Chapter 5

Author: Alyssa J
Damien shoved the officers aside, shielding Lily with his body. "She's thirteen years old! How could she possibly commit murder? This is a setup! I'll sue you for defamation!"

The officer didn't blink. He just hit the enter key.

A high-definition video started playing on the laptop screen.

In the footage, Lily was chewing gum, staring through the windshield at my father, who was crossing the street.

Lily didn't hit the brakes. Instead, a twisted, excited grin spread across her face.

"Die, you old geezer!"

She slammed her foot down on the gas pedal.

The video ended. Dead silence.

Damien's face went white instantly, as if drained of blood. He looked down at his "sweet, innocent" daughter, trembling.

"This... this is impossible... Lily, you said it was dark, that you didn't see him... You said it was an accident! Tell me that wasn't real!"

Lily panicked. She hadn't expected the dashcam footage to be recovered. She grabbed Damien's clothes, crying crocodile tears.

"Daddy, help me! It's Ari

Six months later. After months of tireless treatment by the world's top neurology team, the rhythm of my father's heart monitor suddenly changed to a rapid, urgent beeping."Dad? Dad! Can you hear me?" I threw myself at the bedside, my voice trembling and off-key, tears instantly blurring my vision. My father's eyelids fluttered violently, as if he were fighting a life-or-death battle against a heavy nightmare. Finally, his cloudy eyes snapped open, his pupils filled with terror. He opened his dry, cracked lips and used every ounce of his remaining strength to grip my wrist, his fingernails digging into my flesh."Aria... run... run away... Damien and his adopted daughter... don't let them near you..."The first thing my father did upon waking wasn't to cry out in pain or ask for water. Even after sleeping for six months, protecting his daughter was an instinct carved into his bones. My heart felt like it was being sliced open. I pressed his hand against my tear-stained face and choked

It has been exactly two weeks since the news of my "death" broke. The CEO's office, once spotless, was now filled with the pungent smell of alcohol and the stench of decay.Damien was slumped on the carpet, unshaven, his eyes sunken and hollow. His phone buzzed frantically next to him—the final ultimatum from the board regarding the bankruptcy liquidation—but he didn't even spare it a glance. He tossed it straight into the trash."Aria..." His rough fingers traced the gentle smile of the woman in the photo frame over and over again, tears silently dripping onto the glass. "Please come back, okay? I know I was wrong... If you come back, I don't want anything else..."For the past two weeks, he had been drinking like a madman, as if drowning himself in alcohol was the only way to briefly escape the crushing regret of having pushed the love of his life into the abyss with his own hands.Bang! The office door was slammed open."Get out! I'm not seeing anyone!" Damien grabbed a liquor bottl

I snapped my eyes open. Instead of a moldy, leaking ceiling, I was staring up at a priceless crystal chandelier."You're awake?" A deep, magnetic male voice resonated right next to me.I scrambled back, curling into a defensive ball and grabbing a pillow as a shield. "Stay back! Don't touch me!"A large, strong hand gently pinned my wrist. "Aria, it's okay. Don't be afraid."I turned to look at him, my body tense. "Who are you? Why did you save me?"Instead of answering, he picked up a remote and clicked it. A massive screen on the wall lit up. It showed a sterile, high-tech ICU. In the center of all the machinery lay a thin old man. He was hooked up to tubes, but he had color in his cheeks, and his chest was rising and falling rhythmically."Dad!!" I rushed to the screen, my trembling fingers tracing his familiar face as tears streamed down my cheeks."He's in the top VIP suite at the University Hospital of Zurich," the man said from behind me, his voice steady. "The world's best neur

Because Lily was a minor and the charge was only "attempted" murder, Damien bailed her out. She walked out of juvenile detention in just two weeks.Without my strict rules or supervision at home, Lily dropped the act completely. She became absolutely lawless.A week later, Damien brought Lily to a signing dinner with the Vanderbilts—an old European banking dynasty. He had spent three years preparing for this deal, leveraging nearly all the company's cash flow to make it happen. In the past, I would have forced Lily to memorize the guest list and etiquette protocols a week in advance for an event like this. If she refused, I would have grounded her. Damien used to tell me to lay off, saying she was sensible for a thirteen-year-old.Well, now he finally got his wish. He attended the dinner with his "sensible" daughter."What the hell is this swill? You call this a drink?" Impatient with the service speed, Lily shoved the waiter."Move! Get out of my way!"She shoved him with all her migh

An hour after I was booked, Damien showed up in the visitation room with a lawyer and a cashmere blanket. Through the iron bars, he tried to hand the blanket to me."Aria, I know you've had a rough night."He held onto my hand through the gaps. "Lily has already apologized. She only did it to get back at you for hitting her earlier."I looked at this man, a chill running down my spine."So," I stared at him coldly. "To save face for your criminal daughter, I have to be the sacrificial lamb? Why?"Damien frowned. "Don't be so dramatic. I've already pulled some strings. You're the only one in this holding cell. The blanket is brand new, and I had a five-star meal delivered for you. The lawyer will handle the bail paperwork first thing in the morning, and I'll take you home."He sighed. "Aria, Lily is Sarah's daughter, after all. Sarah died saving me. I promised I would keep Lily safe for the rest of her life."Sarah saved your life, so I have to pay for it with mine? Why does your gratit
