Chapter 1: The News

AURORA .

“Popular tech mogul Bryan Liam was found dead in cold blood in his hotel room in Paris. Police say it might be the result of a botched robbery…”

The voice from the television kept going, but those were the only words echoing in my head.

That was my husband, Bryan Liam.

The man I had been married to for four years.

The same man I had escorted to the airport.

He was dead.

The glass I was holding slipped from my hand and shattered on the floor. Everything blurred. I saw flashes of my nanny rushing to grab my son, his piercing cries echoing in my ears, but it was all distant—like my world had paused.

And then suddenly, I screamed.

“Bryan! No, no way..” I cried at the top of my voice, the reality of the news hitting me like a blow to the chest.

“Ma’am, please calm down,” my nanny pleaded, rocking my son in one arm. My eyes fixed on him , my poor baby, just three years old, now without a father. I looked back at the TV. Bryan’s face was everywhere.

Bryan Liam.

Our marriage had started as a joke , he was the perfect suitor my father found for me, and because I had no other option, i was recovering from a heart break and i wanted to heal so i married him to revenge my Ex but he didn’t seem to care . I had no regrets. He was an amazing husband, sweet, perfect. He treated me like a princess. People said it was because he was a loyal godson to my father, but I doubted that. Bryan was in love with me, and I had started to love him too.

Then we had our son, Jake. He was just like his father, bringing joy into our home. He had turned four recently. Bryan couldn’t make it to his birthday, but he promised to make it up to us, he booked a family trip for next week.

Now he was gone.

“Mommy…” Jake cried, gripping the hem of my dress. My legs gave way, and I collapsed onto the couch, screaming and shouting in pain.

“Rosa! Take Jake inside now,” a voice called from behind. It was my mother. She rushed over, wrapping me in her arms and stroking my head.

“Shhh, it’s okay, honey. It’s okay. I know how it feels…” she whispered.

Her words made it worse. She was reminding me that I was now a widow, like her. My father had died two years after I married Bryan. That year was one of the worst of our lives ,we lost almost everything. Society abandoned us. A once-powerful family reduced to nothing without its head. It had affected my marriage deeply—but that was a story for another day.

“You cannot let the Wolfe family see you like this. They’ll use it to their advantage.”

“I don’t give a fvck, Mother! My husband just died! Am I not allowed to mourn him? He’s everywhere on the news, my husband butchered like he was nothing and you’re here telling me not to be vulnerable because of what? His family? I don’t care!” I yelled.

She quickly covered my mouth with her palm.

“Be quiet, Aurora. You of all people should know better. If you want to mourn your husband, do it but don’t act weak in front of those people. They don’t like you, and they—”

“Mother! Please, stop!” I cut her off before she could finish. “I don’t want to hear this again. You, of all people, should know what it feels like to lose a husband. And in that manner? Imagine finding out through the TV that your husband is dead not even a phone call from his family”

“They don’t see you as his wife. Why would they inform you? You lost that position when your father died. And now that Bryan is dead, they’ll kick you out of this house and take everything he owned unless you stand up for yourself.”

My mother was right. When my father died, the dynamics in my marriage shifted. The Wolfe family constantly maltreated me. I was bullied. Bryan was the only reason I stayed because he loved me and protected me. The Wolfes cut me off entirely, and only Bryan and Jake were allowed at family gatherings. Bryan would go with our son but never with me. He didn’t want me to be treated poorly by his family.

At first, it was a problem in our marriage, but I stopped caring. I didn’t mind being the outcast. But now that Bryan was gone, I had no shield. These people would come for me.

“Do you see what I’m talking about now?” my mother asked.

I stayed quiet, my mind spinning with thoughts of what would come next. Tears kept rolling down my cheeks.

“This wasn’t what you promised me… You promised to always protect me. Bryan, you promised you’d always be there. I don’t know what I’ll do without you…”

“Oh, Jesus…” my mother sighed.

I ignored her. She had the heart of a stone what she called “the perfect match for the Wolfe.” I was nothing like that. I was weak, fragile. When my father died, my mother didn’t shed a single tear in public, even though I knew she cried in private. That’s what she wanted from me now. But I couldn’t control my emotions.

“ Mom…Let me mourn my husband in peace.”

When I turned, my breath caught.

It was my mother-in-law.

And from the look in her eyes, I knew my mourning had only just begun.

I couldn’t just sit back and do nothing, especially after Bryan’s mother announced on the company platform that I was the new owner. I knew this was a trap, but I was willingly falling into it.For someone who said she didn’t want to involve Damon in her life anymore, he was the first person I called and that was only because I needed advice. I just wanted his help, not friendship or whatever that was. I needed professional legal advice. I know i told him to stay out of my path but he was the one who titled himself as “my legal guardian “ and if i needed help _ Legal help , i could go to him right ? afterall he wasn’t just my ex fiancee , he was a lawyer too , a good one at that . “So… you’ve decided to accept it?” Emilia asked, an eyebrow raised and her eyes searching mine. I nodded. My mom scof

  • My Husband Faked His Death, So I Moved on    LEGAL GUIDE

22: LEGAL GUIDE. DAMONI was checking my phone every minute to see if Rora had responded to my offer, but it was still left on read. Maybe I was doing too much. Maybe she didn’t want me around and it was making her uncomfortable. But I had no intentions of getting back together or letting my actions be mistaken for affection. I was just repaying an old debt.“You haven’t touched your food…” Elsa spoke.I turned. She was seated opposite me, stuffing her face with pancakes. I was beginning to regret letting her stay with me during weekends, it only meant she was going to be in my business.“I don’t eat breakfast.”“Well, good for you. It tastes good.”I pushed the chair back and stood, heading to my room.“I called Rora…”Elsa’s words made me pause mid-step. I waited for her to continue, and when she didn’t, I turned back to the dining area.“You guys spoke? How was it? Did you plan on meeting?”“No. It wasn’t even long enough to plan a meeting,” she scoffed, her face hardening.“What

21: Trouble in a not so ParadiseAURORAMy morning alarm went off for the third time, and I was about to hit snooze when my mom barged in and threw a pillow at me. I stretched, trying to get up, but my whole body ached.“You have a visitor!”“What? It’s so early in the morning,” I yawned, turning to the other side of the bed and covering myself with my duvet.“It’s 11 a.m. What do you mean too early?” my mom yelled, dragging the duvet off me. I tried to grab it back, but she threw it to the other side of the room. I rolled my eyes and stood up.“I can’t wait to leave your house,” I said jokingly, and she burst into laughter.“Me too. Emilia is in the living room,” she said as she walked off. How could she just drop a bombshell like that and leave? Emilia? I jumped out of bed and ran to the living room. Emilia was back? She had taken a long leave when she got married, and a few weeks later, I was thrown into prison. I hadn’t seen her since then, though she always sent messages when I

  • My Husband Faked His Death, So I Moved on    A Heart Like Stone

20: A Heart Like StoneAURORAMy mom chasing me out of the house was not the reaction I had expected. There was no way I could talk her out of it especially after I had embarrassed her like that. For someone who valued her ego so much, I could only imagine what it must have felt like when Bryan’s mom called.“I just wanted to see my son. I never knew things would escalate…” I muttered, my head bowed to the floor.“He doesn’t want to see you! What part of that do you not understand? I told you! Didn’t I?” she yelled.“I just wanted to see him…” I repeated, doing my best to hold back my tears.“What is your problem? Haven’t you suffered enough? Why can’t you come back to your senses? I told you I was going to handle it! You just got out of prison, and you went there? Didn’t Damon tell you about the court order?” She paused, then turned to Damon.“Didn’t you tell her they now have custody and she can only see him when they permit it?”“I did,” he replied, his voice barely above a whispe

  • My Husband Faked His Death, So I Moved on    Walk Of Shame

19: Walk of ShameAURORAMy mom was probably still sleeping. I prayed I wasn’t wrong. I turned to Damon, who was focused on the road, refusing to make eye contact with me.“You can stop me at that drugstore over there. I need to get an ointment for my wound, and I’ll walk home. My house is just a few walks away from there,” I murmured, fixing my eyes outside the window.“I’ll take you home. Stay in the car, I’ll get you the drugs, and we can go from there.”“No! I don’t need your help, and I’d appreciate it if you don’t stress it. With that being said, please stop the car!”“Okay,” he said immediately, and the car came to a halt.I was shocked he didn’t press on. He switched off the engine and let me out. Before I could say anything else, he drove off.“Uhmm… that was quick.” I scoffed. My forehead had stopped bleeding, but I needed ointment for it and maybe pain relief, because my ankle was hurting. I started limping toward the store when I suddenly realized I was walking into a sto

  • My Husband Faked His Death, So I Moved on    Your Side

Chapter 18: Your SideDAMON“Whose side are you on, Damon?”Her eyes met mine; she was searching for answers. My heart spoke, but my mouth didn’t. My heart was racing; I took a deep breath but didn’t respond.“Your side. I am on your side. If I wasn’t, I wouldn’t have tried to get you out, I said in my head, but I didn’t tell her.”“You should go home and change,” I said, looking away. Her body was still on mine; I cleared my throat and she helped herself up.“You are bleeding. We should get you cleaned up and take you home.”“I asked you a question. Don’t try to change the topic. I am aware I’m soaked and bleeding. You haven’t answered my question.”I took a deep breath, avoiding her eyes. I stood up. It wasn’t easy to say what my heart wanted to say. I didn’t want to complicate things further for her. What she wanted me to confirm would make everything messy.“I am on nobody’s side. What you did was embarrassing and uncalled for, and that’s why I asked you to leave and took you out
