Chapter 3

Author: Congrats
Odette stood at the ER entrance, her face pale. She had clearly heard the nurses' gossip too, but she said nothing and just stared at Ezra, as if waiting for him to get jealous and make a scene.

But Ezra only looked at her calmly and didn't say a word.

He seemed completely detached from the whole thing, and the panic on Odette's face gradually settled into something heavier. "Don't you have anything you want to ask me?"

Ezra was quiet for a moment before he answered. "No."

"It's not what you think between Rafe and me," Odette explained. "The pressure inside the cyst built up and caused a spontaneous rupture, and he just happened to give me a ride to the hospital.

"Besides, people here don't know Rafe and I are divorced, which is why they got the wrong idea. This weekend, I'm taking my coworkers out to dinner, and I'll bring you along to meet them."

Odette had only transferred to her current hospital on a promotion after their divorce. When they remarried, they simply signed the paperwork without holding a reception, so nobody at the hospital knew who Ezra was.

But he didn't need anyone's acknowledgement. After all, before long, he and Odette would have nothing to do with each other anymore.

Ezra opened his mouth to tell her not to bother, but a doctor walked over and cut in before he could. "Dr. Fairbanks, your husband's looking for you. You'd better go see him."

Odette said she would, but she didn't correct him. Before she left, she turned to Ezra. "Honey, head back to the room for now. I'll come see Mom when I get a chance."

Unsurprisingly, Odette never showed up. Fortunately, Ezra was no longer the man who would sit there like a fool, waiting for her with his hopes up.

That weekend, Ezra stayed at the hospital with Maureen as usual, but for once, Odette actually came by the room. She asked about Maureen's health as she always did, then made the excuse that work kept her too busy to visit often.

To be fair, Odette really was busy. But no matter how busy she was, she wasn't completely without free time, especially when her office was just upstairs. If she'd really wanted to, she could have found time to stop by. Yet apart from scheduled checkups, she hadn't come by even once.

Meanwhile, she made a point of playing chess and going grocery shopping with Rafe's parents, and she even sat through romance movies with Rafe, the kind she considered "a waste of time and life." It wasn't that she had no time. She simply gave all her free time to Rafe and his family.

Ezra had long since stopped caring, though, and he certainly had no use for her fake concern.

"Mom, if you're not feeling well, call me anytime," Odette said suddenly. "Ezra and I have a dinner to get to, so I'll take him with me now."

Being put on the spot like that made Ezra frown without meaning to. He was about to refuse when Maureen pushed him out of the room. "Yes, yes, go! You young people should get out more instead of always being stuck in the hospital."

With no other choice, Ezra followed Odette to the dinner.

The moment they walked in, the lively crowd fell silent all at once.

"Dr. Fairbanks, didn't you say you were bringing your husband?" someone asked, puzzled. "Who's this?"

Odette took the opening. "I wanted to use tonight's dinner to formally introduce—"

Before she could finish, the door to the private dining room swung open, and a crisp voice came from the doorway. "Oh, everyone's here. Perfect, why don't we do the introductions together?"

A bouquet of daisies still wet with dew sat quietly in front of the cold headstone. The petals were fresh, so they had obviously been left there not long ago. Beside them sat a neatly wrapped slice of lemon cake, which had been Maureen's favorite treat.Odette's heart lurched, and a thought exploded in her numb, deadened mind with devastating joy and disbelieving terror. Ezra had been here. He wasn't dead! Ezra was alive! An indescribable rush of joy shot straight to her head, making her ears ring. The black sedan she'd glimpsed when she got out of her car flashed through her mind. Was it him?Odette spun around and practically stumbled down the steps toward her car. Her tires screeched against the pavement as the car shot forward like a bullet, speeding off in the direction where she remembered the other car disappearing.Odette stared straight ahead, her eyes straining to pierce the darkness for any possible trace of it. What if she couldn't catch up? What if she did, and it was

"The baby?" Odette's voice held the faintest trace of mockery."Do I need to remind you how this baby came about?"The color drained from Rafe's face. He opened his mouth as if to explain, but in the end, he didn't say anything. What was there to explain? If she was asking him that, she obviously knew he'd drugged her water that night.Odette looked away coldly. Without another word, she picked up the album and started to walk around him and out of the study."Don't go! Ezra's dead. From now on, the three of us can be a family and build a good life together, okay?"He lunged at her and wrapped his arms tightly around her waist from behind, his voice choked with tears. "Did you forget how good you used to be to me? Did you forget—""I didn't forget." Odette cut him off, her voice flat. "It was all an act. You and your mother handed me a way out, so I took it."Her words pierced straight through Rafe's last line of defense like a knife.Like a cornered animal, he shoved her shoul

Rafe watched Odette's face go rigid and kept talking. "You haven't looked at your checkup results yet, have you? You're pregnant with my baby. You're already a month along."You know my mom has always liked you. As long as you remarry me, she'll use every connection and resource she has to help you climb straight to the top of the medical world. But if you dare get rid of this baby, my family can just as easily make sure no medical center ever hires you."He had dangled the bait and shown his hand at the same time. Ezra was dead anyway. As long as he kept her by his side, she would forget Ezra eventually and fall in love with him again, and he was confident enough to believe it.Odette stood there without moving. The rage that had been ready to burn everything down seemed to turn to ice in an instant. After a few seconds of silence, the corners of Odette's mouth slowly curved upward. "Fine. Let's remarry."Dana's eyes went wide as she stared at Odette. Of course, she hadn't change

In the end, though, Dana didn't say anything. She turned and left the room.Over the next few days, Odette took her medication on time and went along with her treatment. She didn't bring up Ezra, the fire, or anything else, as if it had all been swept away with time. But on her late-night rounds, Dana would sometimes find Odette lying perfectly still, staring at the ceiling with her eyes wide open. The faint glow of the monitor reflected in them, and they seemed to have no bottom.Dana couldn't help sighing to herself. More than once, she almost told Odette the truth, but she felt she had even less right to make that decision for Ezra.Rafe came by every day, but the tenderness Odette used to have when she looked at him was gone, and all that was left was cold distance.A week later, Odette suddenly spoke to Dana, who had been at her side the whole time, looking worried. It was the first time since waking up that she had asked for anything. "Where's my phone?"Dana paused, then q

Odette heard a deafening ringing in her ears, and then she couldn't hear anything at all."That's impossible!"Her fingers tightened inch by inch around Dana's white coat, her knuckles going pale as if they might split, and fresh red bloomed through the bandage around her wrist."The rescue crews must have taken him to another hospital. Yes, that has to be it."Odette let go abruptly and staggered to her feet. "I need to find out where they took Ezra."But she had already used up all her strength, and the moment she stood, she collapsed onto the floor.Dana caught her on reflex and sighed. "Odette, the heat at the center of the fire was too intense, and the building could have collapsed at any moment. The rescue was incredibly difficult."According to the fire department's records and our hospital's admission logs, you really were the only one brought in that night."The words hit Odette like a thunderclap going off inside her head. She went rigid, and her hand slowly slipped

Ezra's eyes went wide. Thinking Odette was trying to escape, he lunged at her on instinct and tackled her hard to the floor.Odette coughed violently a few times and stopped resisting. In fact, that one struggle seemed to have used up her last burst of strength, and once he had her pinned, she went completely limp.Odette looked up at his face, and in the ever brighter, ever hotter glow of the fire, she slowly smiled. It held a gentleness that was close to relief, along with a bottomless sorrow. Her lips moved as the thick smoke filled her lungs, and her voice was so faint he could barely hear it, yet every word burned itself into his ears. "Maybe this is for the best. That way, I can find you in another life and make things right."Ezra froze. When he looked into Odette's eyes, there was no love and no hatred, only a quiet sense of peace.Behind him, an even fiercer wave of flames swept in with a thunderous roar.Just before he lost consciousness, he thought he saw the bedroom d
