Chapter 4

Author: Yes to Tacos
I picked up the agreement and tore it to pieces without even looking at it.

“Is that all?”

Zeke’s chest heaved violently. After a tense moment, he slowly closed his eyes.

“Fine, I’ll agree. Tomorrow, I’ll go to the company and submit my resignation.

“But don’t get too happy.” He opened his eyes sharply and glared at me.

“Without me in charge, the company will go bankrupt in less than three months. Don’t come crying back to me then.”

With that, he grabbed the stunned Snow and stormed out, slamming the door behind them.

The living room was empty. I was alone.

I walked to the window and watched the black Porsche vanish down the street. A cold smile played on my lips.

Zeke had underestimated me.

I would not beg him. I would make sure he ended up with nothing.

The next day, Zeke kept his promise and handed in his resignation.

At the same time, I got a call from the police.

“Ms. Carter? There are some new developments in your father-in-law’s case.

“We need you and the driver’s family to come to the station for the final determination of responsibility.”

I hesitated for a moment, then said, “All right. I’ll be there right away.”

When I arrived at the station, Zeke and Snow were already there.

Snow’s parents had come with them.

The moment Snow saw me, she ducked behind her mother and peered at me nervously.

Her mother, Linda Thompson, quickly wiped her eyes with a handkerchief. She said, “Ms. Carter, we’re truly sorry.

“Snow has always been naive and timid. This was purely an accident.

“We’re willing to offer compensation. Name the amount, and we’ll pay it.”

Her father, Peter Lowell, nodded as well. He carried himself like a wealthy, self-assured man.

“Yes, Ms. Carter. Money can solve anything.

“As soon as you sign this settlement agreement, we can transfer the funds to your account.”

Their lawyer pushed an already prepared settlement agreement across the table to me.

I glanced at it. The compensation section showed a seven-figure sum.

To them, a human life was worth only that much.

Zeke stood to the side with his arms crossed and watched with a cold expression. He even spoke as if he cared.

“Sophia, Snow’s parents are sincere. Just sign it. It’s better for everyone.

“With this money, you’ll be set for life.

“As for the company, don’t fight it. Sell it to me, and I’ll give you even more. Isn’t that a better deal?”

I looked at his entitled, overconfident face and let out a laugh.

“Zeke, you’re mistaken.”

“What do you mean?”

“I’m not the one who should be signing this settlement agreement.”

Zeke’s brow furrowed.

“What do you mean? Your father is dead. You’re his only legal heiress. If not you, then who?”

“Of course, the one whose father died should be the one to sign it.”

As soon as I spoke, the meeting room door opened.

Officer Zayden, the officer handling the case, walked in. Behind him was a middle-aged couple who looked anxious.

The moment Zeke saw them, his face went completely still.

I stepped forward and took the couple’s arms.

“Mom, Dad, you’re here.”

My parents looked at me, worried.

“Sophia, we came as soon as Officer Zayden called. Are you alright?”

“I’m fine.” I gently patted their hands.

The meeting room fell silent.

Snow’s family and their lawyer stared, stunned.

Zeke looked like he had seen a ghost. His face drained of color until it was pale as paper.

“Your father… Your father can’t still be alive!”

On the day of the trial, I went to court.I sat in the front row of the gallery and quietly watched the two people in the defendant’s seats. It had only been a few months, yet they already looked like different people entirely. In court, they still made a final attempt to fight back. They accused each other and hurled insults. They laid bare every form of human cruelty. However, in the face of overwhelming evidence, every defense sounded weak and empty. When the gavel fell, Zeke looked at me.He opened his mouth and silently mouthed a few words.I understood him.He was saying, “I’m sorry.”I turned away and kept my face blank.Sorry? If apologies meant anything, there would be no need for the law.He did not owe me an apology. He owed his father an apology. He had personally pushed his father to his death and then ruined his reputation even after his passing.I walked out of the court calmly. My parents were waiting for me outside. My father’s hair had turned much whit

I had the security guard escort Linda out and never saw her again.A few days later, I received an unexpected call.It was Zeke’s mother, my former mother-in-law, Hailey Zimmerman. The moment I answered, her sharp, wailing voice came through the line. “Sophia, you curse! You wicked woman! “Killing my husband was not enough, and now you want to harm my son?! “If anything happens to my son, I’ll haunt you, even as a ghost!”Her voice was full of rage and hatred.I did not bother arguing and hung up immediately. As she was the one who had raised Zeke, I knew that I could never reason with her. That night, I worked overtime and did not get home until it was very late.As I stepped out of the elevator in the underground garage, I felt a strong gust of wind behind me.I dodged instinctively. A bottle holding some kind of liquid flew past my cheek and hit the wall behind me. It sizzled as it burned and gave off a sharp, acrid smell. It was acid!I broke out in a cold sweat. W

Before I could speak, my father snorted coldly. “Your daughter was driving, and she killed someone. Yet you’re not letting her take responsibility and own up to it. “Not a single one of you has any respect for the deceased. “And now you want to settle this privately? “I tell you, that’s impossible!”My father turned to Officer Zayden and said firmly, “Officer, we demand that the law take its course. No settlements.”The Lowell family was completely hopeless.Zeke was taken into criminal detention. Snow, as the driver in the accident, was also held temporarily. To protect himself, Zeke shifted all the blame during the interrogation. He claimed that he had no knowledge of Snow’s driving. After the accident, he said Snow misled him into thinking the deceased was his father-in-law, which caused him to make wrong decisions in a panic. As for the online articles defaming his father, he denied them completely. He claimed Snow’s PR team acted on their own.Snow was not about to

I looked at the man who had been bossing me around just a few hours ago. He was lying at my feet like a dog.I slowly pried his fingers off me, one by one. Then, I grabbed the divorce agreement I had prepared earlier from my bag and threw it in his face. “Soon, we will no longer be husband and wife. “Zeke, sign this before you go to jail. I don’t want to have anything to do with you anymore.”Zeke stared at the divorce agreement, stunned. “Divorce…?” he murmured, “No, I won’t agree. I’d rather die than agree.”“That’s not up to you.”My lawyer stepped forward and handed another document to Officer Zayden.“These are recordings of parts of my client, Ms. Sophia Carter’s, conversations with Mr. Zeke Larson after the car accident.“They clearly show Mr. Zeke Larson trying to falsify evidence and obstruct justice.“We have also filed a lawsuit with the court.“It accuses Mr. Zeke Larson of, during the marriage, using his position to take assets from the company owned by Ms.

I smiled faintly. “Thanks for your concern. My parents are fine.”Zeke’s eyes went wide. He ran to Officer Zayden like a man possessed.“Officer, did you get it wrong?“Who is dead? Tell me, who is dead?!”Officer Zayden was startled by his outburst. He pulled his hand away and said firmly, “Mr. Larson, please calm down. “We have confirmed the identity of the deceased. The ID and DNA match perfectly.”He picked up a document from the table and said clearly, “The deceased is John Larson, a 58-year-old man. “He’s the owner of the vehicle involved in the accident and the biological father of Mr. Zeke Larson.”For a moment, Zeke’s mind went blank. He staggered back a few steps and sank to the floor. He was stunned.Snow finally came back to her senses. She pointed at me in disbelief. “How… How is this possible? I clearly hit—”Before she could finish, Zeke lunged at her from the floor. “You! This is all your fault! You killed my father!”“Ah!”Snow screamed as Zeke gra
