Chapter 3

Author: MeRuYash
The next morning, I had just finished setting up the table when Nicolas walked in. His hair was disheveled, and from the corner of my eye, I noticed him fidgeting, trying to adjust his collar to cover his neck, where a hickey was visible.

As his hands wrapped around my waist, I gripped the plate I was holding so tightly it would have shattered if I had stronger muscles.

“Darling, I’ve missed you so much,” he whispered, kissing my earlobe.

The faint smell of vanilla clung to his shirt.

I stiffened, my stomach twisting as I gently stepped away from him with a curt, “hi.”

He casually walked off and kissed Alessia’s cheek.

“I’m sorry I came home only this morning. I know we were supposed to spend our angel’s birthday together, but something urgent came up at the office. How about I make it up to you guys?”

I nodded with a tight-lipped smile plastered on my face.

Nicolas’s smile faltered.

“Look, Serena, you have every right to be mad. I already missed our anniversary, and I missed Alessia’s birthday. I’m sorry to both of my ladies.”

I blinked back the tears threatening to fall and excused myself.

As I walked out of the room, he and Alessia started speaking in hushed tones.

“Daddy, Mommy was in my room last night. Thankfully, she didn’t find anything. How is Miss Celeste today?”

“She’s doing fine, darling. We will go and meet with her right after we come back. Make your mommy tired so she will sleep off as soon as we return, okay?”

She nodded. “I really like Miss Celeste. I wish she could live with us too. Then I’d have two mommies,” she cheered, clapping her hands..

“I’m glad you like her too. She’s fun to be around,” Nicolas smiled, a dreamy look in his eyes.

“Yes, Daddy. Mom… I mean Miss Celeste lets me eat ice cream and candy whenever I want. She even let me stay up until midnight watching movies last week. Mommy never lets me do any of that. She even says I’m too young to have a phone. Miss Celeste doesn’t mind.”

I clenched the wall to stop my trembling legs from meeting the floor.

Mom?

Then who was I?

And she preferred Celeste because I enforced rules meant to care for her well-being?

Nicolas placed a hand on her hair. “It’s okay to call her Mom. She already takes care of you like a mother, so don’t feel guil—”

He stopped talking as I walked in and cleared his throat.

“Serena, how about we go out today so I can make it up to you? My parents want to celebrate with us.”

“That won’t be necessary. I don’t feel too well.”

His face twisted into a frown.

“Yeah. I noticed you look pale. Are you okay? Didn’t you sleep well? Were you crying?”

I shook his hand off my shoulder and met his concerned gaze.

“I just had some urgent work to handle, so I couldn’t sleep well. About your parents…”

He raised a brow.

“I think you should just take Alessia there. I won’t be able to join you guys.”

He shook his head and wrapped his arm around me again.

“Darling, I’ve told you, my parents will like you, okay? You’re the only woman I’ll ever love.”

My eyes caught sight of the hickey on his neck peeking through his collar. My fists clenched.

“My parents will eventually like you, but you can’t avoid them forever.”

I scoffed under my breath at how smooth his lies were.

For all twenty years of our friendship, dating and marriage, I had tried to impress his parents to no avail.

Even his mother, who was my mom’s best friend, hated me. Two weeks ago, I had personally picked fruits and gifts to take to them only to be met with insults. Perhaps they even knew of their son’s infidelity.

“You guys go ahead. I won’t be joining,” I said with a straight face.

He sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Alright, rest well. We’ll be home soon.”

“Bye, Mommy. We love you,” Alessia kissed my cheek with a sad smile.

At the same time, a message popped up on my phone.

“This is the address of his penthouse in the city. I’ve already gotten you access into it. Is that all?”

I typed back: Yes, that is all for now. Thank you.

Thirty minutes later, I stood before the penthouse, my heart racing. Deep down, I was still hoping that all of this was a dream. That last night never really happened. And that I’ll find out this penthouse was just a getaway place for when he wanted to be alone.

My thoughts kept tangling as I swiped the key card and heard two beeps.

Access granted.

My investigator had confirmed Celeste wasn’t around, so I quickly walked inside and froze.

Two pairs of house slippers and Alessia’s flip flops, were placed neatly by the door.

I walked into the first bedroom, decorated in purple and blue, Alessia’s favorite colors. The walls were lined with drawings, each one squeezing my heart even more.

Alessia loved drawing, and I always supported her. Until now, as I stared with glossy eyes at the little family of three on the paper. Even with no recognizable faces, the mother was a blonde. I had black hair.

My lips trembled as a sob broke out. I wrapped my arms around myself, scurried out of the room, and into the master bedroom.

I wrinkled my nose at the untidied state of the room. White lace lingerie lay on the floor along with Nicolas’ shirt and shoes. A watch I had gifted him for his last birthday lay on the nightstand.

My gaze wandered into the closet, filled with all brands of designer clothes. The color drained from my face as I glanced through. Dresses and jewelry I had lost over the past months, they were all here.

I had been extremely worried, not that I couldn’t afford more, but because my stuff was disappearing from home.

Nicolas had only said, “Don’t bother, my love. We’ll buy new ones. Whoever the thief is, they clearly just want your style.”

Now I could see he was stealing my clothes and dolling up his mistress to look like me.

I swallowed hard, pulled out the little camera my investigator delivered to me, walked to a flower vase, and gently attached it inside.

One week later I was doing it. I was moving back to my mom’s hometown to manage her company and heal from the hurt in my heart. I waved goodbye to Adrian and his wife, about to drive off when a figure, haggard and dirty, dropped on the hood. Celeste, once a socialite and etiquette teacher for the rich, lay on my car like a crumbled heap. I stepped out, folding my arms over my chest. “Now what?” She rushed towards me, her eyes red with fury. “This is all your fault! I’ve been dismissed from my job, my family hates me, and Nicolas is not answering any of my calls. It’s all your fault!” “My fault? And how is it my fault? When you knowingly got into a married man’s bed. What did you think was going to happen?” “Nicolas was supposed to be mine!” she roared. I let out a sigh. “I’m not disputing that. If he will have you, who am I to object? I’ve already divorced him, so he’s all yours.” Her cheeks turned redder. “Have you ever asked yourself how bad of a mother you were that even

Rose paled as though a bucket of ice had been dumped over her. The entire place fell so silent one could hear a pin drop. “W-what are you talking about?” she demanded, fisting her dress while trying to act normal. I walked forward, standing right before her face and said, “You think I don’t know you were my dad’s mistress!” A glass shattered, and three voices all shouted at the same time. “What!” “Serena?” Nicolas called. “Are you sure you’re not mistaken? This is my mother, your late mother’s best friend.” “Exactly. And she’s the same reason my mother died.” I turned back to Rose, who was whiter than a sheet. “You didn’t have enough of ruining my mother’s life. Now you want to ruin mine too?” “Rose… you cheated on me?” her husband asked, clutching his chest. She finally snapped out of her shock. “No, no, darling, I can explain. It was long ago. I’ve changed. I’m better now.” He stormed out, with Rose scrambling after him. “It’s over. Oh no, my life is ruined,” she cried. I t

Serena POV Two days later, I finally turned on my phone. Just as expected, everything had blown up insanely. Media outlets and gossip shows were eating up the news and I couldn’t help but chuckle. My phone had almost 60 missed calls from Nicolas, a few from Alessia, and hundreds of messages I didn’t even bother to open. I walked towards the place I once thought was home, holding my shoulders up high as the movers followed behind me. “Welcome home, Mrs. Laurent,” maids greeted, but I brushed past them without a word. I could afford everything I had come to take, but they mostly belonged to my mom, and I couldn’t abandon the last of her I had. What I didn’t expect was the crowd gathered in the living room. My mother-in-law and father-in-law sat on the sofa flanked by all the maids, and on the loveseat across from them, Celeste sat, her eyes red from crying. “Mama, I’ve lost my job, my family won’t talk to me too. Please just tell Nicolas to talk to me,” she whined. “Hey, don’t c

Alessia sat at the breakfast table, her food untouched. All her life, her mom had always been the one to make her breakfast. This time, the maid had done it. If mommy was here now, she would make sure Alessia ate well and didn’t skip breakfast. After that, she would take her upstairs and brush her hair, dress her up in a beautiful princess’ dress and take her for a weekend walk to the park. Instead, her mom was on another vacation, as Dad had told her. But why didn’t she believe him? “Where is my dad?” “Your dad is in his study, young miss. He asked not to be disturbed,” the maid said with a bow. Alessia sighed and slid off her chair, walking toward the study. At the door, she heard her father’s voice. “She will come back. She has no support system out there. Her mother is dead, her dad is in jail, and she only works at my company… she will come back.” Alessia tilted her head. What was Daddy talking about? “I’m drafting the papers right now. I’ll give her some of my companie

Serena’s POV “We promise we won’t let him know where you are unless you want us to,” Adrian and his wife swore for the nth time. In the entire Laurent family, only these two ever stood by me. “Thank you, guys. I’m happy to have you,” a small smile graced my lips. Adrian cleared his throat. “Serena, I’m so sorry about my brother’s beha—” “No. Please do not try to fix us, Adrian. There’s nothing left to fix.” “I’m not trying to. I just hate that I’m related to that bastard,” he gritted. “Serena, if there’s anything we can help you with, just let us know. We are more than willing,” Adrian said, and his wife nodded in agreement. “No, there’s noth… wait. My shares in Nicolas’ company.” “Yes.” Adrian and his wife exchanged glances. “Do you want to sell them?” A sad smile tugged at my lips. “Not really.” I lowered my gaze. “Transfer everything to Alessia.” Silence crashed over the room as they watched me wide-eyed. “Does this mean you won’t be fighting for custody?” Adrian’s wife

Third Person’s POV Nicolas woke up the next morning with Celeste’s body pressed against his. He gazed down at her face as she slept. No matter how beautiful and exciting Celeste was, in his heart, the most beautiful woman was still Serena. She was gorgeous in every way, and for the past few weeks, Nicolas had been feeling a heavy tug in his chest every time he lied to her face just to go sleep with Celeste. Just three weeks earlier, Serena had spent three nights awake caring for him when he suddenly fell ill. She had missed a big promotion spot at work because she was caring for him.Meanwhile, when Celeste found out he was sick, she complained because he had cancelled their luxury trip. He knew she was only after his money and looks, unlike Serena, who loved him genuinely. Maybe it was time to break things off and go back to being faithful to his wife. He nodded to himself. He was going to end this affair today. Celeste’s eyes fluttered open at the same moment. Her lips stret
