Chapter 3

Author: Bright Lights
"No matter what you think of Quinn, she's my wife. She's the person I'm going to spend the rest of my life with. If you treat her like this again, I won't come home anymore."

Back then, I had been the one to talk Caleb down, telling him not to fight with his parents over me. If everything on the table was something I didn't like, I could just eat a little and grab something else later.

But today, faced with the same deliberate favoritism and another table full of food I hated, Caleb didn't say a word.

Maya, on the other hand, only had to mention disliking a dish once, and it never appeared on the table again.

Caleb even served food onto her plate.

"This is your favorite. My mom made it especially for you."

Maya took a bite of eggplant and smiled. "Thanks, Mom. After all these years, your cooking is still what I've missed the most."

Diane beamed as she started reminiscing about funny things Caleb and Maya had done when they were young. Maya called her and Mark "Mom" and "Dad" as naturally as if she'd never stopped being part of the family.

Caleb laughed so hard his stomach hurt, chiming in every now and then.

They looked like they were the ones who made up the real family while I looked like some outsider who had shown up for a free meal.

Maya had eaten with us at home the year before too.

Back then, Caleb would hold my hand and pull me into the conversation so I wouldn't feel left out.

Now he only looked at me with regret and murmured, "Maya really does understand me better than Quinn does..."

Mark had been drinking. Eventually, he slapped a hand against the table and said remorsefully, "I never should've stopped you two from dating when you were young. I made you miss your chance with each other.

"I regret breaking you up and leaving you stuck in an unhappy marriage."

Caleb said nothing. He just lowered his head and kept eating.

Everyone at the table acted as though I wasn't there.

That was my last straw. I couldn't force down another bite.

"You don't have to wait for some future chance. Once Caleb and I are divorced, the two of them can finally be together."

I got up to leave, and Diane hurried after me.

"They were only joking. Don't take it seriously. It's not often the whole family gets together like this, so don't ruin the mood."

People tended to say what they really thought after a few drinks. I knew Mark had meant every word.

And I meant mine too.

"No. You four make up the real family."

I went upstairs and started packing my things.

The clothes in my closet were already gone.

Fortunately, I'd hidden my important documents in the back of a cabinet, and every one of them was still there.

Caleb came after me and blocked the doorway, looking genuinely anxious for the first time.

"You're really going to divorce me?"

"Of course."

"I don't believe you. You're just angry. You're saying this because you want to hurt me."

"I'm not angry," I said calmly.

Caleb's eyes went wide with fury.

"Fine, then go! And once you leave, don't come back!"

I walked straight past him.

For once, Caleb and I agreed on something.

I had no intention of ever coming back.

...

When I showed up at my parents' house with my things, they asked what I planned to do next.

I kept unpacking as I answered. "An old classmate of mine has a startup. She wants me to come work with her, so I'm going to resign from Caleb's company."

In the past, my parents would have tried to talk me out of it. They had always believed a married couple should work and build a life together. That was what made a home feel like a home.

But after what they'd seen from Caleb, they never said anything like that again.

Now that I had clearly made up my mind to leave him behind, they supported me completely.

"That's a good thing, sweetheart," my mom, Lidna Grant, said. "I support you. Once you're settled, your dad and I can move closer to you."

My dad, Robert Grant, nodded. "Don't worry about anything else. Home is wherever your family is."

I tried to hold it together, but my eyes still burned.

"Okay. Once I'm settled, I'll bring you both over."

Their support filled some of the emptiness inside me. With them behind me, I finally felt steadier about what came next.

The next morning, I went to work as usual.

I returned to my desk and was just about to submit my resignation when I noticed something strange about the atmosphere in the office.

People were huddled together, whispering over some piece of gossip. Every so often, their eyes flicked toward me.

But whenever I looked up, they immediately looked away.

That alone was enough to tell me what kind of gossip they were spreading.

Whether we wanted them or not, Caleb kept forcing gifts on us.When I took Mom and Dad on a trip, he shamelessly insisted on coming along. But on the way there, he got a phone call and immediately became anxious."I'm sorry. Maya says my dad is sick, so I have to go back. Wait for me. When I get back, I'll keep making it up to you."Caleb rushed home, only to find Mark sitting comfortably at the table with a drink while Maya helped Diane prep vegetables in the kitchen. His temper exploded."Maya, what the hell is going on?"Maya stammered, unable to answer, but Mark cut in coldly."That's enough. Don't blame her. This was my idea. If I hadn't lied to get you back here, were you planning to keep following Quinn around forever and ignore both the company and your family?"Diane tried to reason with him."Listen to me, Caleb. Quinn divorced you. You need to let her go. You can't force someone to come back when she doesn't want to. Besides, Maya is still here. She's a good girl too."The f

"You were the one who swore Quinn was just throwing a little tantrum and would never actually leave you. You said no matter how angry you made her, all you had to do was apologize, act miserable for a while, and she'd forgive you.""This was your idea from the beginning, and now you're blaming us? Sure, we egged you on, but you're the one who actually hurt her.""You were the one who went on dates with Maya and deliberately sent Quinn pictures.""You and Maya were the ones who framed Quinn as the other woman at work and drove her out of the company.""Every single one of those things was your choice. Don't put this on us."Caleb pulled the blanket over his head, overwhelmed by grief."Get out. All of you, get out!""Caleb..." Maya ventured cautiously."You too! Get out! I don't want to see any of you. Not one of you!"Caleb threw back the covers and started hurling whatever he could reach at them. His friends fled the room, cursing under their breath, and even Maya was driven out with

I shoved Caleb out into the hall and slammed the door behind him.He stayed there with his back against it, tears slipping down his face and into his mouth. They tasted bitter, carrying all the regret that had come too late."Quinn Grant, don't you love me?"I didn't answer.I had loved him. I wouldn't have dated him or married him if I hadn't. But even the deepest love could only survive so many tests, so many lies.Thunder rolled outside, and dark clouds covered the sky, as bleak as Caleb's mood.He lingered outside the apartment for a long time. Then, watching the rain come down in sheets, he seemed to come to a decision. He took the elevator downstairs and positioned himself where he knew I could see him from the window. He didn't bring an umbrella.Within moments, the downpour had soaked him through. Rain and tears streamed down his face until he could barely keep his eyes open. His friends stood in the rain shouting at him."Caleb, come inside! You're going to make yourself sick.

I had spent nearly every moment of our marriage dealing with Caleb's ridiculous games. He provoked me again and again until I was constantly angry, and even my health had started to suffer. It always felt as though something tight and heavy was lodged in my chest.Only after the divorce did that pressure finally ease. Even my body felt lighter.Maybe marriage itself wasn't the problem.Maybe I'd simply married the wrong person.I shook my head, ready to put that source of misery out of my mind, when his voice came from the front door."Mom, Dad, is Quinn home? I need to talk to her."He had brought a whole group of friends with him, though for once, none of them said a word. The moment Mom saw him, her expression darkened.Dad sat on the couch and waved his cane toward the door. "Quinn already divorced you. Stop calling us Mom and Dad. We're not your parents!"Caleb stood awkwardly in the doorway. When Mom made no move to let him in, he shamelessly squeezed past her anyway."Mom, Dad,

"Divorce papers?"The moment Caleb saw what was inside the envelope, he froze. His friends fell silent too, staring at the papers in disbelief."Those have to be fake, right?" someone muttered.Caleb's face had gone pale."No. That's impossible. Quinn would never divorce me."We love each other. How could she bear to leave me?"No. There's no way."Seeing him so shaken was clearly unfamiliar territory for his friends, and they immediately tried to reassure him."Maybe they are fake. Maybe she's playing hard to get and trying to make you panic.""Exactly. We've been messing with her all this time, so maybe she's decided to turn it around on you.""Don't fall for it. If you cave now, she'll have the upper hand in your marriage."They kept talking, one after another, but Caleb wasn't listening anymore. All he could think about was how strange I'd been lately. He had deliberately crossed one line after another. In the past, I would have lost my temper long before this. I would have fought

But anger smoldering in my chest refused to go away.Maya stopped messaging Dad, but she started sending me photos of herself and Caleb looking intimately close.[Quinn Grant, you're the only idiot who ever thought this was a game.][Caleb never forgot me. I had called Caleb, but he told me he was away on a business trip. According to the photos, he'd actually been celebrating Maya's birthday with her.Last month, on my birthday, he stood me up. He claimed a client had called him away at the last minute and he couldn't get out of it.
