Chapter 6

Author: Congrats
Rafe broke off, and the smile on his lips froze. "Looks like I came at a bad time. Sorry for interrupting your little moment as husband and wife."

With that, he turned on his crutches to leave, but he caught his foot on the threshold and fell to the floor.

Odette rushed over and held him in her arms as she helped him up. "You twisted your ankle. Why are you running around?"

She sounded reproachful, but her face was full of concern.

Rafe made a show of pushing her away, looking stubborn and hurt. "Do you know how long I waited for you? If you wanted to stay with your husband, you should've just said so. I would've had my girlfriend come pick me up. Why leave me sitting there waiting for nothing?"

"Didn't you promise me you'd break up with her?" Odette demanded without thinking, but the hurt look on Rafe's face softened her right away.

"Don't be mad. It's my fault. Ezra's badly hurt, so I just stayed a little longer to go over a few things with him. Don't go reading into it."

Rafe turned to Ezra, who was lying in the hospital bed. "Are you okay, Ezra? This is all my fault. If only I'd kept my balance when you grabbed me."

Ezra couldn't help laughing at his act.

Rafe's expression stiffened for a moment. Odette clearly felt for him, and the look she gave Ezra carried a hint of displeasure.

"Ezra, Rafe may not have managed to save you, but he did everything he could. Instead of being grateful, you're sneering at him. Is that how you treat someone who tried to save your life?

"If it weren't for you, Rafe wouldn't have gotten hurt either. You don't just owe him a thank-you. You owe him an apology too!"

Ezra's mouth twitched. Not wanting to waste any more breath on them, he simply closed his eyes.

His refusal to listen sparked a sudden flare of anger in Odette. "Ezra, if I remember correctly, your mom's surgery is in three days. If you still want me to operate as planned, apologize to Rafe!"

Ezra's eyes flew open, and the heart he thought had long since gone numb gave a sharp twist of pain.

Odette was about to stop him when he yanked out his IV, walked over to Rafe, and stood stiffly in front of him.

"I'm sorry you got hurt because of me, Mr. Ellington." While the two of them stared in shock, he went on in the same flat voice.

"And thank you for saving my life, Mr. Ellington."

A smug smile spread across Rafe's lips. He was about to say something when Odette suddenly let go of him and reached for Ezra's bleeding hand.

Ezra stepped back, dodging her touch, and faced her with cold formality. "Please, Dr. Fairbanks, do everything you can to save my mother."

Odette's hand froze in midair, and a heavy weight settled on her chest until she could hardly breathe. It took her a long moment to force the words out. "Ezra, your mom is my mom. Of course, I'll do everything I can to make her better. You don't have to be so formal with me."

Ezra's lowered lashes trembled slightly. "Then thank you on my mother's behalf, Dr. Fairbanks."

Odette's fingers curled at her side. She stepped forward and took his hand, and when Ezra instinctively tried to pull away, she held on tight. "Don't move."

Ezra stopped struggling and let her lead him back to the bed, where she reinserted the IV into his hand. He told Maureen he'd found a new job and was away for training out of town just so she wouldn't worry. For the next few days, he stayed in the hospital and focused on recovering.

Odette came by every day at mealtimes to keep him company. Ezra never argued or made a fuss, and he agreed to whatever she said, which left her feeling strangely powerless, as if every effort she made just sank into nothing.

The night before his mother's surgery, Ezra had a lawyer draw up the divorce papers before he went to her room. When Maureen saw him, she rallied her strength and chatted with him for a while.

After she fell asleep, Ezra took out his phone and texted Odette to remind her of the surgery time.

But the next day, Odette disappeared.

A bouquet of daisies still wet with dew sat quietly in front of the cold headstone. The petals were fresh, so they had obviously been left there not long ago. Beside them sat a neatly wrapped slice of lemon cake, which had been Maureen's favorite treat.Odette's heart lurched, and a thought exploded in her numb, deadened mind with devastating joy and disbelieving terror. Ezra had been here. He wasn't dead! Ezra was alive! An indescribable rush of joy shot straight to her head, making her ears ring. The black sedan she'd glimpsed when she got out of her car flashed through her mind. Was it him?Odette spun around and practically stumbled down the steps toward her car. Her tires screeched against the pavement as the car shot forward like a bullet, speeding off in the direction where she remembered the other car disappearing.Odette stared straight ahead, her eyes straining to pierce the darkness for any possible trace of it. What if she couldn't catch up? What if she did, and it was

"The baby?" Odette's voice held the faintest trace of mockery."Do I need to remind you how this baby came about?"The color drained from Rafe's face. He opened his mouth as if to explain, but in the end, he didn't say anything. What was there to explain? If she was asking him that, she obviously knew he'd drugged her water that night.Odette looked away coldly. Without another word, she picked up the album and started to walk around him and out of the study."Don't go! Ezra's dead. From now on, the three of us can be a family and build a good life together, okay?"He lunged at her and wrapped his arms tightly around her waist from behind, his voice choked with tears. "Did you forget how good you used to be to me? Did you forget—""I didn't forget." Odette cut him off, her voice flat. "It was all an act. You and your mother handed me a way out, so I took it."Her words pierced straight through Rafe's last line of defense like a knife.Like a cornered animal, he shoved her shoul

Rafe watched Odette's face go rigid and kept talking. "You haven't looked at your checkup results yet, have you? You're pregnant with my baby. You're already a month along."You know my mom has always liked you. As long as you remarry me, she'll use every connection and resource she has to help you climb straight to the top of the medical world. But if you dare get rid of this baby, my family can just as easily make sure no medical center ever hires you."He had dangled the bait and shown his hand at the same time. Ezra was dead anyway. As long as he kept her by his side, she would forget Ezra eventually and fall in love with him again, and he was confident enough to believe it.Odette stood there without moving. The rage that had been ready to burn everything down seemed to turn to ice in an instant. After a few seconds of silence, the corners of Odette's mouth slowly curved upward. "Fine. Let's remarry."Dana's eyes went wide as she stared at Odette. Of course, she hadn't change

In the end, though, Dana didn't say anything. She turned and left the room.Over the next few days, Odette took her medication on time and went along with her treatment. She didn't bring up Ezra, the fire, or anything else, as if it had all been swept away with time. But on her late-night rounds, Dana would sometimes find Odette lying perfectly still, staring at the ceiling with her eyes wide open. The faint glow of the monitor reflected in them, and they seemed to have no bottom.Dana couldn't help sighing to herself. More than once, she almost told Odette the truth, but she felt she had even less right to make that decision for Ezra.Rafe came by every day, but the tenderness Odette used to have when she looked at him was gone, and all that was left was cold distance.A week later, Odette suddenly spoke to Dana, who had been at her side the whole time, looking worried. It was the first time since waking up that she had asked for anything. "Where's my phone?"Dana paused, then q

Odette heard a deafening ringing in her ears, and then she couldn't hear anything at all."That's impossible!"Her fingers tightened inch by inch around Dana's white coat, her knuckles going pale as if they might split, and fresh red bloomed through the bandage around her wrist."The rescue crews must have taken him to another hospital. Yes, that has to be it."Odette let go abruptly and staggered to her feet. "I need to find out where they took Ezra."But she had already used up all her strength, and the moment she stood, she collapsed onto the floor.Dana caught her on reflex and sighed. "Odette, the heat at the center of the fire was too intense, and the building could have collapsed at any moment. The rescue was incredibly difficult."According to the fire department's records and our hospital's admission logs, you really were the only one brought in that night."The words hit Odette like a thunderclap going off inside her head. She went rigid, and her hand slowly slipped

Ezra's eyes went wide. Thinking Odette was trying to escape, he lunged at her on instinct and tackled her hard to the floor.Odette coughed violently a few times and stopped resisting. In fact, that one struggle seemed to have used up her last burst of strength, and once he had her pinned, she went completely limp.Odette looked up at his face, and in the ever brighter, ever hotter glow of the fire, she slowly smiled. It held a gentleness that was close to relief, along with a bottomless sorrow. Her lips moved as the thick smoke filled her lungs, and her voice was so faint he could barely hear it, yet every word burned itself into his ears. "Maybe this is for the best. That way, I can find you in another life and make things right."Ezra froze. When he looked into Odette's eyes, there was no love and no hatred, only a quiet sense of peace.Behind him, an even fiercer wave of flames swept in with a thunderous roar.Just before he lost consciousness, he thought he saw the bedroom d
