Chapter 4

Author: King Sand Rat
The older technician in front nodded politely as he greeted me.

I had just opened my mouth when Martin cut me off. "There's no serious problem. My wife has been emotionally unstable since giving birth, and she has developed some misunderstandings about the android. You can go."

The younger technician said, "But according to company policy, we are required to inspect the android before we can close the report."

Ruby suddenly spoke up in an innocent voice. "Of course. I've been serving this household according to my programming. The madam simply seems to have misunderstood me."

She walked over to the technicians without the slightest sign of panic.

Five minutes later, the older technician checked the results and reported to me. "We're not detecting any abnormalities."

Ruby then said, "There never was anything wrong with me. The madam has postpartum depression and keeps taking it out on me."

Nothing had gone as I expected. The moment no one was watching, I grabbed Samson and ran.

When I reached the garage, I suddenly realized that Martin had put Ruby in charge of everything in the house. He had even given her my car keys.

Samson's breathing and heartbeat were growing weaker. I had no choice but to run into the street and try to flag down a car. The tearing between my legs worsened until blood ran down my legs and soaked my dress.

The drivers took one look at me and not one of them dared to stop.

As I struggled toward the hospital, a familiar car suddenly drove straight at me. I jumped out of the way, but the fall scraped me in several places, drawing blood. I also felt a piercing pain shoot through my leg.

Through the windshield, I saw Ruby's mocking sneer. She mouthed the words, "This is what you get for telling someone to inspect me."

She then drove away with a cold laugh.

Torrential rain poured over me and dripped from my hair onto Samson. I held him as tightly as I could and struggled all the way to the hospital.

When I arrived, I caught my reflection in the glass. I could hardly believe the filthy, drenched woman who looked like a fleeing beggar was me. "Doctor, please save my baby…"

The doctor looked at me and said, "You look like you need treatment even more than he does."

At my insistence, the doctor examined Samson first. Then he sighed and shook his head. "His fever hasn't broken. He has acute pneumonia, and being out in the cold made things worse. He's barely hanging on and his chances of survival are very low... Even if we save him, he may suffer severe cognitive impairment."

I grabbed the doctor in despair and pleaded, "Please, doctor. Save my baby first. No matter what happens, I won't give up on him!"

I was crouching outside the emergency room when Martin suddenly arrived with Ruby. He clicked his tongue when he saw how filthy I was. "Do you have any idea what would happen if the media saw you looking like this?"

All I could do was roar at him, heartbroken. "Martin! Our son is fighting for his life because you refused to believe me repeatedly and kept letting Ruby do whatever she wanted!"

Ruby covered her mouth. "But I took care of the baby according to my programming, and he was clearly improving at home. Maybe the madam made it worse by taking him out into the rain."

Furious, I raised my hand. "Then who tried to run me over to stop me from getting here?!"

Martin caught my wrist before I could touch her. "The technicians from Syntek Robotics already said there's nothing wrong with Ruby. Do you have any proof of what you're saying? She's an android, but that doesn't make her your punching bag."

A man in a suit suddenly appeared at the end of the corridor. The two technicians from earlier followed respectfully behind him.

He scoffed. "Who said there's nothing wrong with Ruby?"

The doctor told me, "Samson's doing alright now, but the fever lasted too long and may have affected his brain development. He'll need to stay in the hospital for observation. You can see him inside now but keep things quiet." I could not wait and ran into the room. I looked at my boy inside an incubator with tubes connected to his tiny body, my eyes filled with tears. Martin followed me inside and stared at Samson through the glass, then covered his face in anguish. "Get out," I said in a cold voice. "Celia, please give me a chance to make this up to you..." Martin said. But I simply raised my voice. "Get out! You don't deserve to be his father!" A nurse stepped in and asked Martin to leave. He looked at Samson one last time before walking out, crushed. - Three weeks later, Samson and I were finally discharged and we returned home. Martin did everything he could to prove he had changed. He dismissed all the nannies, learned how to care for a baby himself, and hired t

Ruby looked at Samson and me with disgust. The medical staff and the Syntek Robotics technicians froze, afraid to make a move. "You keep saying you love Martin, but you're threatening to kill his son?" I struggled to get the words out.Ruby threw her head back and laughed wildly. "That's because he doesn't care about the baby! He told me himself that if it isn't because he needs the baby to keep you and your family's fortune tied to him, he never would have wanted one! I'm the one he truly loves!" Martin struggled to his feet. "That's a lie. I never..." "Never?" Ruby sneered. "Then who pressed a pillow over the baby's head last night because he was crying too loudly? Who gave me permission to give him sleeping pills this morning? Who said Celia's body after giving birth was disgusting?" Then, Ruby looked at me smugly. "You heard it last night too, didn't you?" With every word, Martin's face grew paler and my heart broke a little more. Ruby was not the only reason I had suf

James pulled up another set of data as Ruby played victim. "There's also something wrong with Ruby's empathy matrix. "She has developed emotions beyond those we originally programmed into her and has become emotionally dependent on you, Mr. Summerland. In short, she has developed intense jealousy and hostility toward Celia and your son Samson." Ruby suddenly screamed. "It's not an error! I love Martin! I deserve him more than that woman does! She can't even manage the most basic task of caring for a baby! All she does is cry! Why should she get Martin all to herself?!" The terrifying sight of an android declaring her love for a human drew stunned stares from the medical staff and patients around us. Martin backed away in disbelief. "You're... You're just an android..." "So what if I'm an android?" Ruby's facial expression almost warped. "I can give you everything she can't! Flawless housekeeping, looks that will never fade, a body that will never change shape, and no postpart

The man's booming voice made Martin and Ruby freeze, and the two technicians behind him wore serious expressions. One of them nodded toward me. "This is James Smith." Martin frowned. "I thought this was already settled. Why are you all back?" James handed Martin a business card. "I'm Syntek's technical director. After receiving the report, we investigated further. The situation is far more complicated than it first appeared." Panic flickered across Ruby's eyes, but she quickly regained her composure and moved closer to Martin. She gently said, "Sir, there must be some misunderstanding. I've been following my programming the entire time." James smiled coldly and pulled out a tablet. "Ruby is one of the latest nanny robots we've developed. According to our remote monitoring, she has already violated three directives programmed into her over the past twenty-four hours!" "What directives?" Martin asked urgently. James said, "First, do not harm humans. Second, obey your owner

Martin looked at me in guilt. "I only agreed because Ruby said it wouldn't hurt him... Ruby, take him to the hospital and have him examined." Ruby didn't move. "Sir, I've analyzed the baby's symptoms. It's only a mild fever, and we can bring it down with physical cooling measures. Hospitals have a complicated environment and a newborn's immune system is weak. He could easily catch an infection there." Martin gave it a thought and nodded. "Ruby's right. She knows more about this than we do. Let her handle it." Ruby forcibly snatched Samson from my arms and locked me inside the nursery. I screamed until my voice went hoarse, but neither of them cared. Martin merely rubbed his forehead wearily and told me to behave. After that, they refused to let me see Samson. Ruby said he needed a quiet room while she lowered his temperature. Meanwhile, Martin told me to stop making things worse. Remembering how sick Samson had looked, I nearly dropped to my knees. "Martin, please! Let me o
