster from my memories. Just my husband.

His hand lingered against my cheek.

“You should stay near the car,” he said.

I shook my head, “No, I'm not leaving your side.”

A faint smile touched his lips.

“My stubborn Queen,” he smirked before planting a firm kiss on my lips.

Tears pricked the corners of my eyes. This was the man I remembered loving.

The man who smiled easily. The man who looked at me as if I were his entire world.

“What’s wrong?” he asked me, worry flashing in his eyes.

How could I tell him that he killed me after our son’s death and now I'm here to rewrite history?

“I miss you,” I said instead.

“Once I'm done here I'll take Nolan to his grandparents then we can go for a weekend vacation alright,” he promised.

I nodded just as Callum turned and continued walking, keeping me behind him.

Just then the first gunshot rang out and everything stopped. For half a second, nobody moved, then chaos exploded.

“AMBUSH!” The roar echoed across the docks.

More gunshots followed as one of the guards dropped to the ground. People started shouting, weapons appearing from everywhere.

I froze.

This wasn’t supposed to happen. I didn’t remember any of this, Callum hadn't told me he was ambushed and attacked at work when he returned.

Callum reacted instantly.

He grabbed my arm and pulled me behind a shipping container just as bullets tore through the air.

The deafening sound made me flinch.

“Stay down, I'll be back soon my love,” he said.

Another explosion shook the ground, the force knocking me backward. Smoke filled the air followed by screams and more gunfire.

I could barely hear anything over the ringing in my ears. The guards returned fire as bodies moved through the smoke.

Someone rushed toward us and Callum fired without hesitation. The attacker fell.

“Aurelia!” His voice sounded distant.

The smoke grew thicker. I couldn’t see more than a few feet ahead when another explosion erupted nearby.

The shipping container beside us collapsed and people scattered. The force threw me off balance and I hit the ground hard.

Pain shot through my shoulder.

“Aurelia!” I heard Callum shouting my name.

I tried to stand when suddenly strong hands grabbed me from behind.

A scream tore from my throat and I fought wildly. I kicked, scratched, twisted, yet the stranger tightened his grip.

“LET ME GO!”

The world around me blurred as smoke, fire, gunshots, and screams filled my ears and somewhere in the chaos, I heard Callum again.

“AURELIA!”

I turned toward the sound.

For one brief second, I saw him. He was fighting his way through the smoke trying to reach me when another explosion erupted between us.

The blast swallowed everything then I lost sight of him. A sharp pain exploded at the back of my head as my vision instantly blurred.

The darkness rushed toward me. The last thing I heard was Callum shouting my name then everything went black.

For the first time since I’d met him, he looked genuinely shocked, as if he never imagined his plan would end like this, as if he never imagined I would pull the trigger. The remaining henchman looked between the two brothers before wisely deciding he wanted no part in what happened next. He turned and ran, and nobody tried to stop him.I moved toward Callum. The moment I reached him,

Aurelia’s POVMy blood turned cold as the question echoed inside my head before panic slammed into me. “Nolan,” I gasped. I looked at Callum, and the same realization had already crossed his face just as his entire body went rigid.“What have you done?” he roared.Cillian smiled. The sight made my stomach churn.“Now we’re asking the right questions.”“WHERE IS MY SON?” Callum bellowed. The warehouse shook with the force of his voice.Cillian didn’t even flinch. Instead, he looked amused. As though he had been waiting for this reaction.“As angry as ever.”“If you touch my son—”“What?” Cillian interrupted mockingly. “You’ll kill me?”Callum jerked violently against the ropes, and the chair rattled. For a moment, I genuinely thought he was going to break free.“Tell me where he is.”Cillian laughed, “Relax.”My heart pounded. Relax? How could he possibly expect us to relax?“He’s alive,” Cillian said. I sighed in relief just as Callum turned toward me. “At first, I planned to kill

Aurelia’s POVThe henchmen dragged me across the warehouse. I stumbled several times, but they never loosened their grip.Cillian walked ahead of us with his hands tucked into his pockets as though we were taking a casual evening stroll instead of marching toward God knows what.My heart refused to stop pounding. The real Callum was alive. The thought repeated itself over and over inside my head.We reached the far end of the warehouse where a large steel door stood. One of the guards stepped forward and unlocked it. The heavy door creaked open.“After you,” Cillian said with a mocking smile.I hesitated, then I stepped inside. The room was dimly lit. At first, I saw nothing except concrete walls, then my eyes landed on the figure sitting in the corner. My breath caught. The man was tied to a chair. His wrists were bound behind his back. Bruises covered his face, dried blood stained his shirt, and his head hung low.For a second, I couldn’t move, then he slowly lifted his head, and our

Aurelia’s POVThe gun remained pointed directly at my chest. My heart pounded so hard I could hear it.For a long moment, I simply stared at him, then I laughed. A faint crease appeared between his brows.“What’s so funny? I just told you I'm not your husband,” he scowled at me.“I know,” I said quietly, and his smile faltered, but I continued, “I’ve known ever since you came back.”His smile disappeared completely as silence settled over the warehouse, and I took a slow step toward him despite the gun aimed at my chest.“The real Callum remembered every anniversary,” I continued, “He knew I hated mountains, he never would have forgotten Nolan’s tournament, he never would have told me to mind my own business, and he most certainly wouldn't have altered the security footage after being kidnapped.”For the first time, genuine surprise flashed across his face.“I spent days trying to understand what happened to my husband,” I held his gaze, “Then I realized I was asking the wrong question

Aurelia’s POVMy blood turned to ice as Callum stood behind me, his gaze flickering from my laptop screen to my face.I forced myself to remain calm.“What are you doing here?” I asked.A humorless laugh escaped him.“This is my office,” he snapped. “Right,” I laughed nervously. He took a few steps forward, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Why won't you let things be, Aurelia? Why do you keep digging?” he hissed at me. My grip tightened around the edge of the desk.“Why didn't you tell anyone you were kidnapped and how did you survive?” I asked, my tone dripping with suspicion. His jaw tightened, “I am the head of the Arden Family. I can't go around letting everyone know that in a moment of weakness, I was kidnapped. Besides, I fought my way out and escaped.”“But why did you lie to me? Why didn't you tell me?” I queried. His voice was sharp, “If word gets out that I was kidnapped, every enemy we have will see weakness. I couldn't risk you knowing.”I frowned. His explanation ma

Aurelia’s POVSlowly, I turned around to see Callum standing in the doorway, the hidden phone still in my hand. For one terrifying second, neither of us spoke, then his gaze dropped to the device.“What are you doing here?” His voice was calm.I forced myself to smile, “I couldn’t sleep.”His eyes narrowed, “And that led you to my office?”I laughed nervously, “I was looking for painkillers.”The lie sounded ridiculous even to me. Callum clearly didn’t believe a word of it, his gaze remained fixed on the phone. My pulse hammered. If he asked me to unlock it, I was finished. Fortunately, he walked forward and held out his hand.“Give it to me.”I hesitated then I handed it over.“What phone is that?” I asked casually.“Work phone,” his answer came immediately. “Who texted you?”His expression hardened, “Aurelia.”“What?”“It’s work. Mind your damn business.”His tone left no room for discussion.I swallowed my frustration.“Okay.”For a moment, neither of us spoke, then he slipped the
