Chapter 2

Author: Fish Paste
Perhaps it was my cold laugh that finally set Calvin off. In a burst of anger, he slammed the glass to the floor.

“Can’t you be more forgiving? I fell for you because you were kindhearted. How did you turn into someone so small-minded? I’m only helping my sister-in-law. What are you imagining in that head of yours?”

“Calvin, any brother-in-law who goes this far would make people suspicious.”

His body stiffened, and he glared at me with rage. “Not everyone’s mind is as filthy as yours!”

I had nothing left to say. I turned back to the bedroom and pulled out the suitcase I had already packed.

He blocked the doorway. There was finally a hint of panic flashing across his eyes.

“Yvette, I was wrong. Please, don’t go…

“I know I messed up, but I’ll change. From now on, I’ll do whatever you want… okay, honey?”

For the first time, Calvin was truly desperate. He clung to my waist, buried his face in my shoulder. His voice trembled on the edge of tears.

“I promised your mother I’d take good care of you. Just give me one more chance, I swear I’ll make her proud. I know you’ve suffered all these years. I’ll make it up to you.”

The word suffered broke something inside me. I started sobbing uncontrollably.

So, he did know how much I had endured? Then why had he always accused me of being unreasonable?

My body shook as I beat my fists against his chest.

“This is your last chance. If you ever do this again, I really will divorce you.”

However, the very next morning, Lexi rang, sobbing on the other end of the line.

“Calvin, Ben won’t listen to me. Please talk to him.”

I stared at Calvin, holding my breath, and it was not until he refused Lexi that I finally felt the weight lift off me.

Pleased with himself, he looked at me like he was expecting praise. I wrapped my arms around his head, kissed him on both cheeks, and said, “Good job! That’s how it should be.”

“All right, whatever my wife says.”

Nevertheless, not long after, Lexi called again, sobbing into the phone. Her crying grated on my nerves.

Just as I was about to tell him to hang up, Calvin gave me a troubled look.

“Yvette, I’ll just go over there for a bit. I’ll be back soon.”

Of course.

The sharp sting in my chest made my eyes burn.

“Do you remember what you said last night?”

“I remember. I’ll be back soon. I’ll give Benjamin a good lesson, so he stops bothering us, all right?”

He had said things like this many times before. Never once had he kept his word. All he had done was make my forgiveness worthless.

“Calvin, I’m pregnant.” I pulled his hand to my stomach.

“Really?” His voice carried doubt.

I nodded, but he only gave me a stern look, then said with crushing disappointment,

“Yvette, if you don’t want me to go, just say so. Don’t make up lies.”

All of a sudden, I could not help but find it ironic. Walking to the door, I swung it open.

“Then get out.”

He looked at me with that same mixture of disappointment and pleading, as though he was begging me not to be unreasonable.

Clinging to the last shred of hope, I spoke again, “I really am pregnant. We can go to the hospital right now to check. But if you walk out that door today, don’t ever expect me to give you another chance.”

He opened his mouth like he wanted to say something, but in the end, he said nothing. Instead, he called his assistant to come watch over me.

Not wanting to make his assistant uncomfortable, I went straight to the study, turned on my laptop, and started looking for a divorce lawyer.

This time, Calvin came home faster than usual. However, to my shock, I heard voices outside. They were Lexi’s and Benjamin’s.

Calvin brought his sister-in-law and nephew back home.

I thought all the public backlash and the problems at Calvin’s company would keep him too busy to bother me.Who knew he still had the energy to stake out my apartment, calling me from different numbers. One day, he even disguised himself as a delivery guy. When I realized it was him, I slammed the door, but he blocked it with his hand. His hand bore a deep scrape, yet he held firm.“Yvette, Lexi, and I have already paid the price. When will you calm down? Isn’t it time to come back?”I felt disgusted and flung the food at his head.A few years in prison, a demotion—such a paltry price is nothing compared to what she deserved!“I do not love you anymore, Calvin. Just seeing you makes me sick. I am not doing this to vent, I am doing it for revenge, for Mom misjudging you, for the child I lost, and for myself!”Calvin replied in a gentle faint voice, “But I did not do anything to hurt you. I have always loved only you.”Men with low moral awareness would always think they were

Calvin rushed back as soon as he got the news. Lexi clung to his sleeve when she saw him, tears streaming down her face.“Calvin, Yvette, she falsely accused me, hit me, and fabricated evidence to have me locked up.”I let out a cold sneer. “Oh really? And the video showing Benjamin putting medicine in the milk—was that faked too? Why don’t you admit the truth now, in front of the police and Calvin? Where is that same arrogance you had before?”Calvin stayed silent. Then, in the stunned look on Lexi’s face, he pried her hand away. “You killed my child and almost ruined my marriage. Lexi, whatever punishment Yvette wants to mete out to you, I will not interfere.”Lexi’s eyes went wide. She took a step back with disbelief written all over her face. “Then what about us? I did all of this for our future! You have feelings for me too, don’t you? We kissed last time, remember?”Calvin replied in a faint voice, “That was an accident. Any concern I showed you was because of my brother’s r

I had secretly set up a camera in the kitchen, capturing Benjamin putting the medicine into my milk. However, I did not confront him directly. Instead, I pretended to catch him in the act when he tried again and confronted him.Benjamin was terrified. He cried and called Lexi. Soon, she arrived, claiming she was taking him away. I chased after them, determined to get to the bottom of what had happened.Calvin was not home. Facing me alone, Lexi dropped all pretenses, crossing her arms and put on an arrogant look.“You are saying my son drugged you? Do you even have proof? Accusing a child? You are truly cruel!”“I may not have proof, but Lexi, can you look at yourself in the mirror? Did you have the child slip miscarriage medicine into my milk? No wonder I miscarried so easily last time. It was clearly your scheme!”I could not hold back my tears anymore, shouting that I would fight her. Suddenly, Benjamin ran into me, hitting my stomach. I instinctively clutched my belly and fell

Two days later, I saw Lexi’s post on social media. At a stunning resort, she took a selfie wearing the exact same necklace Calvin had given me last time. Behind her, perfectly caught in the frame, were Calvin and Benjamin. The caption was: [A lovely family getaway.]I called Calvin to ask where he was.“Benjamin’s school organized a spring outing. I am at Stars and Moon Resort. Yvette, I am sorry I did not tell you beforehand. I did not know Lexi would be here too. She had called earlier asking me to accompany Benjamin, and she said she would not go herself.”“It is fine. I was just checking. When it is over, bring Benjamin straight to our place. Last time your mom said we should take care of him, and I have thought it over. I would like to spend some time with him first.”“You really aren’t mad?” Calvin asked again, feeling uneasy.I repeated calmly that I was not mad, but anyone who knew me would understand that the calmer I seemed, the angrier I was.By evening, Calvin broug

The more I thought about it, the more foolish my past self-seemed. Anger devoured my reason, and I could not take it anymore. I slapped Calvin three times in a row.I put all my strength into it. Each blow landed sharp and hard, twisting his face to the side.“Is that enough? Or do you want a few more?”I did not answer. I turned to leave. He gripped my wrist so tightly I could not pull away.“Lily’s surgery failed, someone died. Yvonne’s project is pulling in investors. And your father’s stolen paintings…”He stopped and met my gaze.It was a threat. I had no family left, only my two closest friends and those paintings full of memories.I thought of the message Lily had sent me moments ago. After a pause, I replied, “Fine. But I hope you can keep the promises you made me.”Calvin nodded eagerly.I secretly let out a snort. He would not be able to, and neither would Lexi. For the next stretch of time, Calvin acted like he had set himself a mission. He woke early to make brea

Calvin took my painting, carried off my cat, and threatened me with my friends’ jobs and lives if I dared leave him, if I dared file for divorce.Sometimes he acted with modesty and respect, while at other moments his obsession grew strikingly strong and worrisome.I packed my suitcase right in front of him, then he would unpack it piece by piece right in front of me.Eventually, I stopped wanting to take anything at all. Not the painting, and not the cat.I had just gotten into the car to leave when Calvin came after me.Dressed in black, his brows knotted tight, he looked more terrifying than I had ever seen him. I braced for an outburst, but instead he swallowed his anger and said, “You will not get away. I told you to give me one more month and watch how I prove myself.”He grabbed my wrist. I wrenched free. “Get off me! Your promises are nothing but lies!”I could not bear to hear him beg for another one last chance again. Over the years I have heard it so often that the wo
