Chapter 6

Author: Reneemoon
So she'd known exactly what she was doing the whole time!

My nails dug into my palms.

"Doesn't bother me. The man you worked so hard to steal is one I'd already thrown away."

Sophia's face darkened. She advanced on me, the keys clenched in her fist.

"You were out there so torn up you could barely stand, and you still put on this act. Doesn't it get exhausting?

"I know you want to take your parents' urns with you. So how about you drop the high-and-mighty routine and beg me?"

She made as if to throw the keys out the window into the middle of the lake.

"Otherwise, your parents will be left here, abandoned forever."

I stared at her, my eyes burning.

Oblivious, she kept laughing so hard she shook.

"But you know all about being abandoned, don't you, Donna? First your parents, and now your husband. Ha ha ha..."

Crack!

One slap, and that shrill laugh of hers stopped.

Her eyes went wide. She stumbled and landed hard on the floor, staring at me in disbelief.

"Are you insane?!"

Before I could say anything, her eyes locked on something behind me.

A second later, she grabbed her stomach and curled in on herself.

"It's all my fault, Donna! Don't be angry...

"The baby... I'm begging you, leave my baby alone!"

A dark figure barreled past, slamming into my side.

Leonardo dropped down beside Sophia to shield her. When he looked up at me, his eyes were blazing.

"Julia, what are you doing? Are you trying to kill her?

"I told you she wasn't well. Why do you keep coming after her?!"

My arm was numb where he'd knocked into me. Holding it, I looked up at him.

Why had he blamed me without asking a single question?

Leonardo took a deep breath and picked Sophia up without another glance at me.

She rested against his chest and glanced at me through her tears, a flash of triumph in her eyes.

Then she dangled the keys from her fingers.

I moved before I could think, reaching to take them from her.

Before I could even touch her, Leonardo shoved me back.

I lost my balance and fell straight backward.

Crash!

My back slammed into the glass case, sending shards flying everywhere.

Both urns fell and shattered, scattering ashes and fragments across the floor.

The pounding got closer. The second door was shaking in its frame.Leonardo's hand shook so badly the barrel trembled with it.He looked at me like he was making the hardest decision of his life."Put it down..." His voice was as rough as sandpaper. "Please, put it down..."I'll let you go. I'll let you go...""Say exactly what you mean.""I'll let you go. For good. I won't look for you. I won't come near you again. You're free.""Swear it."His jaw clenched. Tears fell to the floor, one by one."I swear it. On my father's name, on the Rizzo family's name, on my own soul. I, Leonardo Rizzo, will leave Julia alone for the rest of my life."Downstairs, the second door gave way, and the third started rattling.I lowered the gun.He seemed to collapse in on himself. His gun slipped from his hand and hit the floor with a thud. The door flew inward, and Elias came through with his men.Blood was still seeping through the towel on his arm. He was pale, but his gaze was fierce. At the sight of

Leonardo turned to look at me, and something behind his eyes broke."You had this set up all along?""Not me," I said. "Him."He's faster than you." I looked at Leonardo and spoke evenly. "It took you 91 days to find me. It took him three hours to find you."Leonardo's men were already taking positions by the door. One had drawn his gun.Leonardo stood in the middle of the living room, looking at me as he drew his backup gun from his waistband. He aimed it at the door. Not at me.His voice was low and wild, like the growl of a cornered wolf. "He thinks he can take you from me?""Leonardo, don't do anything stupid.""Stupid?" He looked at me and laughed. "I've done plenty of stupid things. Betraying you. Pushing you. Killing our child. Which one of those wasn't stupid?"He came over, set the backup gun down on the coffee table, and drew another one.His own sidearm. He put it to his temple."You leave, I die."I looked at him.He wasn't putting on a show. His hand shook, and his eyes we

Leonardo took me to the penthouse of the only apartment building in town.Three new locks went on the door. Bars went over the windows. He pushed me inside and stood in the doorway with his back against the door, like a wall.I stood in the middle of the living room and watched him turn. He looked exhausted, almost wild."You're locking me up?" My voice came out strangely calm."I'm not locking you up." He moved slowly, as if struggling to control himself. "I'm protecting you. It isn't safe out there."Julia, listen to me. I know I got a lot of things wrong before. All of it..."Pushing you. Cheating. Killing our baby. I admit to all of it."He took a step forward, his voice shaking. "Hit me. Scream at me. Make me spend the rest of my life making it up to you. Just don't leave.""I don't want you to make it up to me," I said."Then what do you want?" he almost shouted. "Tell me! Whatever it is, I'll give it to you! A bakery? I'll open ten. A hundred. You want to make cakes? I'll bring

The side window of the bakery shattered from the outside.Glass sprayed across the floor, and someone came through the frame and landed hard. She got up, her hair wild and her face pale. Her pregnancy was just beginning to show.Sophia.She gripped a knife, and her crazed eyes swept the room before locking on me."I followed you here." Her voice was so shrill it almost cracked. "You threw me away just to chase this bitch?!""I bribed one of Leonardo's guards after he locked me away. He told me he'd found you through a facial-recognition broker and was flying to Zurich. I followed his jet, then paid a local driver to watch this bakery for me."She came at me, the blade catching the morning light.Leonardo instinctively lunged to get between us, but Elias was faster. He pulled me behind him and snatched a baking sheet from the counter, holding it in front of him as a shield. Her knife screeched across the metal, sending up sparks."Elias!"The blade caught his arm. Blood welled up, runni

Leonardo didn't move.Wind blew through the gap in the door behind him. He'd lost weight, his cheekbones sharp and his eyes sunken. He looked hollowed out. Then he laughed."Where do you think you can go? You think a new name, a new town, some..."He shot Elias a cutting look, his voice rising sharply. "Some kid, and you get to start over?!"Elias didn't back down.He took half a step forward, putting himself between us. "Sir, I need you to leave." His voice was quiet and steady.Leonardo's eyes went cold.He lifted a hand, and the two men behind him started forward."Don't touch him."I moved in front of Elias and looked up at Leonardo. He was a head and a half taller than me, but I pinned him with my stare."You want to take me? Fine. But you don't touch him."He looked at me standing in front of another man, and his face went rigid."For him..." His voice was raw, dragged up from deep in his chest. "You're protecting him from me?""I'm doing this for myself." I looked straight at hi

He looked down at the pastry, his voice low. "I ran out on my family too. My father married someone new. My stepmother is good to me, but every time I see her sitting in my mother's chair..."He didn't finish."I want to go back," he said suddenly. "But... not by myself."He turned to look at me, uncertainty flickering in his pale gray eyes."Nina, you remind me of my mother. Not in the way you look. There's a kind of... calm about you. Like still water with so much beneath the surface."You check the door three times every night."You never use your real name with the customers."When you mail something, you address it to a cemetery in Chicago. But the name you use isn't yours."He took a breath."I called someone from the firm to look into it. That cemetery in Chicago has no record of anyone named Nina. Am I right?"I stopped sifting the flour."I'm sorry. That was out of line." He looked down, gripping his apron. "But I know you're running from something. That sadness in your eyes..
