Chapter 5

Penulis: Bright Lights
But anger smoldering in my chest refused to go away.

Maya stopped messaging Dad, but she started sending me photos of herself and Caleb looking intimately close.

[Quinn Grant, you're the only idiot who ever thought this was a game.]

[Caleb never forgot me. We got back together a long time ago. All those times he made you angry, he was just messing with you.]

One photo after another came through, each stamped with a date and time.

When I compared them to what I remembered, the truth became impossible to ignore.

Two months ago, I'd been so sick with a fever that I could barely stand. I had called Caleb, but he told me he was away on a business trip. According to the photos, he'd actually been celebrating Maya's birthday with her.

Last month, on my birthday, he stood me up. He claimed a client had called him away at the last minute and he couldn't get out of it. In reality, he'd been at the movies with Maya.

Then, just last week, on our anniversary, he'd told me something had gone wrong with a project and promised we'd celebrate another day.

That time, he had actually been taking care of Maya because she was sick.

Taken together, there was no denying it. Caleb cared more about his first love than he did about his own wife.

I'd always believed he simply enjoyed provoking me. I had believed all his talk about making me angry to prove how much I loved him.

Now I finally understood that those explanations had been lies. He had been playing me all along.

And like an idiot, I'd let him do it for years. I'd actually convinced myself he loved me, that there was nothing wrong with his feelings, only with the twisted way he expressed them.

It was almost laughable.

Right after Maya finished sending the photos, one of Caleb's friends forwarded me screenshots from their group chat.

[Quinn, hang in there a little longer. At least wait until I win my bet before you lose your temper and give in. Otherwise I'm going to lose an entire month's paycheck.]

Among the messages was a video montage of all the times I'd lost my temper. The clips played on a loop, and beneath them was an empty space clearly reserved for my next outburst.

Someone had even asked Caleb whether he was worried I might actually leave.

His answer had been completely certain.

[She won't. She can't bear to leave me. She's just gotten older and more temperamental. Let her carry on for a few more days. Once I give her an excuse to come back, she'll come running.]

I opened a drawer and found two copies of a divorce agreement inside.

Caleb had drawn them up the year before just to make me angry.

At the time, I'd completely lost my temper. He'd happily wrapped his arms around me afterward and apologized, saying that if I was that furious, I had to be hopelessly in love with him.

I'd been too stunned to answer. Later, I'd left the papers at my parents' house and forgotten to throw them away.

Now they were finally useful.

On the day Dad was discharged from the hospital, Caleb sent me a video of himself on a date with Maya, clearly trying to provoke me again.

[Quinn Grant, if you're angry, I'll stop playing these games from now on.]

I ignored him and focused on spending time with my parents.

When Caleb still didn't get a reply, he finally started getting anxious.

His friends stepped in with more ideas, telling him he needed to push harder if he wanted a reaction out of me.

Eventually, they convinced him to take wedding portraits with Maya.

"Caleb, trust me. This will definitely work. No woman can stand watching her husband take wedding pictures with someone else. She'll lose it."

Caleb wasn't entirely convinced, but he went along with it.

He was just about to send me the photos when a courier called out to him.

"Mr. Jones? I have a delivery for you. Ms. Grant specifically requested that these documents be handed directly to you because they're important."

The moment his friends heard that, they burst out laughing.

"See? We told you she wouldn't be able to hold out!"

"Come on, Caleb. Guess what's inside."

Caleb was thinking exactly the same thing they were.

Full of anticipation, he opened the envelope.

The moment he saw the finalized divorce papers, he froze.

The package slipped from his hand and fell silently to the ground, just as quietly as I had walked out of his life.

Whether we wanted them or not, Caleb kept forcing gifts on us.When I took Mom and Dad on a trip, he shamelessly insisted on coming along. But on the way there, he got a phone call and immediately became anxious."I'm sorry. Maya says my dad is sick, so I have to go back. Wait for me. When I get back, I'll keep making it up to you."Caleb rushed home, only to find Mark sitting comfortably at the table with a drink while Maya helped Diane prep vegetables in the kitchen. His temper exploded."Maya, what the hell is going on?"Maya stammered, unable to answer, but Mark cut in coldly."That's enough. Don't blame her. This was my idea. If I hadn't lied to get you back here, were you planning to keep following Quinn around forever and ignore both the company and your family?"Diane tried to reason with him."Listen to me, Caleb. Quinn divorced you. You need to let her go. You can't force someone to come back when she doesn't want to. Besides, Maya is still here. She's a good girl too."The f

"You were the one who swore Quinn was just throwing a little tantrum and would never actually leave you. You said no matter how angry you made her, all you had to do was apologize, act miserable for a while, and she'd forgive you.""This was your idea from the beginning, and now you're blaming us? Sure, we egged you on, but you're the one who actually hurt her.""You were the one who went on dates with Maya and deliberately sent Quinn pictures.""You and Maya were the ones who framed Quinn as the other woman at work and drove her out of the company.""Every single one of those things was your choice. Don't put this on us."Caleb pulled the blanket over his head, overwhelmed by grief."Get out. All of you, get out!""Caleb..." Maya ventured cautiously."You too! Get out! I don't want to see any of you. Not one of you!"Caleb threw back the covers and started hurling whatever he could reach at them. His friends fled the room, cursing under their breath, and even Maya was driven out with

I shoved Caleb out into the hall and slammed the door behind him.He stayed there with his back against it, tears slipping down his face and into his mouth. They tasted bitter, carrying all the regret that had come too late."Quinn Grant, don't you love me?"I didn't answer.I had loved him. I wouldn't have dated him or married him if I hadn't. But even the deepest love could only survive so many tests, so many lies.Thunder rolled outside, and dark clouds covered the sky, as bleak as Caleb's mood.He lingered outside the apartment for a long time. Then, watching the rain come down in sheets, he seemed to come to a decision. He took the elevator downstairs and positioned himself where he knew I could see him from the window. He didn't bring an umbrella.Within moments, the downpour had soaked him through. Rain and tears streamed down his face until he could barely keep his eyes open. His friends stood in the rain shouting at him."Caleb, come inside! You're going to make yourself sick.

I had spent nearly every moment of our marriage dealing with Caleb's ridiculous games. He provoked me again and again until I was constantly angry, and even my health had started to suffer. It always felt as though something tight and heavy was lodged in my chest.Only after the divorce did that pressure finally ease. Even my body felt lighter.Maybe marriage itself wasn't the problem.Maybe I'd simply married the wrong person.I shook my head, ready to put that source of misery out of my mind, when his voice came from the front door."Mom, Dad, is Quinn home? I need to talk to her."He had brought a whole group of friends with him, though for once, none of them said a word. The moment Mom saw him, her expression darkened.Dad sat on the couch and waved his cane toward the door. "Quinn already divorced you. Stop calling us Mom and Dad. We're not your parents!"Caleb stood awkwardly in the doorway. When Mom made no move to let him in, he shamelessly squeezed past her anyway."Mom, Dad,

"Divorce papers?"The moment Caleb saw what was inside the envelope, he froze. His friends fell silent too, staring at the papers in disbelief."Those have to be fake, right?" someone muttered.Caleb's face had gone pale."No. That's impossible. Quinn would never divorce me."We love each other. How could she bear to leave me?"No. There's no way."Seeing him so shaken was clearly unfamiliar territory for his friends, and they immediately tried to reassure him."Maybe they are fake. Maybe she's playing hard to get and trying to make you panic.""Exactly. We've been messing with her all this time, so maybe she's decided to turn it around on you.""Don't fall for it. If you cave now, she'll have the upper hand in your marriage."They kept talking, one after another, but Caleb wasn't listening anymore. All he could think about was how strange I'd been lately. He had deliberately crossed one line after another. In the past, I would have lost my temper long before this. I would have fought
