Chapter 2

I stared at Spencer, who was acting like he had nothing to hide. Everything he said sounded perfectly reasonable, which made it seem like I was being small-minded and standing in the way of my girlfriend's career.

His smile never wavered. Looking straight at me, he went on, "Andie's gone home to pack. We'll be leaving soon."

Everyone fell silent when they heard that. My heart ached with bitterness.

Was Andrea turning me down because of the man standing right in front of me? I knew this proposal wasn't going to happen now.

I looked at everyone around me and said, "You guys should head home. Thanks for sticking around for me all this time. Sorry for all the trouble. Dinner's on me some other day."

Everyone said it was fine, but naturally, a few people couldn't help grumbling as they left.

Tony was the only one who looked genuinely worried. When he got closer to me, he leaned in to whisper in my ear, "Vince, you'd better keep tabs on your girlfriend. That guy is obviously trying to make a statement."

I merely smiled instead of replying. Then I met his gaze, saying, "Apologize to Anya for me when you get back for making her wait with me. She even had to get an earful from Andrea on top of that."

Tony patted me on the shoulder and left. A moment later, I heard footsteps. Andrea came over to Spencer with a bag slung over her shoulder, excitedly saying, "Let's go!"

All she had eyes for was Spencer. And when she glanced back at me, all I saw was indifference.

After the taxi disappeared into the distance, I felt completely lost. That was because I'd just been diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Any day now, I could start losing my memories. Little by little, I'd forget everything.

When that day came, I wasn't sure if I'd still remember Andrea at all. The only treatment available was expensive medication that could slow the progression of the disease.

Andrea used to ask me all the time when I would propose to her and when she could finally marry me.

When I found out I had the disease, I knew I was no longer in any position to marry Andrea. After all, chances were, I couldn't give her a normal life.

I just wanted to make her wish come true and propose to her before I lost all my memories. But now, it seemed she didn't need it anymore.

By the time I pulled myself together and made it home, I was shocked to find Andrea had taken my bank card.

She knew the PIN, and that account held the money I desperately needed for treatment.

I called Andrea right away, but her phone was off.

Alarm bells went off in my head, and I immediately tried to freeze my card on my phone. But before I could, a notification came in saying someone had withdrawn all my money.

I kicked myself for not acting faster. If only I'd been quicker, I might've been able to buy myself a few more years to look after my grandma back in the countryside.

Grandma was the only person who'd stayed by my side throughout my entire life. She used to walk miles on foot just to buy the things I loved to eat.

When I was little, and we couldn't afford my tuition, she'd sling a basket on her back and go around borrowing potatoes. She'd then sell those potatoes so that I could afford to go to school. But what was I supposed to do now?

I was completely broke, with nowhere left to turn. And my memory was already starting to fail me.

I started forgetting work instructions almost immediately after receiving them. Even when a coworker asked me to buy them lunch, I'd walk out the door and suddenly forget what I was supposed to do.

I'd buy groceries, bring them home, leave them in the kitchen, then forget I'd bought them and head back out to buy them all over again.

That meant that I'd thrown my whole world away. The decision to break up with Spencer came after I caught him with another woman. • My Last Days, and I Don't Remember Her   Chapter 9

And I, too, had finally moved on from the past. After Andrea left, I found out that Jason had been shouldering the burden of supporting the two of us all these years. He was the one who'd been searching for doctors for me all along. In his heart, someone as young as me simply shouldn't have had to suffer from such a disease so soon. He'd always been hoping I'd visit his place again for a drink, and that we'd get the chance to watch a race together someday.Although we'd given up racing a long time ago, there was no harm in watching a race and fulfilling a wish we'd never gotten around to. It gave the two of us something to enjoy together as well. That day, we took a case of beer up into the mountains and stayed there from midnight until dawn. We watched the entire race from the hillside, then sat together and watched the sun come up.Watching the sunrise became our way of saying goodbye to the past. As long as life went on, so would fate. With that in mind, I went on to live out

  • My Last Days, and I Don't Remember Her   Chapter 8

Jason was a businessman through and through, so he figured out what Andrea was getting at almost instantly.Without a second thought, he pulled out a card and tossed it at Andrea. "Take this. Use it."Tears suddenly welled up in Andrea's eyes. She wanted to thank him a thousand times over, but she didn't even know where to begin.Jason said helplessly, "I know you want to help Vincent, but you have to know your limits. And there's something you need to understand. This disease is simply next to incurable. Still, Vincent once saved my life, so whatever you need, as long as it's within my means, don't hesitate to ask."With a definite answer at last, Andrea couldn't hide how thankful she felt. But once she was gone, Jason sighed helplessly. He knew Andrea was basically throwing herself into a hopeless situation. But deep down, he hoped that one day, I'd really come to my senses again.Andrea began going from hospital to hospital, actively asking doctors about cases like mine and sea

Even after getting caught, Spencer still looked utterly arrogant. He shot Andrea a cold look, a mocking laugh escaping his lips. "Andrea, you really think way too highly of yourself. Since when have I ever needed to rely on anyone else?"Sounds to me like you're delusional, just like that fool in the wheelchair."I watched as Andrea's expression slowly turned cold. Never in a million years had she imagined Spencer was this kind of person. She'd simply been blind when she was younger, spending so long thinking Spencer was better than me.After Andrea kicked Spencer out, she abruptly sank to the floor and burst into tears. Maybe this life really had worn her down. Otherwise, she wouldn't have completely broken down like that over Spencer's cruel words.Maybe Andrea had had it the hardest in our relationship. After all, she'd always been torn between two men. She'd missed out on the version of me who was still in his right mind and fallen for the reckless, wild Spencer instead. So

That day, I was sitting in the care facility courtyard, soaking up the sun, when a woman with a sorrowful look suddenly barged in.She hurried over and stared intently at my face before exclaiming, "Vincent!"I had no idea who Vincent was, so I lowered my head and ignored her. Everyone there called me Vince. And I didn't know who she was talking to.When she came up to me and tried to touch me, I yelled, "Who are you? Why are you touching me?"Startled by my reaction, she backed off and stood a few feet away, fumbling for words but too afraid to come any closer. The doctors and nurses noticed the commotion, but they were already used to seeing things like this. They didn't recognize the woman, so one of them approached her to ask."Hello, miss. Could you tell me what your relationship with Mr. Shafer is?"Andrea managed a smile. "I'm his…"The words were on the tip of her tongue, but she couldn't get them out. And really, who was she to me now?Andrea thought it over for a lon

Andrea added, "The doctor said you have severe hypoglycemia. If I hadn't gotten you to the hospital in time, you could've died."I stayed silent as I more or less knew why. My memory had been getting worse these past few days. I kept forgetting whether I'd eaten or not, so I'd eat when I was hungry and skip meals when I wasn't. And lately, I'd been feeling so down that I just didn't feel like eating. As my memory continued to deteriorate, I was finding it harder and harder to remember things. Sometimes it felt like I couldn't even get a complete sentence out anymore.A sudden, unsettling thought crossed my mind. I might already be in the late stages of the disease. As it progressed, I'd lose more and more of my memories, forget everyone I knew, and eventually lose my ability to speak. At that point, there'd be no point in continuing treatment. As such, I turned back to Andrea and said, "Fine. We're even."By the time I was done talking, I didn't feel a thing anymore. Andrea, on th
