Chapter 3

Autor: Yes to Tacos
“The online reaction to Snow is getting worse. We have to move first and turn the public opinion around.”

Zeke explained, “As long as we pin full responsibility on your father, Snow will be completely safe.

“By tomorrow morning, everyone online will be sympathizing with Snow and condemning your father.

“Once that happens, no one will bother to look into the truth behind the accident.”

Snow added smugly, “Zeke really thought of everything. Sophia, don’t take it personally.

“Your father is already gone. His reputation doesn’t really matter anymore, does it?

“You can’t ruin the future of someone who’s still alive just for a dead man, right?”

I looked at the shameless pair in front of me and forced the metallic taste back down my throat.

Of course, I did not mind. I even felt like helping them along.

I took out my phone and pulled up a contact.

“Hello, Mr. Zach? This is Sophia.

“I have a major story about the pianist, Snow Lowell. It’s guaranteed to go viral. Are you interested?”

Zeke and Snow both froze.

Zeke came back to his senses first. He grabbed the phone from my hand and yelled into it, “Wrong number!”

Then he hung up hard.

“Sophia, what exactly are you trying to do?

“Do you really think calling some small-time reporter gives you leverage over me?”

I looked at his furious face and smiled instead.

“Why are you so nervous? I’m just trying to help. Didn’t you say you wanted to create a buzz?

“The media contacts I have are far better than that amateur PR team of yours.

“I’m sure the major outlets would be very happy to cover a touching story about a genius pianist.”

Zeke’s expression shifted again and again. He stared at me, as if trying to see through me.

Snow, however, believed it immediately. She grabbed Zeke’s arm excitedly.

“Zeke, Sophia’s right.

“If we can get into the major outlets, the effect will be much better. Then everyone will know about me.”

Zeke frowned. He was clearly still suspicious of my intentions.

I did not bother wasting words on them anymore.

I said plainly, “I can help you, but I have conditions.”

“What conditions?” Zeke asked cautiously.

“Give me back the share transfer agreement and get out of my father’s company.”

Zeke’s face darkened.

“Sophia, don’t push your luck!

“Your father’s company will be mine sooner or later. Do you think you can bargain with me now? Don’t you find that ridiculous?”

“Do you?” I took out my phone and played the recording from earlier.

Zeke’s words came through loud and clear. “As long as we pin full responsibility on your father, Snow will be completely safe.”

His eyes went wide in shock.

Snow went deathly pale. She pointed at me and said, “Y-you actually recorded us?”

“If I didn’t, how could I prove your so-called innocence?” I said calmly and stopped the recording.

“If this audio went to the police, or got posted online, what do you think would happen?”

Cold sweat beaded on Zeke’s forehead.

He knew that once the recording came out, Snow would be finished, and he would be dragged down with her for interfering with justice.

He clenched his fists until his nails almost dug into his palms.

After a long silence, he said through clenched teeth, “Fine, you win.”

He turned and went into the study, then came back with a document. It was the share transfer agreement my father had signed years ago.

He slammed it into my face. The sharp edge scraped my cheek, and it sent a burning pain through my skin.

“Take it. Are you happy now?”

  • My Husband's Childhood Friend Killed His Father   Chapter 9

On the day of the trial, I went to court.I sat in the front row of the gallery and quietly watched the two people in the defendant’s seats. It had only been a few months, yet they already looked like different people entirely. In court, they still made a final attempt to fight back. They accused each other and hurled insults. They laid bare every form of human cruelty. However, in the face of overwhelming evidence, every defense sounded weak and empty. When the gavel fell, Zeke looked at me.He opened his mouth and silently mouthed a few words.I understood him.He was saying, “I’m sorry.”I turned away and kept my face blank.Sorry? If apologies meant anything, there would be no need for the law.He did not owe me an apology. He owed his father an apology. He had personally pushed his father to his death and then ruined his reputation even after his passing.I walked out of the court calmly. My parents were waiting for me outside. My father’s hair had turned much whit

I had the security guard escort Linda out and never saw her again.A few days later, I received an unexpected call.It was Zeke’s mother, my former mother-in-law, Hailey Zimmerman. The moment I answered, her sharp, wailing voice came through the line. “Sophia, you curse! You wicked woman! “Killing my husband was not enough, and now you want to harm my son?! “If anything happens to my son, I’ll haunt you, even as a ghost!”Her voice was full of rage and hatred.I did not bother arguing and hung up immediately. As she was the one who had raised Zeke, I knew that I could never reason with her. That night, I worked overtime and did not get home until it was very late.As I stepped out of the elevator in the underground garage, I felt a strong gust of wind behind me.I dodged instinctively. A bottle holding some kind of liquid flew past my cheek and hit the wall behind me. It sizzled as it burned and gave off a sharp, acrid smell. It was acid!I broke out in a cold sweat. W

Before I could speak, my father snorted coldly. “Your daughter was driving, and she killed someone. Yet you’re not letting her take responsibility and own up to it. “Not a single one of you has any respect for the deceased. “And now you want to settle this privately? “I tell you, that’s impossible!”My father turned to Officer Zayden and said firmly, “Officer, we demand that the law take its course. No settlements.”The Lowell family was completely hopeless.Zeke was taken into criminal detention. Snow, as the driver in the accident, was also held temporarily. To protect himself, Zeke shifted all the blame during the interrogation. He claimed that he had no knowledge of Snow’s driving. After the accident, he said Snow misled him into thinking the deceased was his father-in-law, which caused him to make wrong decisions in a panic. As for the online articles defaming his father, he denied them completely. He claimed Snow’s PR team acted on their own.Snow was not about to

I looked at the man who had been bossing me around just a few hours ago. He was lying at my feet like a dog.I slowly pried his fingers off me, one by one. Then, I grabbed the divorce agreement I had prepared earlier from my bag and threw it in his face. “Soon, we will no longer be husband and wife. “Zeke, sign this before you go to jail. I don’t want to have anything to do with you anymore.”Zeke stared at the divorce agreement, stunned. “Divorce…?” he murmured, “No, I won’t agree. I’d rather die than agree.”“That’s not up to you.”My lawyer stepped forward and handed another document to Officer Zayden.“These are recordings of parts of my client, Ms. Sophia Carter’s, conversations with Mr. Zeke Larson after the car accident.“They clearly show Mr. Zeke Larson trying to falsify evidence and obstruct justice.“We have also filed a lawsuit with the court.“It accuses Mr. Zeke Larson of, during the marriage, using his position to take assets from the company owned by Ms.

I smiled faintly. “Thanks for your concern. My parents are fine.”Zeke’s eyes went wide. He ran to Officer Zayden like a man possessed.“Officer, did you get it wrong?“Who is dead? Tell me, who is dead?!”Officer Zayden was startled by his outburst. He pulled his hand away and said firmly, “Mr. Larson, please calm down. “We have confirmed the identity of the deceased. The ID and DNA match perfectly.”He picked up a document from the table and said clearly, “The deceased is John Larson, a 58-year-old man. “He’s the owner of the vehicle involved in the accident and the biological father of Mr. Zeke Larson.”For a moment, Zeke’s mind went blank. He staggered back a few steps and sank to the floor. He was stunned.Snow finally came back to her senses. She pointed at me in disbelief. “How… How is this possible? I clearly hit—”Before she could finish, Zeke lunged at her from the floor. “You! This is all your fault! You killed my father!”“Ah!”Snow screamed as Zeke gra

I picked up the agreement and tore it to pieces without even looking at it.“Is that all?”Zeke’s chest heaved violently. After a tense moment, he slowly closed his eyes. “Fine, I’ll agree. Tomorrow, I’ll go to the company and submit my resignation. “But don’t get too happy.” He opened his eyes sharply and glared at me. “Without me in charge, the company will go bankrupt in less than three months. Don’t come crying back to me then.”With that, he grabbed the stunned Snow and stormed out, slamming the door behind them. The living room was empty. I was alone.I walked to the window and watched the black Porsche vanish down the street. A cold smile played on my lips.Zeke had underestimated me. I would not beg him. I would make sure he ended up with nothing. The next day, Zeke kept his promise and handed in his resignation. At the same time, I got a call from the police.“Ms. Carter? There are some new developments in your father-in-law’s case. “We need you and the driv
