Chapter 1

The moment the call went through, the atmosphere at the counter and the other shops around us seemed to freeze.

Layla Lark, my future daughter-in-law, turned completely pale. She grabbed my sleeve tightly and asked in a quivering voice, “Leto, did Apollo…?”

I could understand Layla’s reaction.

After all, she had suddenly heard her future mother-in-law getting a two-million-dollar tab on the eve of her engagement party. Any woman would immediately think that her fiance had cheated.

As I watched the shop attendant’s malicious glee and the blatant disdain in her eyes, I figured out what she was thinking. She thought she was watching the legit fiancee catching the mistress.

However, I did not hang up. I just calmly recited the jewelry shop’s address.

Before hanging up, I turned around to fix Layla a gentle but firm stare while I spoke clearly for everyone around us to hear. “Calm down, Layla. This has nothing to do with Apollo. I’ll handle it for you. I trust my son. If he cheated on you, I’ll break his legs.”

Those words calmed her down instantly. Layla immediately teared up, but the fear of being betrayed had yet to disappear fully. With trembling hands, she took out her phone and called Apollo.

Three seconds later, she heard a voice telling her that the call could not go through for the time being.

Layla’s face turned paler.

At the same time, a woman in a uniform strode over. Her nametag stated that she was Mandy Williams, the shop owner.

“What are you doing, Ma’am?” Mandy had a perfectly professional smile on, and she spoke gently, though I could detect a hint of reproach in it. “This is just a minor thing. Why did you call the police? You’re about to become a family. You just need to resolve the misunderstanding.”

While she spoke, she subtly stood between me and Layla as her gaze landed on the dazed Layla.

“Calm down, Miss Lark. Men are busy sometimes, and they have no control over their own bodies. If your husband isn’t answering his phone, he might be feeling guilty of something. Why don’t you pay first? Then, you can go back home and ask him about it. If he’s really cheating on you, your mother-in-law will surely side with you.”

She had a way with words and kept hinting at Layla that this was a family matter. She was trying to turn this business scam into a family conflict.

The whispers around us were not loud, but they stabbed into me like thorns.

“Did you hear that? That girl is her future daughter-in-law…”

“Heh. Rich families are full of complicated problems. The son might be keeping a lover.”

Those words made Layla even paler.

When Mandy saw this, her smile widened, since she thought that she had caught our weakness.

I sneered.

This was why they dared to do this. She was betting on the fact that someone like me would suffer this insolence in silence for the sake of my dignity.

Unfortunately for her, she was wrong.

I earned my dignity bit by bit in the business world. I did not need to maintain it through concessions.

“Miss Williams.” I did not speak loudly, but I did make her freeze.

As I faced her gaze, I continued calmly, “One, my future in-laws are enjoying tea right now in Soul District. So, where exactly did that ‘in-law’ come from? Two, that two-million-dollar receipt doesn’t contain my signature, wasn’t verified by phone, and never requested me to show any ID before it was issued to me. Yet, you dared to bill it to me just because some random stranger claimed herself to be my future in-law?”

I looked around and pointed at the brilliant diamonds in the glass cabinets.

“I’m sure that your security system is top notch. Your security cameras cover every part of your shop. But you’re telling me that your management is worse than the wet market downstairs? Even the shop owners there would ask if you want an extra onion as a gift! How could you be so lax when you sell jewelry here?”

My voice remained low, but the mockery in my voice was clear.

The rich ladies watching could not help but snicker, and they started siding with us.

“She’s right. That’s two million dollars. How could the shop owner just issue it to someone else just because some random person said so?”

“This shop’s management is scary. No one would dare buy jewelry here anymore.”

Mandy’s face turned as red as a tomato in the next second. Since I tore off her mask, she flew into a rage and raised her voice. “Ma’am, don’t be unreasonable! We already verified things, and there were no problems! If you don’t settle the bill today, you’re not leaving!”

Ooh, that was a blatant threat.

However, I was not scared. Instead, I smiled.

Taking out my phone, I adjusted the angle, pointed the camera at her enraged face, and started recording a video as I stared at her calmly. “Sure. Please repeat what you just said right into the camera and to all the other customers. Tell us clearly that you’re going to illegally keep me here before the police arrive.”

Mandy’s rage was instantly put out, like I had poured ice water on her.

When she saw my phone, she acted as if she was looking at a cannon. She opened her mouth but could not say anything.

As for Layla, who stood behind me and watched my actions, her panic faded and turned into great pride.

Right then, her phone rang, and the caller ID showed that it was from my son, Apollo Stane.

Apollo practically ran over, and since he was six feet tall, he nearly tripped over the escalator. He had not even buttoned up his coat, and his tie was skewed. He ran over to Layla first, and without a word, he hugged her while cradling the back of her head. He also rested his chin on her crown. “Sorry,” he said. Layla hummed and buried her face in his chest as she cried. I stood by the side but did not think that I was a third wheel. If I could raise Apollo, I could wait for Layla to finish crying. Thirty seconds later, Apollo released her and turned to me. “Thanks, Mom.”He straightened up, and the panic in his eyes was gone. In its place was the unyielding cold I was familiar with. It was exactly like his father’s. “Wilson sent me a message about Donald while I was driving. I’ve already sent security guards to his office to secure his laptop and phone,” he whispered. I nodded. “If you’re supposed to hand any evidence to the police, do it. Don’t skip out on any le

When the police officers took Flora and Mandy away, the onlookers opened up a path for them. Suddenly, Flora turned around and shouted at me, “Don’t act so smug, Leto! Do you really think things are over just because you got me arrested? Holt worked for ten years in your company. You have no idea how many backup plans he has!”Due to her hysteria, her voice became piercing to the ears, but those who understood what she said gasped. I did not respond because it was not necessary. If I responded to her threats, I would lose. After I watched them get stuffed into the police car, I looked away and massaged my temples. Just then, Layla handed me a bottle of water. At some point in time, she had gone into the coffee shop next door to buy two bottles of water. “Have some water, Leto.”I accepted the bottle and took a sip. Layla was really attentive. Despite everything we had gone through, she still remembered that I had not drunk any water after arriving at the supermarket.

The title of the document was [Investigation report into the itinerary and spending habits of Grand Source CEO Leto Jackson’s family.]There were a total of twelve pages, all printed on A4-sized paper. On the first page was my photo, and beside it was my car license plate number, the restaurants and the gym I frequented, and even the fact that I always visited a florist to buy flowers on Thursday afternoon. On the second page was Apollo’s. His photo, company address, the time he got in and off work, the supermarkets he frequented, and the fact that he was going to be in a meeting today were listed. The time had even been accurately predicted to be between 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.On the third page was Layla. The fourth page contained the jewelry shop’s employee schedule. My eyes landed on a name circled in red at the bottom right corner of the schedule—Mandy. Next to it was a string of hastily written words, but I could still read them. [Shop owner agreed to cooperate. 30/70 s

The moment the police officers grabbed her, the woman started screaming. “Let me go! You have no right to capture me! I didn’t do anything wrong!”As she struggled to break free, two buttons on her trench coat popped to reveal a shiny necklace underneath. A large diamond ring was hanging beside the pendant. I walked over and observed the diamond ring. The two-million-dollar “pigeon egg” was hanging from her neck, and it swayed as she struggled. “I’ve found the stolen ring, officers.” I spoke as calmly as I would talking about the weather. Layla was behind me. When she saw the diamond ring, her eyes flew wide open in shock. “That’s the one the shop attendant mentioned!”The moment the woman heard this, she stopped fighting back. Instead, she raised her head and bared her teeth at me. “Tell them to catch me if you dare, Leto! Take a good look at who I am. You wouldn’t dare touch me!”Since she no longer had her sunglasses on, I could finally see her face. She was in her early

When I dragged Layla out of the jewelry shop’s back door, the two police officers followed. The employee passage in the supermarket was so narrow that it could only allow two people walking side-by-side at a time. One of the LED lights above us flickered as it cast the passage in periods of light and darkness. The air was filled with humidity unique to underground passages, along with the smell of disinfectant. “Miss Jackson, how are you sure that she hasn’t left?” the lead officer asked as he ran. I did not slow down, and my heels let out rapid clacks against the cement floor. “Her background might’ve been blurred, but she didn’t manage to hide one thing.”“What is it?”“The sound.”I took out my phone as I ran and dragged the recorded live stream to the point where the woman had started yelling at the end. Then, I turned the volume up to the maximum. Her shrill curses blasted out of the phone’s speaker again, but that was not what I wanted to show them; it was the faint

When the screen lit up, I thought that I would be able to see the coward’s face, but a ridiculous watermelon filter covered her entire face. Even her background had been blurred. All the onlookers went wild, and they started spamming the chat. [You put on a filter? You’re definitely feeling guilty!][You billed someone for two million dollars and won’t show your face? You’re definitely a scammer! Get the police to arrest her!][That sounds like the voice of a pimp!]At the sight of the chat, the watermelon swayed violently, and the woman’s shrill voice pierced my eardrums. “Shut up! What would you poor peasants know?!”After she finished cursing at the viewers, she looked into the camera as if she was staring at me. Then, her voice turned sickeningly sweet again. “Leto, don’t be mad. I just heard that there was a slight misunderstanding at the shop. Your son might be marrying another woman, but my daughter has been with him for a long time, so she needs some compensation, rig
