Chapter 4

Author: Bright Lights
I had no idea what they were saying, but I couldn't bring myself to care. I was leaving soon anyway. They could gossip all they wanted.

Then Maya came charging over. Before I could react, she dumped an entire cup of hot coffee over my head.

"You shameless bitch! You went after my boyfriend? I'm going to kill you!"

Her boyfriend?

I was still trying to figure out what she was talking about when Maya launched into another stream of abuse. It took me a moment to realize what she was accusing me of.

According to her, I was the one who had come between her and Caleb.

The sheer hypocrisy almost left me speechless.

Once I understood what was happening, I looked past her and saw Caleb standing nearby. He watched Maya insult me and our employees point and whisper, yet he made no move to stop any of it.

Caleb and I had kept our marriage private at work. I had been beside him from the beginning, helping him build this company step by step. He'd thanked me more times than I could count, and during the hardest years, when we struggled together, he'd sworn that one day he would make it all up to me.

Now he simply stood there while Maya falsely branded me the other woman.

I wasn't about to let everyone think I was someone's mistress, so I pulled out our marriage certificate.

"You've got it backward. You're the other woman. Caleb and I got married a long time ago. We're husband and wife."

The employees froze. A moment later, the whispering started again.

Maya didn't look worried in the slightest. She snatched the certificate from my hand, tore it to pieces, and tossed them into the trash.

"That thing is fake. I have proof that you've been harassing Caleb."

She immediately posted on her social media feed.

The first video was a compilation of every time I'd lost my temper. Maya had cut away all the context, leaving only clips of me furious and out of control, with nothing showing what had happened beforehand.

Then she posted another video.

This one showed her at the house, calling Diane and Mark "Mom" and "Dad."

"Caleb already introduced me to his parents a long time ago. I even call them Mom and Dad now.

"You're the one who's been using your position at work to threaten him and refuse to leave him alone."

That was enough for the employees.

"She's completely unhinged. No wonder Mr. Jones has always had such a bad relationship with her. So Quinn's been harassing him this whole time."

"She thinks being good at her job gives her the right to threaten him? That's disgusting."

Still, Caleb said nothing.

Instead, he quietly took out his phone and turned on the camera, waiting to capture the moment I finally snapped.

All at once, a wave of exhaustion washed over me.

Soon enough, Caleb, Maya, and everyone else there would have nothing to do with me.

They could believe whatever they wanted. I couldn't be bothered to defend myself anymore.

"Fine. Believe whatever you want."

I ignored the rest and walked straight over to Caleb with my resignation letter.

He stared at it.

"What is this supposed to mean?"

"Nothing in particular. I'm tired, and I want some time off. Please approve my resignation, Mr. Jones."

"No. I won't."

I looked at him. "I thought I was supposedly harassing you. What, you don't want to let me go?"

"That's not..."

For once, Caleb seemed completely at a loss for words.

He looked ready to explain, but then he turned and saw the hurt expression on Maya's face.

His jaw tightened, and he signed the resignation.

I finished the rest of the exit paperwork without showing a trace of emotion.

Later, inside Caleb's office, he frowned as he tried to explain himself.

"Everything that happened just now was an act. All you have to do is admit you're angry. I'll go out there right now, explain everything, clear your name, and give you your job back."

I handed him the pen and smiled easily.

"I hope you two have a long and happy life together."

I ignored Caleb's furious reaction behind me, gathered my things, and went home.

I had barely reached the door when Mom messaged me, telling me to get to the hospital immediately.

Only after I arrived did I learn what had happened.

Maya had sent Dad the video of me being humiliated at work. His health was already poor, and the shock and anger had sent him straight to the hospital.

"Dad, forget about them," I said beside his bed, trying to comfort him. "We can't control what other people say. My life is only going to get better from here."

Whether we wanted them or not, Caleb kept forcing gifts on us.When I took Mom and Dad on a trip, he shamelessly insisted on coming along. But on the way there, he got a phone call and immediately became anxious."I'm sorry. Maya says my dad is sick, so I have to go back. Wait for me. When I get back, I'll keep making it up to you."Caleb rushed home, only to find Mark sitting comfortably at the table with a drink while Maya helped Diane prep vegetables in the kitchen. His temper exploded."Maya, what the hell is going on?"Maya stammered, unable to answer, but Mark cut in coldly."That's enough. Don't blame her. This was my idea. If I hadn't lied to get you back here, were you planning to keep following Quinn around forever and ignore both the company and your family?"Diane tried to reason with him."Listen to me, Caleb. Quinn divorced you. You need to let her go. You can't force someone to come back when she doesn't want to. Besides, Maya is still here. She's a good girl too."The f

"You were the one who swore Quinn was just throwing a little tantrum and would never actually leave you. You said no matter how angry you made her, all you had to do was apologize, act miserable for a while, and she'd forgive you.""This was your idea from the beginning, and now you're blaming us? Sure, we egged you on, but you're the one who actually hurt her.""You were the one who went on dates with Maya and deliberately sent Quinn pictures.""You and Maya were the ones who framed Quinn as the other woman at work and drove her out of the company.""Every single one of those things was your choice. Don't put this on us."Caleb pulled the blanket over his head, overwhelmed by grief."Get out. All of you, get out!""Caleb..." Maya ventured cautiously."You too! Get out! I don't want to see any of you. Not one of you!"Caleb threw back the covers and started hurling whatever he could reach at them. His friends fled the room, cursing under their breath, and even Maya was driven out with

I shoved Caleb out into the hall and slammed the door behind him.He stayed there with his back against it, tears slipping down his face and into his mouth. They tasted bitter, carrying all the regret that had come too late."Quinn Grant, don't you love me?"I didn't answer.I had loved him. I wouldn't have dated him or married him if I hadn't. But even the deepest love could only survive so many tests, so many lies.Thunder rolled outside, and dark clouds covered the sky, as bleak as Caleb's mood.He lingered outside the apartment for a long time. Then, watching the rain come down in sheets, he seemed to come to a decision. He took the elevator downstairs and positioned himself where he knew I could see him from the window. He didn't bring an umbrella.Within moments, the downpour had soaked him through. Rain and tears streamed down his face until he could barely keep his eyes open. His friends stood in the rain shouting at him."Caleb, come inside! You're going to make yourself sick.

I had spent nearly every moment of our marriage dealing with Caleb's ridiculous games. He provoked me again and again until I was constantly angry, and even my health had started to suffer. It always felt as though something tight and heavy was lodged in my chest.Only after the divorce did that pressure finally ease. Even my body felt lighter.Maybe marriage itself wasn't the problem.Maybe I'd simply married the wrong person.I shook my head, ready to put that source of misery out of my mind, when his voice came from the front door."Mom, Dad, is Quinn home? I need to talk to her."He had brought a whole group of friends with him, though for once, none of them said a word. The moment Mom saw him, her expression darkened.Dad sat on the couch and waved his cane toward the door. "Quinn already divorced you. Stop calling us Mom and Dad. We're not your parents!"Caleb stood awkwardly in the doorway. When Mom made no move to let him in, he shamelessly squeezed past her anyway."Mom, Dad,

"Divorce papers?"The moment Caleb saw what was inside the envelope, he froze. His friends fell silent too, staring at the papers in disbelief."Those have to be fake, right?" someone muttered.Caleb's face had gone pale."No. That's impossible. Quinn would never divorce me."We love each other. How could she bear to leave me?"No. There's no way."Seeing him so shaken was clearly unfamiliar territory for his friends, and they immediately tried to reassure him."Maybe they are fake. Maybe she's playing hard to get and trying to make you panic.""Exactly. We've been messing with her all this time, so maybe she's decided to turn it around on you.""Don't fall for it. If you cave now, she'll have the upper hand in your marriage."They kept talking, one after another, but Caleb wasn't listening anymore. All he could think about was how strange I'd been lately. He had deliberately crossed one line after another. In the past, I would have lost my temper long before this. I would have fought

But anger smoldering in my chest refused to go away.Maya stopped messaging Dad, but she started sending me photos of herself and Caleb looking intimately close.[Quinn Grant, you're the only idiot who ever thought this was a game.][Caleb never forgot me. We got back together a long time ago. All those times he made you angry, he was just messing with you.]One photo after another came through, each stamped with a date and time. When I compared them to what I remembered, the truth became impossible to ignore. Two months ago, I'd been so sick with a fever that I could barely stand. I had called Caleb, but he told me he was away on a business trip. According to the photos, he'd actually been celebrating Maya's birthday with her.Last month, on my birthday, he stood me up. He claimed a client had called him away at the last minute and he couldn't get out of it. In reality, he'd been at the movies with Maya. Then, just last week, on our anniversary, he'd told me something had gone wrong w
