Chapter 4

Author: Oatmeal
Selina went downstairs and headed out of the estate.

Charles never tried to stop her. Susie followed and pleaded with her a few times, but once Selina passed through the gate, Susie stayed on the steps and only kept calling for her to stay.

Selina merely gave a silent smile at the performance.

She took a car out to the country house. The house was her own private property. Back when she and Charles had first come to Southport to make their way, she had wanted a home, so she bought it with her own savings.

That country house held too many memories of her and Charles.

Something bitter rose in her chest.

In her last life, Charles's will had even instructed her to live here, and Emma, the daughter she had raised so carefully, had agreed.

It was laughable, now that she thought about it.

But none of it mattered. Once she dealt with this house, she was leaving here for good.

That night Selina slept unusually well.

Early the next morning she went out to find an agent and sign a listing agreement. She had barely stepped outside when she found Charles crouched at the curb with a bouquet in his hands.

He saw her and came straight over, delight in his eyes. "I knew you'd be here.

"I bought these for you. See if you like them."

Selina frowned and covered her nose.

She had always had bad sinus trouble, and pollen made it worse. Susie was the one who loved growing flowers.

Selina didn't take them. She pulled the car door open to leave, and before she could get in, something yanked her back by her clothes.

She fell backward, caught off guard.

"It's you! Selina, you bitch! Where did you take my wife?! Bring her out here!"

Selina's heart lurched. She looked up into the murderous face of Bruno DeLuca, Susie's husband.

Before she could say a word, Bruno hauled her up, cocked the hammer, and pressed the muzzle to her forehead. "If you don't hand her over, I'll kill you right now!"

Selina's wrists shook and her heart hammered.

In her last life she had gone to Sicily and taken Susie away, and crippled one of Bruno's legs doing it.

As soon as Bruno healed, he came after her to Southport.

He camped outside her cigar shop and made scenes, demanding she produce Susie. Because she couldn't bear to see Susie suffer, she handled Bruno herself, and every time he showed up she had her bodyguards beat him.

Then one time she was in a hurry and went out alone with no bodyguards, and Bruno got his chance.

She took three bullets and spent months in the hospital, and while she was down a rival took her largest club away from her, leaving several bars unable to cover their costs and forced to close. The losses were enormous.

Remembering all of it steadied her considerably.

She wasn't letting garbage like this cost her anything again.

Calmly, she pushed his gun aside with one finger and guided the muzzle toward Charles beside her.

"Your wife going missing is none of my business. He's the one you want to kill. He took her, not me."

Selina shrugged, entirely at ease.

Bruno swung around on Charles, both hands on the gun, and rushed forward until the muzzle was against Charles's temple.

"It was you! You took my wife! Is she sleeping with you? Tell me! How many times have you slept with her?!

"I'll drag your name through the mud all over Southport! Who the hell are you to take my wife?"

Bruno was practically screaming. He pulled out his phone and started filming Charles's face.

"You seduced her, didn't you? You play the devoted husband to her sister by day, then crawl into her bed at night. Have you got no shame! I saw you fawning over her before. Turns out you'd already been sleeping with her.

"I'm putting this online and letting everyone know!"

Bruno said it like a man in the right, and the second he finished recording he moved to upload it. Charles's face went scarlet.

He lunged for Bruno's phone, and Bruno spun the muzzle back on him, ready to fire.

"Touch me and see what happens!"

Charles raised both hands and explained in a rush, "Don't do anything stupid! There's nothing between us. I brought her out of there because she's Selina's sister, that's all. And what about what you did?!

"You and that woman humiliated her and tormented her together. You nearly tortured her to death. Do you understand that?!"

Even with a gun to his head, Charles defended Susie that fiercely.

Watching it, Selina didn't say one word.

She turned and got in her car and drove off to deal with this last piece of property. In under two hours it was done.

She was about to go back and pack when Adrian called her.

That same day she went back to the grounds to pack. And again, she used the side gate. But she had barely stepped out of the car when a figure rushed at her and grabbed her wrist, stopping her short.Selina's head snapped around.Charles stood before her looking ruined, his suit torn and his uncut hair a tangled mess."Selina, will you just let me explain?"You won't even give me a chance to explain, over Susie? After all the years we've been together!"There was no sympathy in Selina, only endless disgust."Enough!"Charles was so startled by the shout that he froze.Selina had never lost her temper at him like that. Even in their worst arguments, she had never let it get away from her."Selina, don't be like this, we can talk."I've been waiting out here over a month. Can you really be that hard?"Selina threw his hand off in distaste."Everything you've done only makes me hate you more."Did I make you wait out here for a month? Why should I be soft about it? What are you to me?"Ch

Selina simply felt that nothing was going her way today.Seeing how cold she was, Charles softened all over and lowered his head. "I know everything that happened."I know all of it was Susie. It was her, and if she hadn't called me, I never would have gone to Sicily to bring her back."I've already thrown her out. There will be nothing between us ever again. I was only good to her because she was your sister. I was thinking of you."I'm begging you, stop being angry with me, please?"Selina found the whole speech nauseating, and said coldly, "We're divorced. Please stop bothering me."You've seen for yourself now, so let me be clear. I don't want anything to do with you and I don't want to see you again."Tears filled Charles's eyes. He reached for Selina, but she slipped away from him with ease. His hand hung in the air, unsure what to do with itself."I know you won't forgive me easily, but you must still love me. I know I shouldn't have brought Susie back."There will never be a ne

"Let him." Selina had been letting it go, little by little.Hearing Charles's name did nothing to her anymore."Say the word and I'll deal with it for you."Selina pressed her lips together, more moved than she wanted to be.Back when she was with Charles, Charles never discussed a single thing with her, never asked what she thought. There had been a client once who said the wrong thing to her at a party.Afterward Charles hired a hitman and had the man dealt with right in the street, and it was nearly traced back to them, which would have been a disaster. She had been the one to step in and clean it up and keep it quiet. She had told him afterward that he was too reckless, and he thought it proved he loved her and wanted to protect her, and saw nothing wrong with what he'd done. And somehow, back then, Selina had let that argument convince her.Strange, looking back on it.Coming out of the office, Selina felt unsettled. To take the edge off it, she threw herself into work.Every day

It took Selina less than half a month to learn the hunting grounds inside out.The Winthrop family dealt with old money and politicians because the hunting grounds were ideal places to discuss business.More than a dozen hunting grounds held tens of thousands of wild animals.Selina spent most of her time walking the grounds every day, and Adrian was at her side nearly every one of them.Because of that welcome party, everyone in the family knew who she was.In her last life, she had given up this chance for Susie. This time, she meant to hold on with both hands, and that determination brought pressure with it.Selina moved out of Adrian's estate. She took one of the cabins on the grounds. She could get used to living anywhere, but Adrian thought it was beneath her.So he had the cabin rebuilt into a large house of her own, with a garden laid out in front. He even thought to hire a gardener to keep it up for her.Selina said, "You really didn't have to go to the trouble. I've slept und

Charles stood there, stunned.Every word of Susie's accusation was correct. He was the one who had disregarded Selina's feelings first and gone to Sicily on his own authority to bring Susie back to the estate. He was the one who had held Susie in the bedroom. If he had listened to Selina, or cared at all how she felt, it would never have come to this between them. They wouldn't be divorced.Charles crouched on the floor and broke down sobbing. It was the first time Susie had seen him like this, and something like pity rose in her. She walked over slowly and put her arms around him."Don't be like this. Selina's gone, and she isn't coming back. I really do love you. We'll have a good life together."Whatever she could give you, I can give you too."Susie brought her face close to his.Charles bit down on his lip and swallowed the tears back. He looked up at Susie, and the pain in him only deepened. Then all at once he pushed her away, stood up, and left without a word. When he returned

The circle opened, and Susie looked up. Her eyes met Charles's.He opened his mouth to speak, but Susie looked away and smiled at the partners. "If everyone's agreed, come into the office and we'll sign."The partners laughed and crowded toward his office one after another, satisfaction all over their faces.Charles stood frozen. Susie having solved the problem gave him no pleasure at all. If anything, he had hoped to see Selina when the crowd parted.Susie said, smiling, "I got it handled, so relax. And they're locked in with us for the next five years.""How did you do it?" Charles asked absently."You'll find out." Susie winked at him.Charles did not press her and changed the subject. "It isn't safe for you at the estate now. I'm busy, and I can't get free to protect you, so I'll have someone find you a house out in the country. You'll be safer there."Susie's hand stopped in midair. When she raised her eyes again, she said, "All right. I'll come back once Bruno is gone."Charles d
