Chapter 1

"Lucas, listen to me. Get Isabella out of this house before Sophia wakes up. You know what'll happen if she opens her eyes and sees that woman here."

"Ma, I can't just throw her out. Vincent took a bullet meant for me. If he hadn't stepped in, I'd be the one in the ground. He's gone, and Isabella is the only family he left behind. I'm not leaving his widow out there with a target on her back. I'll talk to Sophia when she wakes up."

"You know Sophia. She won't see a widow. She'll see another woman in her house."

My eyes snapped open.

I went still.

Then the truth hit me.

I was back.

Ten years before everything went to hell.

None of it had happened yet.

This time, I would survive.

So would my family.

Anna, Lucas's mother, rushed to my bedside.

"Sophia, thank God you're awake. Don't worry, I've already made myself clear to Lucas. I won't let him bring another woman into your home."

"Ma, I've made my decision. Isabella stays under my protection."

"You ungrateful little—"

"Please... don't fight because of me."

A soft voice cut through the tension. Isabella stepped into the room in a plain mourning dress.

"I'm sorry. I never wanted to bring trouble to this house." She turned to Lucas, her eyes shining with tears. "Lucas, I know you're only trying to protect me, but I'm clearly causing problems for your family. I'll go. I don't want Sophia to hate you because of me."

She had barely taken two steps when Lucas caught her wrist and pulled her back.

"You're staying."

There was no room for argument in his voice.

I scoffed.

Only then did Lucas look at me.

"Sophia, I promise. Once Vincent's blood debt is settled, Isabella will leave. She can't be left alone right now—not while Vincent's killers are still breathing. She stays here for now. That's all."

I had lost control the last time.

I had ordered my father's men to drag Isabella out by the hair and throw her onto the street.

It only gave Lucas another reason to hate me.

I forced myself back into the present and spoke.

"Fine."

The room went dead silent.

Everyone stared at me like they no longer recognized me.

"I said fine. Tell Mrs. Russo to prepare a guest room for her."

"Thank you, Sophia!"

Isabella recovered first. She rushed forward as if she wanted to take my hand.

I flinched back, yanking my hand away.

This woman had already ruined me once.

I had no intention of playing nice with her this time.

"This is a Gambino house. We live by rules here. Break them, and protection or not, you're out of this house. Am I clear?"

I didn't wait for a reply.

I threw back the covers, got out of bed, and walked out without looking at any of them.

I could hear Lucas's men murmuring just outside the front doors of the estate.

"You think the boss's daughter is gonna let this slide?"

"Lower your voice unless you want to end up in the river. But come on. She's going to tear this house apart."

"Wait. We haven't heard screaming yet. What the hell's going on in there?"

"Miss Sophia is definitely planning something. Since when has she ever stayed quiet over another woman?"

I cleared my throat. Loudly.

The men stiffened at once.

I walked past them without a word, leaving them red-faced at the doors.

Liam had spared no expense, turning the sun-dappled lawns of our waterfront estate into something out of a dream, every detail shaped around the life I had always wanted but had never dared to ask for.Ivory rose petals covered the grass, soft string music drifted through the warm Miami breeze, and my father walked beside me with pride shining in his eyes—the kind of pride he had never allowed himself to show back in the old life.I walked toward Liam slowly, deliberately, my bouquet of white gardenias heavy in my hands. When I tossed it over my shoulder, bright laughter and a giddy scramble broke out behind us.As Liam pulled me into his arms for our first kiss as husband and wife, a cold ghost of a memory flickered at the edge of my mind.My first wedding to Lucas had taken place in a cramped, windowless judge's chambers, with no fanfare, no flowers, not even a proper wedding band. When I had begged for something that felt like mine, he had only frowned, sharp and dismissive."A big

I brought him home to meet my family. My father took one long look at Liam, clapped him on the shoulder, and led him into the study for bourbon.Through the door, I heard them talking markets, business, and board seats instead of body counts.Mom fussed over plates of homemade food, watching Liam with a fierce, hopeful tenderness that made my throat tighten.Later, she pulled me into the pantry, her voice low."He's solid, girl. Tell him everything. The name. The life we lived. A clean house has no hidden corners. You'll know if he's the right man by how he stands after hearing it."So I did.On a breezy night out on the terrace, I laid it all bare: the Gambino legacy, the old family business, my alliance marriage, Lucas's betrayal, the collapse, my clean break, and our legitimate rebuild.Liam listened, his face unreadable in the twilight. When I finished, I gave him a clean way out."It's a heavy history to carry. I'd understand if it changes things."He was quiet for a full minute,

In the end, Lucas made one last desperate play.He cut a deal with independent crews outside the Five Families. He signed away every asset, every marker owed to him, every last ounce of influence he had left in New York—all in exchange for getting the contract lifted. He walked out alive, a gutted ghost with nothing but the clothes on his back and the two women still clinging to the ruins of his life. They fled west to Chicago, chasing a place where they could disappear.Isabella fought him every mile of the way, her carefully crafted fragile-bird act finally cracking apart on the highway. She screamed that Lucas was an idiot who had thrown away a golden ticket to the Gambino table for a quick piece, that she had never signed up to run beside a dead man walking. The endless paranoia, the bitter cold, and the total collapse of everything she had known finally broke Anna. She had survived a lifetime in the underworld, watched empires rise and fall, but she could not survive being nobody

"What?!" Anna's eyes went wide, fixed on me like I'd pressed a loaded gun to her chest."No. Lucas told me it was just a stupid fight between you two!"I let out a cold, sharp laugh and slid the signed divorce papers toward her."Read them yourself."Her fingers shook so badly."Sophia, you have to make your father help Lucas! They're going to kill him!""I can't. My father doesn't run the table anymore. Besides—" I nodded at the papers. "Lucas is no longer my concern."I lifted my chin toward the estate's wrought-iron gates."Speak of the devil. Look who finally crawled here."Outside the gate stood Lucas, disheveled, dried blood crusted along his jaw, shouting at our soldiers to let him in while dragging a terrified Isabella behind him.Even a blind man could see the hounds were closing in.Anna dropped to her knees, sobbing for them to open the gates.I held her gaze for one icy second, then nodded to security."Let them in."Lucas stumbled inside, Isabella clinging to his arm like

For the next week, I stayed locked in my study.Files covered my desk, and the walls were pinned with maps, account sheets, crew lists, and shipping routes.Halfway through the week, my mother pushed the door open."Baby, what on earth are you doing? It's a divorce, sweetheart. You don't have to destroy yourself over it.""Mom, I'm fine."I set my pen down and looked up at her."Can you get Dad in here? There's something I need both of you to hear."Ten minutes later, my parents were sitting across from me at the desk."Sophia," my father said, glancing at the walls, "what exactly have you been planning in here?"I took a breath and put the truth on the table."Dad, Mom. I want you to hand control of the family to Uncle Antonio. Then we leave New York and move to Miami. As soon as possible."My father's face darkened instantly."That's ridiculous. The Gambino name has owned a piece of New York for three generations. We don't just pack a few bags and walk away from it.""I know how this

Lucas and Isabella returned to the Gambino estate that evening. The moment Isabella saw me, she hurried over."Sophia, I promise I'll be gone as soon as I find somewhere safe. I don't want to come between you and Lucas."I said nothing. Her face flushed with embarrassment.Lucas stepped forward, his expression dark."Sophia, say something. Don't play games with me."I pulled the divorce papers from my pocket and slapped them onto the table between us."Sign it. We end this clean."He froze."You're serious?"I laughed, sharp and cold."Completely. I'm giving you both what you want."For one brief second, triumph flashed across Isabella's face. Then she stepped closer and laid a hand on Lucas's arm."Sophia, don't do this out of anger. Lucas never meant to hurt you."Even she didn't sound like she believed it."I don't want his love. You can have it.""Sophia, don't say that. Lucas and I have never crossed a line."I scoffed."You crossed the line the moment you moved under my roof."Is
