Chapter 2

Author: Congrats
When Ezra got home, he didn't sit on the couch and wait up for Odette like he used to. He simply freshened up and went straight to bed.

He was drifting in and out of sleep when he caught the scent of perfume. He opened his eyes to find that Odette had come home at some point and was standing by the bed, staring at him without blinking.

He hadn't expected her to come back tonight, and surprise flickered across his face. "What are you doing home?"

Odette's eyes darkened, and her voice went cold. "You're awfully relaxed about this, Ezra. I'm out with another man, and you can still sleep?"

It took Ezra a moment to catch on, and he let out a soft scoff. "He's not a stranger. He's just your dear little brother, so why should I worry?"

Hearing her own words thrown back at her, Odette was speechless for a moment. She came closer and leaned down over him. "Are you still upset about me and Rafe—"

"No." Ezra fought back the discomfort of having her so close and cut her off. "That's all in the past, isn't it?"

"Then why didn't you call and tell me to come home? Why didn't you wait up for me?" She nuzzled into the crook of his neck.

"You never used to go to sleep until I got home, and now you won't even leave a light on for me. I—"

Ezra cut her off, a flicker of impatience in his eyes. "Didn't you say that was annoying?"

Odette stopped short, and every word caught in her throat. She clearly remembered all those ugly fights too. She opened her mouth, and her voice softened.

"An emergency came in today, so I didn't stay at Rafe's long. If it bothers you this much, from now on, I'll keep my distance from him. Don't be mad anymore, okay?"

Ezra had heard that promise more times than he could count.

In the past, he would've argued with her and gone through every way she and Rafe crossed the line, along with every hurt he'd swallowed. But now it all felt pointless, and he couldn't be bothered to say more than a half-hearted reply. "Got it. Can we go to sleep now?"

Odette's expression stiffened for a split second, then she pressed a hand to her stomach as if to win his sympathy. "My stomach hurts. Could you make me some soup?"

Whenever Odette used to come home from a late shift, Ezra would make her a bowl of chicken noodle soup, and having something hot always eased her stomachaches a little. But once the love and concern were gone, all that was left was irritation at being woken up.

Ezra burrowed deeper under the blanket and turned his back to her. "I'm tired, and I have to get up early tomorrow to take care of my mom. Make it yourself. Close the door on your way out."

Silence hung behind him. After a long while, heavy footsteps sounded, and the door slammed shut. The bedroom went quiet again, and the faint sound of a car starting drifted up from downstairs. Ezra rolled over and fell back asleep.

The next morning, he got up early, packed the soup he'd made into a container, and took a cab to the hospital.

Maureen looked much better, and when she saw Ezra, she scolded him gently. "Why didn't you sleep in? I have a caregiver here, so you don't need to keep running over. Now that you and Odette are remarried, focus on building a life together."

Ezra gave a low hum in reply and poured her a bowl of soup.

Back when Maureen started treatment, Ezra had pretended he still wasn't over Odette and wanted to remarry her so his mother could focus on getting better, and only then had she stopped standing in his way.

After the remarriage, he only ever told Maureen the good news, so she believed he and Odette had patched things up. Only Ezra knew this marriage had been over in all but name for a long time, and he was simply waiting for his chance to leave Odette for good.

Not wanting to talk about Odette any further, Ezra used paying the hospital bill as an excuse to step out of the room. He had just reached the hallway when he saw Rafe carrying Odette into the ER in a hurry.

A young nurse holding a patient chart spoke up. "What happened to Dr. Fairbanks? Is that the cute younger husband everyone's been talking about?"

"I heard it's a ruptured ovarian cyst." The nurse at the front desk grinned.

"Dr. Fairbanks sure has stamina. She got called in for an emergency in the middle of the night, operated for five hours straight, and didn't get home to rest until almost dawn. She's barely been home since then, and now this. Younger guys really are something else. He clearly doesn't hold back."

The two nurses exchanged a knowing look and giggled.

Ezra looked away, unmoved, and turned to head back to the room, only to lock eyes with Odette the moment he turned around.

A bouquet of daisies still wet with dew sat quietly in front of the cold headstone. The petals were fresh, so they had obviously been left there not long ago. Beside them sat a neatly wrapped slice of lemon cake, which had been Maureen's favorite treat.Odette's heart lurched, and a thought exploded in her numb, deadened mind with devastating joy and disbelieving terror. Ezra had been here. He wasn't dead! Ezra was alive! An indescribable rush of joy shot straight to her head, making her ears ring. The black sedan she'd glimpsed when she got out of her car flashed through her mind. Was it him?Odette spun around and practically stumbled down the steps toward her car. Her tires screeched against the pavement as the car shot forward like a bullet, speeding off in the direction where she remembered the other car disappearing.Odette stared straight ahead, her eyes straining to pierce the darkness for any possible trace of it. What if she couldn't catch up? What if she did, and it was

"The baby?" Odette's voice held the faintest trace of mockery."Do I need to remind you how this baby came about?"The color drained from Rafe's face. He opened his mouth as if to explain, but in the end, he didn't say anything. What was there to explain? If she was asking him that, she obviously knew he'd drugged her water that night.Odette looked away coldly. Without another word, she picked up the album and started to walk around him and out of the study."Don't go! Ezra's dead. From now on, the three of us can be a family and build a good life together, okay?"He lunged at her and wrapped his arms tightly around her waist from behind, his voice choked with tears. "Did you forget how good you used to be to me? Did you forget—""I didn't forget." Odette cut him off, her voice flat. "It was all an act. You and your mother handed me a way out, so I took it."Her words pierced straight through Rafe's last line of defense like a knife.Like a cornered animal, he shoved her shoul

Rafe watched Odette's face go rigid and kept talking. "You haven't looked at your checkup results yet, have you? You're pregnant with my baby. You're already a month along."You know my mom has always liked you. As long as you remarry me, she'll use every connection and resource she has to help you climb straight to the top of the medical world. But if you dare get rid of this baby, my family can just as easily make sure no medical center ever hires you."He had dangled the bait and shown his hand at the same time. Ezra was dead anyway. As long as he kept her by his side, she would forget Ezra eventually and fall in love with him again, and he was confident enough to believe it.Odette stood there without moving. The rage that had been ready to burn everything down seemed to turn to ice in an instant. After a few seconds of silence, the corners of Odette's mouth slowly curved upward. "Fine. Let's remarry."Dana's eyes went wide as she stared at Odette. Of course, she hadn't change

In the end, though, Dana didn't say anything. She turned and left the room.Over the next few days, Odette took her medication on time and went along with her treatment. She didn't bring up Ezra, the fire, or anything else, as if it had all been swept away with time. But on her late-night rounds, Dana would sometimes find Odette lying perfectly still, staring at the ceiling with her eyes wide open. The faint glow of the monitor reflected in them, and they seemed to have no bottom.Dana couldn't help sighing to herself. More than once, she almost told Odette the truth, but she felt she had even less right to make that decision for Ezra.Rafe came by every day, but the tenderness Odette used to have when she looked at him was gone, and all that was left was cold distance.A week later, Odette suddenly spoke to Dana, who had been at her side the whole time, looking worried. It was the first time since waking up that she had asked for anything. "Where's my phone?"Dana paused, then q

Odette heard a deafening ringing in her ears, and then she couldn't hear anything at all."That's impossible!"Her fingers tightened inch by inch around Dana's white coat, her knuckles going pale as if they might split, and fresh red bloomed through the bandage around her wrist."The rescue crews must have taken him to another hospital. Yes, that has to be it."Odette let go abruptly and staggered to her feet. "I need to find out where they took Ezra."But she had already used up all her strength, and the moment she stood, she collapsed onto the floor.Dana caught her on reflex and sighed. "Odette, the heat at the center of the fire was too intense, and the building could have collapsed at any moment. The rescue was incredibly difficult."According to the fire department's records and our hospital's admission logs, you really were the only one brought in that night."The words hit Odette like a thunderclap going off inside her head. She went rigid, and her hand slowly slipped

Ezra's eyes went wide. Thinking Odette was trying to escape, he lunged at her on instinct and tackled her hard to the floor.Odette coughed violently a few times and stopped resisting. In fact, that one struggle seemed to have used up her last burst of strength, and once he had her pinned, she went completely limp.Odette looked up at his face, and in the ever brighter, ever hotter glow of the fire, she slowly smiled. It held a gentleness that was close to relief, along with a bottomless sorrow. Her lips moved as the thick smoke filled her lungs, and her voice was so faint he could barely hear it, yet every word burned itself into his ears. "Maybe this is for the best. That way, I can find you in another life and make things right."Ezra froze. When he looked into Odette's eyes, there was no love and no hatred, only a quiet sense of peace.Behind him, an even fiercer wave of flames swept in with a thunderous roar.Just before he lost consciousness, he thought he saw the bedroom d
