While waiting in line to pick up my prenatal checkup results, a viral video suddenly popped up in my local pregnancy group. The title was shamelessly bold: [How I Got My Ex-Husband’s Wife to Pay $80,000 for My Luxury Postpartum Retreat Without Spending a Dime] In the video, a woman lounged with a sheet mask on her face, grinning smugly at the camera. “My ex-husband gave me his wife’s salary card. He told her he needed it to pay for his dad’s medical treatment. “But I actually used that card to book the most expensive VIP suite at a luxury postpartum care retreat. “That idiot is pregnant and still eating cheap food every day to save money. She really thinks she’s such a devoted daughter-in-law.” When people in the comments accused her of lying, she casually posted a photo of the deposit receipt. I clicked on the enlarged image out of curiosity. Then I froze. The last four digits of the card number were exactly the same as the salary card I’d given my husband. One commenter asked: “Don’t card transactions send notifications? Doesn’t your ex-husband’s wife check her account?” The woman replied with obvious disdain: “My ex-husband blocked her transaction alerts a long time ago. “She went for a prenatal checkup today. I casually mentioned that I was craving fried chicken from Brookhaven. “My ex-husband immediately dropped everything and went to buy it for me. Men are funny. Wherever the money goes, that’s where their hearts follow.” My breath caught. I stared at the man who suddenly appeared in the background of the video. It was my husband. The same husband who had told me he was going to a meeting at the office. He was running toward the woman, drenched in sweat, a bag of fried chicken clutched in his hand.

Chapter 1

I clenched my phone so tightly that my knuckles turned white.

On the screen, Ethan was eagerly handing a bag of fried chicken to Sabrina.

“Sabrina, it just came out. Eat it while it’s hot.”

His voice came through the speakers.

It felt like a blunt, rusty blade stabbing straight into my ears.

I sat frozen on a plastic chair in the hospital hallway.

The prenatal test results in my hand were damp with sweat, the edges crumpled into a wrinkled mess.

Just an hour ago, he had stood outside the hospital and pulled me into an apologetic hug.

“I’m sorry, honey. An emergency meeting came up at the office, and I really can’t get out of it.

“Go ahead and get your tests done. I’ll take you somewhere nice to eat afterward to make it up to you.”

I understood how hard he was working.

I smiled, ushered him toward his car, and reminded him to drive safely.

Then I turned around and took the crowded subway during rush hour just to save a few dollars on a cab.

So his emergency meeting was actually going to Brookhaven to buy fried chicken for his ex-wife.

Ethan had been married once before.

Before we got our marriage certificate, he had confessed everything to me. He told me his ex-wife, Sabrina, was greedy and obsessed with money, that she’d taken all his savings and run off with another man.

His mother had even held my hands and cursed Sabrina as a homewrecker, praising me as the kind of daughter-in-law anyone would be lucky to have.

I believed every word of it.

I didn’t ask for any money from his family, and I even brought a house into the marriage as part of my own assets.

Now it was obvious.

They had never really cut ties.

Sabrina’s unborn child was even Ethan’s.

I forced myself to take a deep breath and opened Sabrina’s profile.

She was a moderately popular mommy blogger, and her page was filled with idyllic posts about her pregnancy.

The comments under her latest video had already exploded.

“Wow, girl, your ex-husband treats you so well!”

“Spending his current wife’s money on his ex? This guy’s something else.”

“His current wife is seriously getting played. I feel so bad for her.”

Sabrina replied to one of the top comments:

“Why feel bad for her? If raising a son weren’t so expensive, she wouldn’t have gotten her foot in the door in the first place.

“My mother-in-law said that if it weren’t for the fact that her family has money, who would want a woman like her who brings nothing but baggage into the marriage?

“Now my father-in-law is pretending to be sick, and the whole family is working together to drain her savings and set aside money to raise my baby.”

I stared at the words on the screen.

My stomach churned violently, and I gagged.

Just last month, my mother-in-law, Margaret Bennett, had grabbed my hand with tears in her eyes and told me that my father-in-law, Richard Bennett, had been diagnosed with an early-stage tumor and needed expensive imported medication to survive.

Ethan had been so worried that he’d smoked all night, saying our family’s cash flow was running dry.

Without a second thought, I handed over the salary account where I’d saved $600,000.
