Chapter 1

"This is Sylvie. I'm done being the good little housewife. Tell the Sassis to brace for my return."

I hung up on the last word, ending the call and seven years of swallowed pride.

I threw the black stocking back where I found it, went home, and scrubbed my hands raw, but the sickly sweet perfume still clung to me.

I caught my reflection in the mirror. My lips were pale, and my eyes were so sunken I hardly recognized myself.

I touched the dark circles under my eyes and noticed the tiny tattoo on my wrist. Seven years ago, Stefano Pace and I got matching tattoos. He got the key, and I got the lock.

"You're the only one I'll ever unlock," he had said to me, so earnestly it sounded like a wish.

I could still feel his kiss on my wrist. Now the lock remained, but the key was gone.

Tears fell from the corners of my eyes, drop by drop, into the sink.

"I guess we didn't make it past the seven-year itch after all," I murmured.

Seven years ago, Dad, Don of the Sassi family, held a gun to my head and told me not to marry Stefano.

I married him anyway, for love, for a soldato who had nothing but ambition back then. I gave up my birthright, my crown, and my family's empire to build his instead.

I played the perfect housewife, funneling him money and dealing with his enemies. Step by step, I put him on this city's underworld throne.

Back then, Stefano said I was the only light in his life. Now he couldn't take his eyes off Isla Torelli.

She'd started as a dancer. Now, she was his underboss. She used her body as a weapon, and he worshiped power in any form.

Stefano made Isla his underboss, his right hand, the charm he relied on when things got rough. Meanwhile, I, his wife, was reduced to a trophy.

Rumors about them had been swirling in our circles for a long time. Whenever the doubts ate at me and I confronted him about it, he denied it outright and said he and Isla kept it strictly professional.

I believed him.

Then he started staying out all night and coming home reeking of her perfume. Now there was a black stocking in his car.

This time, I was going to get an answer.

I went full glam, slipped into my priciest dress, and had the driver drop me off at the entrance to Stefano's private club, the place where we first met.

He once pointed at this gilded money pit and said, "I'll own this place someday."

I quietly bought the club and let it go to him for cheap just to make that happen. I never thought he'd turn it into a playground for someone else.

The guard at the door gave me a nod when he saw me. "Mrs. Pace. Don Pace isn't in right now."

I gave him a curt nod, keeping my voice even. "It's fine. I'll wait."

I eased open the door to Stefano's private room. It smelled like whiskey, leather, and smoke. Isla was sprawled on the couch, a cigarette resting between her perfectly manicured fingers.

She froze for a beat when I walked in, then sprang to her feet. "Mrs. Pace, what brings you here? I was just waiting for Don Pace to get back so we could go over the new casino plans."

I let out a short, humorless laugh. "Cut the act, Isla. It's just us."

The fluster in her eyes faded, leaving pure defiance. "Alright, Sylvie. If that's what you want."

She sank into the couch and crossed her legs, slow and deliberate. "What are you doing here, Sylvie? Stefano isn't here right now."

I tossed the photo of the black stocking I'd found in Stefano's car onto the table in front of her. "You left this in his car on purpose, didn't you?"

Isla glanced down, a smug smile tugging at her lips. "Oh, so you found it. That's not on me, sweetheart. That's on Stefano. He says he needs my scent to get hard. Guess you don't do it for him anymore."

Her words hit like a bullet and shattered my heart, but I didn't even flinch.

"No matter what you've done behind my back, I'll always be his wife. And you'll always be the other woman he has to hide," I said calmly.

A laugh burst out of her, and her eyes lit with something wild. "The other woman? Sylvie, remember this. The one he doesn't love is the other woman!"

Then I caught the footsteps I knew by heart.

Stefano had returned.

Isla flashed a wicked grin, snatched the whiskey bottle off the table, and smashed it over her own head without thinking.

The bottle shattered and blood poured. Then, she let out a bloodcurdling scream. "Mrs. Pace! Please don't hurt me! I'm sorry!"

Before I could react, she stuffed the bloody bottle into my hand.

Right then, the door flew open.

Six months later, at the Sassis' annual meeting, I took the head seat.Over the last six months, with Dad and Marco behind me, I quickly learned the ropes of the family business. I also used Marco's playbook and resources to double the Sassis' footprint. The family elders who used to sneer at me were respectful now. After what I'd accomplished, I had proved I was a worthy heir to the Sassis. After the meeting, I left the conference room. Marco was waiting just outside, dressed casually and looking relaxed.Over the last six months, something between us had shifted. He wasn't just my business partner anymore. He felt like my mentor, my friend, my family. He walked me through tough deals, step by step. On nights I couldn't sleep over the child I'd lost, he sat with me in silence till dawn. Our marriage started as a deal, but it quietly found its way into our lives.Marco walked over and took the file from me as if it were the most natural thing in the world. "All done?"I gave a l

Isla was sprawled on the couch in a sheet mask, mindlessly scrolling through luxury shopping sites. She'd already decided that when Stefano got back, she'd make him buy her the latest Hermes bag to make up for everything she'd had to "put up with".The door blasted open with a brutal kick. The crash was so loud that she dropped her phone. "Stefano? Wh-what's wrong?"When Isla caught the murderous look on his face, her stomach dropped, but she snapped on a doe-eyed, helpless look. She got up and reached for his arm."Don't lay your filthy hands on me!" Stefano roared, shaking his arm free so hard she stumbled back. Her eyes burned as tears welled up. "Stefano, you hurt me... Did something happen? Did that bitch Sylvie run her mouth about me again?""You're still putting on an act?"Stefano picked the phone off the floor and played that recording. Isla's voice echoed through the quiet room, word for word. Her face went white. Even the sheet mask couldn't hide her fear. "N-no... i

Marco moved in front of me, shielding me while two burly security guards yanked Stefano by the arms and hauled him out of the hotel. He was still thrashing and cursing. Whatever dignity he had left was gone. "Marco! Sylvie! You'll regret this!"His voice boomed through the lobby, and heads snapped around. The face I used to love was now twisted with anger and humiliation. Stefano felt unfamiliar to me. I tuned out his rant and just watched him get tossed out the door, sprawling on the steps outside.Marco slipped out of his suit jacket and draped it over my shoulders."Did that scare you?" he asked softly.I shook my head and hooked my arm through his. "Let's go home."We slid into the Rolls-Royce, and it eased away from the hotel. In the rearview mirror, I saw Stefano struggle to his feet and pull out his phone, as if to call someone. His kingdom would start to crumble today. And I'd be the one to yank the first brick from the wall.…By the time we got to Marco's estate,

I got home and sank onto the living room couch, still too wired to settle down. Mom and Dad read it on my face and came over, worried.I took a deep breath and told them, "Mom, Dad, I'm married."The room went dead quiet.Mom's eyes went wide, like she couldn't believe what she was hearing. "What did you just say? Sylvie, you got married? You just got divorced!""It's part of my revenge plan. It's just a deal. If it doesn't work, we can end the marriage anytime," I said, then explained the whole thing.Mom still couldn't accept it. "You are being way too impulsive! How can you treat marriage like it's a game?""That's enough," Dad cut in.He stepped in front of me, studied me with an unreadable gaze, and finally said, "I believe my daughter."With Dad backing me up, Mom eventually gave in, though she still looked unsure.…The next morning, a black Rolls-Royce pulled up to my door. I slipped into a sharp white suit and topped it off with meticulous makeup. On the way to the

Marco's plan for revenge felt like a ray of light in the dark. It gave me hope, but I still had my doubts.I looked at Marco, not about to admit I was already getting my hopes up. "Stefano's no fool. He won't take the bait that easily."Marco sounded sure of himself. "You'll see the first step of payback tomorrow. Stefano's coming to this hotel for a major arms deal, and he has no idea the dealer he's meeting is me."Just picturing Stefano's face tomorrow when he realized he'd been doing business with Marco sent a rush of joy through me.Marco's voice cut through my thoughts. "It's not enough yet. If we're going to make it hurt, we need to refine the plan."He held my gaze, dead serious. "Sylvie, let's get married."I thought I misheard him. The idea was flat-out ridiculous. "What? I just clawed my way out of a hellish marriage, and you want me to jump into another one for revenge?"Marco explained, "This isn't just revenge. It's a statement. It's telling everyone, especially St

I looked Marco straight in the eye. "How do you know so much about me? Are you spying on me?"Marco met my gaze and nodded. "I've been keeping an eye on you, Sylvie, just not in the way you think. I'm not spying on you. I'm looking out for you.""Looking out for me?"That sounded ridiculous. We didn't even know each other. I'd only seen him once, at a party. He didn't answer. Instead, he asked something unrelated. "Do you remember the car accident 15 years ago?"15 years ago? The span of it made my mind go blank for a second.Marco continued, "That day, a careless little boy darted into the street after a ball. A runaway truck was barreling straight at him. At the last second, a little girl lunged at him without hesitation and pushed him away from the truck."His words turned a key, unlocking a dusty corner of my memory. That afternoon came flooding back. Brakes screeched, people shouted, and my arm burned as it hit the pavement. The blur snapped into focus. My pulse spiked. I
