Chapter 4

Penulis: Jack
Adrian came to the firm for the first time three days later.

He hadn't made an appointment and was stopped at the front desk.

I was coming out of the conference room when I spotted him standing in the reception area.

His suit was wrinkled, stubble darkened his jaw, and he looked like he'd aged years overnight.

The receptionist saw me and looked relieved. "Serena, Mr. Prescott says he absolutely has to see you."

I nodded. "Let him in."

Adrian followed me into my office.

The moment the door closed, he placed a document on my desk. "This is a written pledge from Vivian."

I didn't look at it. "What kind of pledge?"

"She's promised never to contact me again and never to bother you."

"Good."

Something finally sparked in Adrian's eyes. "Serena, we can start over."

I looked up at him. "Who's starting over with you?"

The spark died. "I've handled it."

"Handled what?"

"Vivian."

I leaned back in my chair. "Adrian, you still think the only problem is Vivian?"

I picked up the voice recorder from my desk. The casing was old, a chip of silver paint missing. It was the first birthday gift Adrian ever gave me.

Back then I'd just started practicing law, too broke to eat three meals a day.

He'd saved for three months to buy me this recorder.

He'd said, "Serena, every word you say in a courtroom deserves to be recorded."

I really did carry it into many cases after that, winning many of them. I also used it to capture many ugly truths.

Adrian saw the recorder and his expression stiffened. "What are you doing?"

I pressed play. First came Vivian's voice. "Mr. Prescott, aren't you afraid Serena will get angry?"

Then Adrian. "She won't actually go through with it."

Vivian gave a small laugh. "Why not?"

Adrian said, "She's too rational. Rational people calculate the cost before filing for divorce."

My finger pressed flat against the desk. The recording went on. Adrian continued, "The firm, the clients, the connections, they're all tied to me. She won't give that up."

Vivian asked, "Do you love her?"

A long stretch of silence, then Adrian said, "I did."

The office had gone unnervingly quiet. Adrian's face was drained of color. "When did you record this?"

I said, "The night of your birthday."

He jerked his head up.

I looked at him calmly. "After you left, Vivian came to find me. I turned on the recorder."

"Then you walked her back and had quite the chat in the hallway."

The recording played Adrian's voice again. "She'll never leave me. She's too rational, which actually makes her the easiest to manipulate."

Adrian lunged to shut off the recorder. I raised my hand and blocked him.

His voice trembled. "Serena, those were angry words."

"I know."

"You know, and you're still using them to hurt me?"

I smiled. "Adrian, so you do know those words hurt."

His eyes reddened. "I never sleep with her."

"I told you, that's not the only measure."

"Then what exactly are you charging me with?"

I looked at him. "Infidelity."

Adrian clenched his fists. "Emotional cheating counts?"

"In my marriage, it does."

He closed his eyes. When he opened them, the whites were shot through with red. "Serena, have you ever considered that you might be part of the problem?"

I nodded. "I have."

He stared.

I said, "My biggest mistake was treating a man drowning in insecurity and vanity as someone I could stand beside as an equal."

Adrian's expression shifted violently. "That's how you see me?"

"It's not how I see you." I pushed the divorce papers across the desk. "It's who you've made yourself into."

He stared at the papers, then suddenly laughed. An ugly laugh.

"What if I don't sign?"

"Court."

"What if I pull your clients?"

"Go ahead."

He fixed me with a hard stare. "Serena, don't push me."

I picked up my phone. "Adrian, want to guess whether I turned on a second recorder just now?"

He went completely rigid.

I dialed my assistant. "Mia, come in for a moment."

Mia pushed the door open. I handed her the papers. "Draft a memo of everything Mr. Prescott just said."

Adrian shot to his feet. "Serena!"

I looked up. "What's wrong? Scared?"

His chest heaved. Then he suddenly snatched the papers and tore them in half. The pieces drifted to the floor.

He said, "I will not get divorced."

I looked at the paper scattered across the floor and didn't feel even a flicker of anger.

Adrian walked to the door, turned back, his voice so low it seemed forced through gritted teeth. "Serena, you'll leave me over my dead body."

I pressed the stop button on the recorder. "Alright then."

He froze.

I placed the recorder in the drawer. "See you in court."

The weather was beautiful the day the divorce ruling came down.I took the judgment and stood outside the courthouse. Adrian caught up from behind. "Serena."I stopped. He held his copy of the judgment too. A few thin pages that ended six years. He asked, "Can we still be friends?"I looked at him. "Adrian, you have plenty of connections. No need to turn your ex-wife into another one."He smiled bitterly. "You always did have a way with words.""Thanks."He was quiet for a moment. "I'm going to step away from Prescott Group for a while.""Good.""My mother says I need to go toughen up.""She's right." Adrian looked at me, a thousand things behind his eyes, but only one came out. "Serena, I hope you win a lot of cases."I nodded. "And I hope you stop losing to yourself."He paused, then smiled. As he smiled, the tears fell.I turned and walked away.Nathan's car was parked at the curb. He rolled down his window. "Ms. Ward, heading my way?"I asked, "What are you doing here?""Waiting fo

Vivian came back before the divorce trial. She didn't go to Adrian. She came straight to my firm.I'd just finished a client meeting that day. The receptionist called to say a woman was making a scene in the lobby.I went downstairs. Vivian was sitting on the lobby sofa. Her leg had healed, but her makeup was ruined. The moment she saw me, she stood. "Serena, are you satisfied now?"I looked at her. "Satisfied about what?"Her tears fell. "Mr. Prescott threw me out. My flower shop is gone, I lost my apartment, and now I can't even find work.""And?""This is all because of you!"People were looking. I signaled the receptionist to call the police.Vivian tried to rush me but was held back by security. She screamed through tears, "You're just jealous that I'm younger! Jealous that Mr. Prescott likes talking to me!"I asked, "Are you recording this?"She faltered. "What?""If you're not, let me point out that this lobby has cameras and witnesses. Everything you've said could serve as evid

Adrian's mother had always treated me well. To be precise, she was a very smart mother-in-law.She never meddled, never stirred up trouble, and she was never stingy with holiday gifts. So I went to the hospital. In the room, Mrs. Prescott was propped against the headboard, her color not great. She saw me and sighed first. "Serena, sit down."I sat. Adrian stood to the side.Mrs. Prescott glared at him. "Get out."Adrian didn't move. Mrs. Prescott grabbed a pillow and hurled it at him. "Out."He had no choice but to leave. The door closed. Mrs. Prescott looked at me. "He's a disgrace."I didn't respond.Mrs. Prescott said, "I'm not here to make excuses for him.""Thank you, Mom." The word slipped out, and I caught myself. Mrs. Prescott paused too.Her eyes reddened slightly. "You'll need a different word for me soon."I lowered my head. "I'm sorry."Mrs. Prescott waved it off. "You have nothing to be sorry about."She pulled a document envelope from under her pillow. "This is for you."

Adrian waited downstairs until the small hours. When I came down, he was leaning against the car door, his face flushed from the fever. He straightened when he saw me. "Serena."I walked past him. He reached out and caught my arm. I looked at his hand. "Let go."Adrian held on. "I really do have a fever.""Then you should be at the hospital, not standing guard outside my office."He smiled bitterly. "You don't feel the slightest bit sorry for me anymore?"I considered it. "I do."Something flickered in his eyes.I said, "I feel sorry about my parking bill. It's gone into overtime."Adrian's face froze. He said quietly, "You never used to be like this."That line again. As if I used to be some kind of free pharmacy. When he was hurting, I was supposed to hand him water and pills. When he was lonely, I was supposed to provide the emotional support. When he got lost, I was still supposed to stand in place and wait.I pulled my arm free. "Adrian, you're not who you used to be either."He s

The day after I filed, Adrian pulled three of my clients. To be precise, he used Prescott Group's name to subtly signal to three companies that they should sever cooperation with my firm.Mia was furious. "Serena, that is so low."I flipped through a case file. "Standard.""How is that standard?""When a man can't handle losing, he's worse than a child."Mia held it in as long as she could. "So what do we do?"I set the three termination letters aside. "Find new clients."She was on the verge of tears. "That's easier said than done."I looked at her. "How long have you been with me?""Two years.""When have I ever depended on Adrian for business?"Mia paused.I handed her a list. "Contact these companies. Set up meetings with their legal teams."She looked down at it, and her eyes slowly lit up."These are all clients we've won cases for?""Will they take the meeting?""They will." I paused. "And if they won't, make a few more calls."Mia took the list and headed out. That afternoon, I
