Chapter 4

Author: No Mood Nano
In a daze, I followed the doctor into the ICU.

My mother-in-law could barely open her eyes, but she was still searching for me.

“My sweet girl, this family has wronged you. Divorce Ryan and make sure he walks away with nothing.”

She had clearly noticed that I was the only one who had come.

“Mom, you’re going to be okay. Please don’t scare me.”

She gave me a weak smile.

“I used up all my luck the day you came into my life. Go see Sophie.”

Sophie couldn’t speak, but her eyes remained fixed on me.

I couldn’t even hold her hand.

It was gone.

I dropped to my knees beside her bed, sobbing so hard I could barely breathe.

Sophie glanced toward something beside her pillow.

I opened the box and collapsed onto the floor.

Inside was the delicate star bracelet.

If her brother wouldn’t give it to me, she would.

She couldn’t make a sound, but I still understood what she was trying to say.

“Lily, I love you.”

I had no idea how long I remained kneeling beside her bed.

When I finally tried to stand, the room tilted.

A second later, I collapsed.

By the time I woke up, it was the next morning.

Derek handed me a medical report.

“Lily, you were pregnant. But after everything you went through last night, you miscarried.”

I didn’t even look at the report.

“What about Ryan’s parents and Sophie?”

“They’re still in the morgue.”

It was as though I’d lost the ability to feel anger.

Completely numb, I arranged their funerals and contacted the officers who had investigated the crash.

They accompanied me to the police station to file a formal report.

The pileup had killed twenty people.

More than thirty had been critically injured, and over forty had suffered minor injuries.

It was one of the worst highway disasters in a decade.

And because the crash appeared to have been deliberately caused, the police immediately formed a special task force.

They took my statement and collected security footage from around my home.

After leaving the station, I contacted a funeral home.

Then I posted an obituary on social media.

Aunt Helen called almost immediately and began screaming at me.

“Have you lost your mind, Lily Lewis?

“No matter how much you hate Ryan, you can’t joke about something like this! How could you curse people with such a horrible lie? Do you have any humanity at all? No wonder Ryan doesn’t love you!”

I waited until she’d finished before speaking.

“I’m at the funeral home. You can come say goodbye to them.”

By the time Aunt Helen arrived, I’d already hired the best mortuary cosmetologist available to prepare them for viewing.

My mother-in-law and Sophie had always cared about their appearance.

I wanted them to leave this world with dignity.

The moment Aunt Helen saw them lying in their caskets, she lost control.

She lunged at me, trying to hit me.

“Why didn’t you tell me? We could’ve saved them! How could you be so heartless?”

I was still weak from the miscarriage, so Derek stepped in front of me.

“You know perfectly well that I told you.

“Don’t try to dump your guilt on me. I did everything I could.”

Aunt Helen slapped herself repeatedly, as though she wished she could’ve died in her sister’s place.

She and my mother-in-law had always been close.

If Ryan hadn’t misled her, she never would’ve refused to help.

But none of that had anything to do with me anymore.

I took the divorce papers my lawyer had delivered that morning, along with my mother-in-law’s will, and returned home.

My daughter was curled up on the couch waiting for me.

She didn’t even have a blanket.

I hurried over, picked her up, and carried her toward the bedroom.

As I passed the master bedroom, the door suddenly opened from the inside.

Serena walked out with her clothes rumpled and a bandage wrapped around her arm.

Ryan followed close behind.

He was shirtless, with fresh scratch marks covering his shoulders and back.

The moment he saw me, guilt flashed across his face, and he took half a step back.

“Why are you home?”

Serena looked me up and down.

“You were out all night, Miss Lewis. Did you have fun?”

I ignored her and looked directly at Ryan.

“Ryan, are you coming to your parents’ and sister’s funeral?”

“Lily, what did you mean by that?“How do you know what happened before? Did you come back too?”I ignored his shouting and walked out of the police station.I’d said it on purpose. From the first day I came back, Ryan’s attitude toward our daughter had made me suspicious. The way he looked at her was especially telling. Before, he’d merely been indifferent. This time, he looked as though he wanted to kill her on the spot. And Ryan had always been close to Sophie. If he’d truly known his family had been in a serious accident, he never would’ve fired Derek and left me with no way to help them. There was only one explanation.Serena had either told him I was the one in the car or claimed it was only a minor accident. After blaming me for Serena’s death in our previous life, Ryan had hated me enough to believe anything she said. But once he realized Serena hadn’t just tried to kill me, but had also knowingly sacrificed his family, he finally snapped.Only Aunt Helen and I atte

Once the funeral was over tomorrow, Ryan and I would finalize our divorce. The house was legally mine, but knowing Serena had been inside made me sick.I’d already had someone purchase another property for me, and it would be ready for us to move into soon. When the funeral home called, I assumed they had the wrong number.“Miss Lewis, your husband refuses to leave the funeral home. Our policy doesn’t allow anyone to remain here overnight.“Would you please come and talk to him?”I didn’t want to see Ryan, so I called Derek instead. An hour later, he brought Ryan home, completely wasted.“I’m sorry, Lily. I tried to take him to a hotel, but he refused to go and kept causing a scene. Someone called the police, so I had no choice but to bring him here.“Don’t worry. I’ll stay with him downstairs tonight. I won’t let him come upstairs.”After everything that had happened, Derek no longer felt the same brotherly loyalty toward Ryan.He was only helping now because I’d asked him

“How did you know there was something wrong with the brake lines?”Serena collapsed onto the floor.During the two days I spent recovering in the hospital, my phone never stopped ringing. My lawyer kept me updated on the investigation. At first, Serena refused to say a word. She hired the best attorney she could find and left everything to him.Her plan had seemed foolproof. She had never personally gone near the car, so she believed she could easily clear her name. And she’d only met the man who tampered with it once at a bar. That alone was hardly direct evidence. What she hadn’t expected was for the man, who claimed he’d already fled the country, to be arrested at the border. He’d seen the news and learned how many people had died because of him.The guilt and fear broke him.The moment he sat down in the interrogation room, he confessed to everything.“She gave me a million dollars that night and told me to cut the brake lines. She said the car belonged to a woman name

Aunt Helen answered almost immediately.“Ryan, you finally picked up. Come to the Eastside Funeral Home. There’s still time to see them one last time. They’re…”Her voice broke several times.“It was horrible. Why did this have to happen to them?”Ryan understood every word she said. But put together, none of them made any sense.“Aunt Helen, what are you talking about? Why would my parents be at a funeral home? They were perfectly fine yesterday.“Did you have another fight with Mom?”Aunt Helen screamed into the phone.“I wish your mother and I had only fought! I wish I’d been the one in that accident! Sophie was only eighteen. Her life had barely begun!”Aunt Helen had never married and had always treated Sophie like her own daughter. She would never joke about something happening to her.Ryan finally began to panic. After hanging up, he called Derek.“Why did you call me last night?”Hatred filled Derek’s voice.“You have the nerve to ask? While you were in bed with

Serena looked at me with open contempt, as though I were garbage.I finally managed to wrench myself free from Ryan’s grip.Air rushed painfully into my lungs, and my coughing echoed through the second floor.Suddenly, a violent cramp tore through my abdomen.Something warm trickled down my thighs.Clutching my stomach, I turned toward my daughter’s room.“Come to the funeral or don’t. It’s your choice.”I’d barely taken two steps when Serena jumped off the bed and blocked my way.“Wait!“Why does this agreement say Ryan has to walk away with nothing?”My stomach was already in agony. When she abruptly yanked my arm, the pain became so intense that I collapsed onto the floor.Cold sweat drenched my entire body.“Let go.”My voice was weak.I said it twice, but she ignored me.Serena clung tightly to my wrist.“Explain what this means, or I’ll tear it up!”Ryan finally picked up the agreement and read the terms carefully.“Both families’ companies, shares, properties,

The guilt on Ryan’s face vanished, replaced by fury.He raised his hand as if to slap me.“Have you lost your mind? How dare you say something like that about my parents?”I didn’t flinch.I simply asked him again. Before he could answer, Serena cut in.“Ryan, Miss Lewis must be upset because you spent my birthday with me yesterday. This is my fault. I should apologize to her.”She turned to me.“I’m sorry. Turning thirty was a big deal to me, and there was a terrible storm last night. I was injured, so Ryan had to stay with me.”She hurried toward me and reached for my hand.I stepped away without even touching her, but she suddenly threw herself backward.“Miss Lewis, why did you push me?”Ryan shot me a vicious glare and shoved past me to help Serena.I was already weak and still holding my daughter. The force nearly sent me tumbling down the stairs.Thankfully, the nanny who had come home with me caught me in time. She took my daughter and carried her to the bedroom.
