Chapter 8

Author: Congrats
Before he heard the news, Ezra had thought he would fall apart and cry until he couldn't breathe. Instead, he felt strangely calm, as if the ending he'd seen coming had finally arrived.

He calmly watched the grief on the doctor's face, calmly signed the death certificate, and calmly watched as they wheeled his mother out. It wasn't until he pulled back the white sheet himself and saw her familiar face, now gray and lifeless, that it finally hit him that he no longer had a mother.

In this whole wide world, he had no home left to go back to.

Tears blurred his vision, and Ezra finally broke down and sobbed like a child.

He went through all the paperwork in a daze, then carried his mother's urn back to his hometown for the funeral.

That was when Odette showed up. She stood in the ‌funeral hall, travel-worn, her face full of guilt as she looked at Ezra. "I'm sorry, I—"

"Get out," Ezra rasped, cutting her off.

"Watch your mouth, Ezra!" Rafe charged forward.

"We rushed all the way back to pay our respects to your mom, and this is the thanks we get?"

Ezra caught the faint glint of satisfaction in Rafe's eyes and raised his hand to slap him, but Odette grabbed his wrist.

She shielded Rafe behind her and explained with forced patience. "Ezra, this is on me, but it has nothing to do with Rafe. His mother suddenly got seriously ill, his ankle still hadn't healed, and his father has done so much for me.

"I just couldn't stop worrying. But I worked out the timing. As long as I made it back before the surgery—"

"And did you make it back?" Ezra yanked his hand free and swept everything off the table at her.

"You killed my mom, Odette!"

Odette stood still and took the full force of his anger. Rafe stepped forward to stop Ezra, his face full of concern, but a glass smashed against his temple.

Odette's expression changed instantly. She shoved Ezra hard and snapped, "If you're angry, take it out on me. Don't hurt Rafe!

"I didn't tell you before because I was worried about how you'd take it, but your mother's condition wasn't good. Even if the surgery had worked, she would've suffered through round after round of chemo. Maybe this way isn't such a bad—"

"Get out!" Ezra was shaking so hard with rage that he couldn't even finish a sentence.

Odette looked at him and hesitated, but in the end, she only said, "Take some time to calm down. I'll come see you later."

With that, she gently touched the scrape on Rafe's temple and hurried him into the car. As the car sped off, Ezra's phone suddenly chimed with messages from Rafe.

"My condolences, Ezra. I told Odette my mom just had a little cold, but she insisted on ditching you and your mom to come visit her with me.

"But hey, who told you to keep pestering her to remarry you? You've only got yourself to blame.

"Ever think maybe you're the jinx that killed your mom? If you'd just kept your head down and stopped wanting what was never yours, your sickly mom might've lived a few more years."

A drop of liquid suddenly smeared across the screen. Ezra reached up to wipe it away without thinking, only for his hand to come back covered in blood. It took him a moment to realize he'd hit his head on the corner of the table when Odette shoved him.

Ezra looked at the blood on his hand and the wreckage around the room, then suddenly started to laugh, and the longer he laughed, the more the tears came.

He had nothing left to lose now, but he was going to make Odette and Rafe pay for what they'd done.

Ezra roughly wiped away his tears, picked up his phone, and dialed a number. "Hello, I'd like to report a crime. I want to press attempted murder charges against Rafe Ellington."

After he hung up, Ezra laid his mother to rest and went back to Port Seward. Then he took all the evidence he'd gathered and stormed into the hospital.

Odette was showing some senior officials around the hospital, and when she saw Ezra charging in, she went rigid.

A bouquet of daisies still wet with dew sat quietly in front of the cold headstone. The petals were fresh, so they had obviously been left there not long ago. Beside them sat a neatly wrapped slice of lemon cake, which had been Maureen's favorite treat.Odette's heart lurched, and a thought exploded in her numb, deadened mind with devastating joy and disbelieving terror. Ezra had been here. He wasn't dead! Ezra was alive! An indescribable rush of joy shot straight to her head, making her ears ring. The black sedan she'd glimpsed when she got out of her car flashed through her mind. Was it him?Odette spun around and practically stumbled down the steps toward her car. Her tires screeched against the pavement as the car shot forward like a bullet, speeding off in the direction where she remembered the other car disappearing.Odette stared straight ahead, her eyes straining to pierce the darkness for any possible trace of it. What if she couldn't catch up? What if she did, and it was

"The baby?" Odette's voice held the faintest trace of mockery."Do I need to remind you how this baby came about?"The color drained from Rafe's face. He opened his mouth as if to explain, but in the end, he didn't say anything. What was there to explain? If she was asking him that, she obviously knew he'd drugged her water that night.Odette looked away coldly. Without another word, she picked up the album and started to walk around him and out of the study."Don't go! Ezra's dead. From now on, the three of us can be a family and build a good life together, okay?"He lunged at her and wrapped his arms tightly around her waist from behind, his voice choked with tears. "Did you forget how good you used to be to me? Did you forget—""I didn't forget." Odette cut him off, her voice flat. "It was all an act. You and your mother handed me a way out, so I took it."Her words pierced straight through Rafe's last line of defense like a knife.Like a cornered animal, he shoved her shoul

Rafe watched Odette's face go rigid and kept talking. "You haven't looked at your checkup results yet, have you? You're pregnant with my baby. You're already a month along."You know my mom has always liked you. As long as you remarry me, she'll use every connection and resource she has to help you climb straight to the top of the medical world. But if you dare get rid of this baby, my family can just as easily make sure no medical center ever hires you."He had dangled the bait and shown his hand at the same time. Ezra was dead anyway. As long as he kept her by his side, she would forget Ezra eventually and fall in love with him again, and he was confident enough to believe it.Odette stood there without moving. The rage that had been ready to burn everything down seemed to turn to ice in an instant. After a few seconds of silence, the corners of Odette's mouth slowly curved upward. "Fine. Let's remarry."Dana's eyes went wide as she stared at Odette. Of course, she hadn't change

In the end, though, Dana didn't say anything. She turned and left the room.Over the next few days, Odette took her medication on time and went along with her treatment. She didn't bring up Ezra, the fire, or anything else, as if it had all been swept away with time. But on her late-night rounds, Dana would sometimes find Odette lying perfectly still, staring at the ceiling with her eyes wide open. The faint glow of the monitor reflected in them, and they seemed to have no bottom.Dana couldn't help sighing to herself. More than once, she almost told Odette the truth, but she felt she had even less right to make that decision for Ezra.Rafe came by every day, but the tenderness Odette used to have when she looked at him was gone, and all that was left was cold distance.A week later, Odette suddenly spoke to Dana, who had been at her side the whole time, looking worried. It was the first time since waking up that she had asked for anything. "Where's my phone?"Dana paused, then q

Odette heard a deafening ringing in her ears, and then she couldn't hear anything at all."That's impossible!"Her fingers tightened inch by inch around Dana's white coat, her knuckles going pale as if they might split, and fresh red bloomed through the bandage around her wrist."The rescue crews must have taken him to another hospital. Yes, that has to be it."Odette let go abruptly and staggered to her feet. "I need to find out where they took Ezra."But she had already used up all her strength, and the moment she stood, she collapsed onto the floor.Dana caught her on reflex and sighed. "Odette, the heat at the center of the fire was too intense, and the building could have collapsed at any moment. The rescue was incredibly difficult."According to the fire department's records and our hospital's admission logs, you really were the only one brought in that night."The words hit Odette like a thunderclap going off inside her head. She went rigid, and her hand slowly slipped

Ezra's eyes went wide. Thinking Odette was trying to escape, he lunged at her on instinct and tackled her hard to the floor.Odette coughed violently a few times and stopped resisting. In fact, that one struggle seemed to have used up her last burst of strength, and once he had her pinned, she went completely limp.Odette looked up at his face, and in the ever brighter, ever hotter glow of the fire, she slowly smiled. It held a gentleness that was close to relief, along with a bottomless sorrow. Her lips moved as the thick smoke filled her lungs, and her voice was so faint he could barely hear it, yet every word burned itself into his ears. "Maybe this is for the best. That way, I can find you in another life and make things right."Ezra froze. When he looked into Odette's eyes, there was no love and no hatred, only a quiet sense of peace.Behind him, an even fiercer wave of flames swept in with a thunderous roar.Just before he lost consciousness, he thought he saw the bedroom d
