Chapter 2

Author: MeRuYash
My throat seemed to have something lodged in it as I scrolled through her profile. They had spent the whole day together, going to an amusement park, a cinema, and ending it at what looked like Celeste’s apartment.

Together, my husband and child had played me like a fool.

Although my muscles were weak from the shock, I shakily rushed out of the house into the garden, my phone tightly in my hands.

As the cold wind swept over me, I scrolled through more of Celeste’s pictures, dating as far back as seven months ago when she became Alessia’s etiquette teacher.

On our anniversary seven months ago, Nicolas and I had planned for Alessia to go to his parents’ place so we would spend the night together.

I had spent hours preparing for him. I waited all night in the robe and lingerie he once said drove him crazy. But Nicolas and Alessia only arrived the next morning, telling me that she had an allergic reaction and had been taken to the hospital.

When I asked why they hadn’t informed me earlier that my daughter was at the hospital, they said they didn’t want me to worry on my special day.

Nicolas told me he would make it up to me.

Now, as I scrolled through Celeste’s profile, I realized that on that same night, Celeste had just been promoted from general instructor to private etiquette teacher.

They had never been at the hospital.

They were celebrating with her.

She captioned the photo:

“Finally part of this beautiful family. And I’m never giving them up.”

I closed my eyes and lowered my head, a steady stream of tears resurfacing.

My hand went to the locket on my neck, opening it to the picture of my mom and me 25 years ago.

My mom’s mental state drove her to her death after my dad cheated on her when I was five. Because of that, I promised myself I would never stay with a cheating man.

Nicolas and I met at the cemetery, where he was visiting his sister. Dad didn’t want me to go see my mom’s grave, but I’d snuck out of the house when he was drunk and went there. Nicolas found me crying on my mom’s grave, and he held me, a five-year-old stranger, till my tears stopped.

We became very close, even attending the same elementary school, high school, and university. His parents hated me because, to them, their son was obsessed with me and was throwing away his future for me.

I pulled out the ring on my middle finger. It was his first gift to me, and his promise was:

“My love, I know what your dad did to your mom. I promise you that I will never hurt you in that way. I, Nicolas Laurent, will never cheat on you. And if I do, I deserve everything that comes my way.”

My body shook uncontrollably as sobs once again broke out.

How had I let myself be deceived like this?

And Alessia, my own daughter, whom I had sworn to give my life for if need arose. I worked my ass off to earn money so that if anything ever happened to Nicolas’ company, she would still have a bright future. I was there for every event of hers.

I gazed up at the stars, seeing a lone one tonight. I had always seen three: one for Nicolas, one for Alessia, and one for me.

Alessia always insisted the biggest star belonged to me because it was the prettiest.

Tonight, the lone star matched my reality.

Maybe it was right. Maybe this family… was never mine to begin with.

My heart twisted as more tears left my eyes.

A thought suddenly crossed my mind.

Penthouse.

His message had mentioned a penthouse.

I knew all of Nicolas’ properties, and there was no penthouse in this city… unless he had an undeclared property he was using to play house with Celeste.

I pulled out my phone, calling my private investigator, the same one who had once made sure my father ended up behind bars.

“I need you to investigate something for me. Find out all of Nicolas’ undeclared properties and get me access to them by morning. Be as discreet as possible.”

One week later I was doing it. I was moving back to my mom’s hometown to manage her company and heal from the hurt in my heart. I waved goodbye to Adrian and his wife, about to drive off when a figure, haggard and dirty, dropped on the hood. Celeste, once a socialite and etiquette teacher for the rich, lay on my car like a crumbled heap. I stepped out, folding my arms over my chest. “Now what?” She rushed towards me, her eyes red with fury. “This is all your fault! I’ve been dismissed from my job, my family hates me, and Nicolas is not answering any of my calls. It’s all your fault!” “My fault? And how is it my fault? When you knowingly got into a married man’s bed. What did you think was going to happen?” “Nicolas was supposed to be mine!” she roared. I let out a sigh. “I’m not disputing that. If he will have you, who am I to object? I’ve already divorced him, so he’s all yours.” Her cheeks turned redder. “Have you ever asked yourself how bad of a mother you were that even

Rose paled as though a bucket of ice had been dumped over her. The entire place fell so silent one could hear a pin drop. “W-what are you talking about?” she demanded, fisting her dress while trying to act normal. I walked forward, standing right before her face and said, “You think I don’t know you were my dad’s mistress!” A glass shattered, and three voices all shouted at the same time. “What!” “Serena?” Nicolas called. “Are you sure you’re not mistaken? This is my mother, your late mother’s best friend.” “Exactly. And she’s the same reason my mother died.” I turned back to Rose, who was whiter than a sheet. “You didn’t have enough of ruining my mother’s life. Now you want to ruin mine too?” “Rose… you cheated on me?” her husband asked, clutching his chest. She finally snapped out of her shock. “No, no, darling, I can explain. It was long ago. I’ve changed. I’m better now.” He stormed out, with Rose scrambling after him. “It’s over. Oh no, my life is ruined,” she cried. I t

Serena POV Two days later, I finally turned on my phone. Just as expected, everything had blown up insanely. Media outlets and gossip shows were eating up the news and I couldn’t help but chuckle. My phone had almost 60 missed calls from Nicolas, a few from Alessia, and hundreds of messages I didn’t even bother to open. I walked towards the place I once thought was home, holding my shoulders up high as the movers followed behind me. “Welcome home, Mrs. Laurent,” maids greeted, but I brushed past them without a word. I could afford everything I had come to take, but they mostly belonged to my mom, and I couldn’t abandon the last of her I had. What I didn’t expect was the crowd gathered in the living room. My mother-in-law and father-in-law sat on the sofa flanked by all the maids, and on the loveseat across from them, Celeste sat, her eyes red from crying. “Mama, I’ve lost my job, my family won’t talk to me too. Please just tell Nicolas to talk to me,” she whined. “Hey, don’t c

Alessia sat at the breakfast table, her food untouched. All her life, her mom had always been the one to make her breakfast. This time, the maid had done it. If mommy was here now, she would make sure Alessia ate well and didn’t skip breakfast. After that, she would take her upstairs and brush her hair, dress her up in a beautiful princess’ dress and take her for a weekend walk to the park. Instead, her mom was on another vacation, as Dad had told her. But why didn’t she believe him? “Where is my dad?” “Your dad is in his study, young miss. He asked not to be disturbed,” the maid said with a bow. Alessia sighed and slid off her chair, walking toward the study. At the door, she heard her father’s voice. “She will come back. She has no support system out there. Her mother is dead, her dad is in jail, and she only works at my company… she will come back.” Alessia tilted her head. What was Daddy talking about? “I’m drafting the papers right now. I’ll give her some of my companie

Serena’s POV “We promise we won’t let him know where you are unless you want us to,” Adrian and his wife swore for the nth time. In the entire Laurent family, only these two ever stood by me. “Thank you, guys. I’m happy to have you,” a small smile graced my lips. Adrian cleared his throat. “Serena, I’m so sorry about my brother’s beha—” “No. Please do not try to fix us, Adrian. There’s nothing left to fix.” “I’m not trying to. I just hate that I’m related to that bastard,” he gritted. “Serena, if there’s anything we can help you with, just let us know. We are more than willing,” Adrian said, and his wife nodded in agreement. “No, there’s noth… wait. My shares in Nicolas’ company.” “Yes.” Adrian and his wife exchanged glances. “Do you want to sell them?” A sad smile tugged at my lips. “Not really.” I lowered my gaze. “Transfer everything to Alessia.” Silence crashed over the room as they watched me wide-eyed. “Does this mean you won’t be fighting for custody?” Adrian’s wife

Third Person’s POV Nicolas woke up the next morning with Celeste’s body pressed against his. He gazed down at her face as she slept. No matter how beautiful and exciting Celeste was, in his heart, the most beautiful woman was still Serena. She was gorgeous in every way, and for the past few weeks, Nicolas had been feeling a heavy tug in his chest every time he lied to her face just to go sleep with Celeste. Just three weeks earlier, Serena had spent three nights awake caring for him when he suddenly fell ill. She had missed a big promotion spot at work because she was caring for him.Meanwhile, when Celeste found out he was sick, she complained because he had cancelled their luxury trip. He knew she was only after his money and looks, unlike Serena, who loved him genuinely. Maybe it was time to break things off and go back to being faithful to his wife. He nodded to himself. He was going to end this affair today. Celeste’s eyes fluttered open at the same moment. Her lips stret
