The banging outside slowly stopped.

Her fans had gotten it out of their systems and left, still swearing.

I got up, walked to the entryway, and looked through the peephole.

The hallway was a mess. A little red paint had seeped in under the door and gone dark.

I left it and went back to the living room to pour myself a whiskey.

The ice knocked against the glass, bright and sharp, too loud in the empty apartment.

Mara's stream was still running.

She had stopped crying and started bringing relationship streamers onto the call to talk about how to handle a man like me.

Every one of them denounced me with righteous outrage, using the ugliest assumptions and the shoddiest logic to tear me apart.

I became public enemy number one, a modern-day Don Juan.

I picked up my phone and texted her back.

"I paid cash for that apartment before we got married. What makes you think I'm signing it over to you?"

The reply came back instantly.

"What makes me think? I have ten million followers now! One word from me, and you're finished! Kade, do you still not get it? You're garbage at the bottom, and I'm standing at the top of the pyramid. Call the apartment compensation for the years I wasted on you. If you're smart, you'll sign the deed over to me tomorrow. If not, I'll drop more dirt on you tomorrow. I'll make sure there's nowhere left for you to go."

I scrolled through those lines with my thumb until the cigarette burned down to the filter and the heat on my fingers snapped me out of it.

Every memory of our three years together collided with the cruelty in that message thread.

I had used every connection I had in the entertainment industry to build her up.

To protect her image, I was willing to be a shadow behind her.

No holding hands in public, no showing my face at parties, and when she was sick in the hospital I could only sit with her as her assistant.

I gave her everything, and she decided I was in her way.

I took a drink. The burn went down my throat and my chest stayed cold.

On her birthday a year ago, the second-biggest donor on her list, a man who drove a Maybach, sent $150,000 in gifts during her livestream. She stared at the screen, unable to stop smiling.

That night, she pushed away the bowl of pasta I handed her and asked whether I could make something of myself instead of cooking all day. After that, the way she looked at me changed.

"Mara, can we just end this cleanly?"

I was trying one last time.

"For the sake of what we had, I don't want to take this all the way."

Her answer came back dripping with contempt.

"What we had? You live off me and you want to talk about what we had? Kade, is there something wrong with your head? Who do you think you are? You're a useless waste of space I've been feeding! You don't want to take this all the way? You don't get to say that! Fine. You want proof the hard way? Tomorrow night at eight, I'm bringing the richest man in New York, Mr. Cole, onto my stream. I'm going to tell him everything about you. I'll have him blacklist you across the entire industry! By the time I'm done, not even a day-labor crew will take you!"

I stared at the message, my finger hovering over the screen for a long time.

The richest man in New York.

Adrian.

He was a man whose slightest move could rattle all of New York, and Mara had somehow gotten to him.

I had to hand it to her. She knew how to network.

She had really spared no expense to take me down.

But she had overlooked one very important thing.

I opened my contacts and scrolled to Adrian's name.

A message from the day before was still there.

"Boss, the matter you assigned has been handled."

"The acquisition of the streaming platform has cleared the final stage."

"We can announce it whenever you want."

I did not answer him. I switched back to Mara's thread.

"Fine. I'll be waiting."

I sent those four words and blocked her.

Once something was beyond saving, there was no reason to soften the ending.

She wanted to play. I would play it out to the end.

I walked to the floor-to-ceiling window and looked out at the neon burning over New York.

In this city countless people claw their way toward something they want, and countless others get greedy and bury themselves.

Mara was the second kind.

She thought that cracking the algorithm meant she could do anything, that catching the wave meant the rules no longer applied to her.

She had no idea whose ground she was standing on.

The next day.The weather in New York was beautiful, not a cloud anywhere.By then, Mara's world had already collapsed. The internet reversed course overnight. The ten million followers who had ached for her yesterday had turned into knives by morning.#MaraForgedEvidence#MaraFraud#MaraBlacklistedShe held three of the top ten trending spots by herself. Our attorneys secured an emergency court order freezing every asset in Mara's name pending the contract claims. She was not just left with nothing. She was more than thirty million dollars in debt. The evidence of the forged medical report and the misappropriated company assets went to the police. She was facing a very long prison sentence.I stood at the window with a cup of coffee.Down below, two officers were putting Mara into a car.Her hair was loose, her eyes unfocused, and she fought them the whole way.A ring of paparazzi had formed around them, flashes going off in waves. That light used to be the thing she wanted most. Now

The comments were moving too fast to read the words. The reversal left every viewer rethinking everything they had believed a minute earlier. The people who had been screaming at me a minute ago went silent, and the screen filled with exclamation marks and jokes at Mara's expense."Oh my god! That is a real heavyweight!""Married in secret for three years, spent a fortune making his wife famous, and she turns on him?""She didn't just dig her own grave. She hit bedrock!""She called a billionaire a freeloader and tried to throw him out of his own house. I'm dying!"Mara sat slumped in the chair, shaking all over. Her phone was buzzing nonstop. Her manager. She answered with a shaking hand and did not dare put it on speaker, but the manager's desperate shouting came through anyway."Mara! Who the hell did you pick a fight with? Moretti Group just issued an industry-wide blacklist notice! Every endorsement is gone! We're looking at penalties we can't pay! Every bank account in your name

Adrian shot up out of his chair. He straightened the hem of his jacket, and the cold arrogance dropped off his face all at once, replaced by a deference so rare it looked almost like nerves.Mara and millions of viewers watched the impossible happen.Adrian buttoned his jacket, then bowed deeply toward the screen, directly toward where I was standing. It was a full ninety-degree bow, a formal gesture of respect. The comments emptied out. With thirty million viewers watching, the stream looked as if someone had hit pause. Not one comment appeared. Not one animation played.Dead silence. The sneer froze on Mara's face, her eyes round and her mouth open, her brain clearly unable to process what it was looking at."Mr. Cole?"She stammered it out, her voice shaking apart."What... what are you doing?"Adrian ignored her.He held the bow, and his voice came through the mic loud and clear."Boss, I sincerely apologize. This is my failure. I should never have let this mess reach you. The asse

The door swung open and I walked into the room, straight into the frame.Mara was crying at the screen. She caught movement out of the corner of her eye, whipped around, and froze the moment she saw me.Shock, panic, and fury all mixed together."Kade?"She screamed, her voice cracking."What are you doing here? Who let you in?"The comments stopped for a second, then went off."Holy crap, the scumbag showed up!""He actually dares to show his face? The nerve of this guy!""Look at that smug face, I want to punch him through the screen!"I ignored her screaming and I ignored the abuse filling the screen.I just stood in front of the camera and looked at Adrian on the right half of the screen.Mara caught up and started shouting into her mic."Mr. Cole! Do you see this? This is the man who beats me! He's harassing me right now! Security! Security! Get this lunatic out of here!"Still shouting, she grabbed the glass off the desk and threw it at me.I tipped my head aside and it shattered

The call request went out.Thirty million pairs of eyes watched the loading circle spin on the right side of the screen.Mara nervously fixed her hair and pushed her expression into something more wounded, more wronged.Ding.The call connected. The screen split in two.On the right was a spacious office. Adrian sat behind a large mahogany desk in a black suit, expressionless, his presence imposing even through the screen. He gave a small nod, his face still blank.Off camera, his hand turned the ring on his finger. That was the signal we had agreed on. He was ready. The comments went blank for a beat, then came back harder than before."Holy hell, it really is Mr. Cole!""That presence! I can feel the power through the screen!""That is what a real boss looks like! Kade isn't fit to shine his shoes!"The second Mara saw Adrian, she put on a face that was deferential and wounded at the same time."Good evening, Mr. Cole. I'm sorry to take up your night."Adrian's face did not move."Ms

Seven fifty in the evening.Ten minutes until Mara's stream of the century.Every major platform had her announcement on the front page. Onlookers poured into the stream early, and the comments came so thick they covered the screen."Selling popcorn and water up front!""Here for the moment this scumbag drops the act!""I heard Mr. Cole is coming on tonight. That's huge!"I sat in the leather chair in my study with three monitors in front of me.On the left, Mara's stream. In the middle, the company's data monitoring system. On the right, a live feed from legal showing the asset freeze in progress.Everything was where it needed to be.Eight o'clock exactly. The stream flickered and Mara's face filled the center of the screen, polished, without a flaw on it.She had done her makeup to look bare and exhausted, eyes faintly red, lips pale, an oversized white shirt hanging off her. She looked pitiful."Hey, guys. Good evening."Her voice cracked on the first word."Thank you all for looki
