Chapter 5

Author: Congrats
Rafe's face darkened instantly, as if Ezra had hit a nerve. "Then today, I'll show you exactly where you stand with Odette!"

He looked past Ezra at the passing traffic, and a vicious glint flashed in his eyes. "Drop dead!"

Rafe raised his hands and shoved Ezra with all his strength. Caught off guard, Ezra stumbled and fell backward.

In the chaos, he instinctively grabbed the hand Rafe hadn't pulled back yet, and Rafe let out a low cry as the sudden pull dragged him toward the road too.

At that exact moment, a white sedan came speeding toward them.

In a split second, Ezra saw Odette rush over and pull Rafe into her arms, and then the car slammed into him and knocked him to the ground. Searing pain tore through his entire body. Ezra lay sprawled on the pavement as warm blood poured out of him.

"Ezra!" Odette's heart lurched when she saw him lying in a pool of blood. She called 911, and for once, her face was full of panic.

Ezra tried to smile, but he coughed up a mouthful of blood and passed out.

When he came to, he was in the hospital. The moment Ezra opened his eyes, a piercing pain shot through his whole body.

"Ezra! Are you awake?" Odette's voice rang out.

Ezra turned toward the sound and stared at her blankly, still struggling to process where he was. It wasn't until his eyes focused on her worn-out face that he finally came back to himself.

"How are you feeling? Does anything else hurt?" Odette grabbed his hand, her voice trembling slightly.

Ezra didn't answer. He just slowly but firmly pulled his hand out of hers.

Odette's hand froze in midair, and her expression changed. Assuming Ezra resented her for not saving him first, she rushed to explain.

"Ezra, Rafe is my mentor's son. When he stayed behind in Port Seward, I promised his parents I'd take care of him. I can't let anything happen to him. You—"

"I know." Ezra cut off the same excuse he'd heard a hundred times. "Besides, who you save is your call. You don't have to explain yourself to me."

"Then please forgive me." Odette took his hand again and coaxed him softly. "As long as you forgive me, I'll do anything."

"Anything?"

Relieved that he was finally willing to talk to her, Odette quickly agreed. "Yes, whatever makes you happy."

"Then I want Rafe to go to prison. He shoved me into the road and nearly got me killed. That's attempted murder, and I'm pressing charges."

"Ezra, Rafe got hurt trying to save you too. While you were unconscious, he kept blaming himself for not holding on to you." Odette pinched the bridge of her nose and let out a soft sigh.

"I know my relationship with Rafe bothers you, but can you stop being so biased against him? He really wants to get along with you."

Ezra's face showed no reaction, as if he'd seen this coming all along. He simply looked up and gave Odette a cool glance. "Whether it's bias or fact, all you have to do is pull the security footage and you'll—"

Before he could finish, a nurse pushed the door open and walked in. "Dr. Fairbanks, your husb— Mr. Ellington just finished his tests, and he's been asking for you."

Odette murmured an acknowledgment and glanced at Ezra without thinking, hesitating as if she wanted to say something.

"Go ahead," Ezra said before she could speak.

Odette's eyes snapped up to him, a flicker of surprise in them. In the past, whenever Rafe called her away, Ezra would do everything he could to make her stay, but now he was actually sending her off himself.

Odette stared at him, searching his face for any sign that he was just putting on a brave front. There was none. He was so calm that he seemed completely detached.

A strange feeling welled up inside her, mixed with an irritation she couldn't explain. Finally, Odette couldn't hold back. "If you want me to stay, I—"

"No need. Just go." Ezra cut her off with a suffocating calm. "I really don't need you here."

Odette flinched as if something had struck her hard. His words left a sudden hollow in her chest, but it quickly filled with an even deeper anger.

"You don't need me?" She leaned in close, her voice sharp.

"Then who do you need?"

Ezra instinctively pulled back. Watching him recoil from her only fueled her fury. Odette bit her lip and was about to say something when the door burst open.

Rafe hobbled in on crutches. "Odette—"

A bouquet of daisies still wet with dew sat quietly in front of the cold headstone. The petals were fresh, so they had obviously been left there not long ago. Beside them sat a neatly wrapped slice of lemon cake, which had been Maureen's favorite treat.Odette's heart lurched, and a thought exploded in her numb, deadened mind with devastating joy and disbelieving terror. Ezra had been here. He wasn't dead! Ezra was alive! An indescribable rush of joy shot straight to her head, making her ears ring. The black sedan she'd glimpsed when she got out of her car flashed through her mind. Was it him?Odette spun around and practically stumbled down the steps toward her car. Her tires screeched against the pavement as the car shot forward like a bullet, speeding off in the direction where she remembered the other car disappearing.Odette stared straight ahead, her eyes straining to pierce the darkness for any possible trace of it. What if she couldn't catch up? What if she did, and it was

"The baby?" Odette's voice held the faintest trace of mockery."Do I need to remind you how this baby came about?"The color drained from Rafe's face. He opened his mouth as if to explain, but in the end, he didn't say anything. What was there to explain? If she was asking him that, she obviously knew he'd drugged her water that night.Odette looked away coldly. Without another word, she picked up the album and started to walk around him and out of the study."Don't go! Ezra's dead. From now on, the three of us can be a family and build a good life together, okay?"He lunged at her and wrapped his arms tightly around her waist from behind, his voice choked with tears. "Did you forget how good you used to be to me? Did you forget—""I didn't forget." Odette cut him off, her voice flat. "It was all an act. You and your mother handed me a way out, so I took it."Her words pierced straight through Rafe's last line of defense like a knife.Like a cornered animal, he shoved her shoul

Rafe watched Odette's face go rigid and kept talking. "You haven't looked at your checkup results yet, have you? You're pregnant with my baby. You're already a month along."You know my mom has always liked you. As long as you remarry me, she'll use every connection and resource she has to help you climb straight to the top of the medical world. But if you dare get rid of this baby, my family can just as easily make sure no medical center ever hires you."He had dangled the bait and shown his hand at the same time. Ezra was dead anyway. As long as he kept her by his side, she would forget Ezra eventually and fall in love with him again, and he was confident enough to believe it.Odette stood there without moving. The rage that had been ready to burn everything down seemed to turn to ice in an instant. After a few seconds of silence, the corners of Odette's mouth slowly curved upward. "Fine. Let's remarry."Dana's eyes went wide as she stared at Odette. Of course, she hadn't change

In the end, though, Dana didn't say anything. She turned and left the room.Over the next few days, Odette took her medication on time and went along with her treatment. She didn't bring up Ezra, the fire, or anything else, as if it had all been swept away with time. But on her late-night rounds, Dana would sometimes find Odette lying perfectly still, staring at the ceiling with her eyes wide open. The faint glow of the monitor reflected in them, and they seemed to have no bottom.Dana couldn't help sighing to herself. More than once, she almost told Odette the truth, but she felt she had even less right to make that decision for Ezra.Rafe came by every day, but the tenderness Odette used to have when she looked at him was gone, and all that was left was cold distance.A week later, Odette suddenly spoke to Dana, who had been at her side the whole time, looking worried. It was the first time since waking up that she had asked for anything. "Where's my phone?"Dana paused, then q

Odette heard a deafening ringing in her ears, and then she couldn't hear anything at all."That's impossible!"Her fingers tightened inch by inch around Dana's white coat, her knuckles going pale as if they might split, and fresh red bloomed through the bandage around her wrist."The rescue crews must have taken him to another hospital. Yes, that has to be it."Odette let go abruptly and staggered to her feet. "I need to find out where they took Ezra."But she had already used up all her strength, and the moment she stood, she collapsed onto the floor.Dana caught her on reflex and sighed. "Odette, the heat at the center of the fire was too intense, and the building could have collapsed at any moment. The rescue was incredibly difficult."According to the fire department's records and our hospital's admission logs, you really were the only one brought in that night."The words hit Odette like a thunderclap going off inside her head. She went rigid, and her hand slowly slipped

Ezra's eyes went wide. Thinking Odette was trying to escape, he lunged at her on instinct and tackled her hard to the floor.Odette coughed violently a few times and stopped resisting. In fact, that one struggle seemed to have used up her last burst of strength, and once he had her pinned, she went completely limp.Odette looked up at his face, and in the ever brighter, ever hotter glow of the fire, she slowly smiled. It held a gentleness that was close to relief, along with a bottomless sorrow. Her lips moved as the thick smoke filled her lungs, and her voice was so faint he could barely hear it, yet every word burned itself into his ears. "Maybe this is for the best. That way, I can find you in another life and make things right."Ezra froze. When he looked into Odette's eyes, there was no love and no hatred, only a quiet sense of peace.Behind him, an even fiercer wave of flames swept in with a thunderous roar.Just before he lost consciousness, he thought he saw the bedroom d
